Next step, not part of the program

  • invitation of Esperanto community and in particular competition participants to participate on the project Esperanto125 (thematic translation run from Esperanto Wikipedia to multiple Wikipedias) when the project will be lunched

Impact edit

Target readership edit

The project from middle-term to long-term perspective wants to promote using Content Translation in general, so for various languages and various Wikimedia projects. However, from short-term perspective it focuses on contributors on Esperanto Wikipedia and as side effect it should provide new content on Esperanto Wikipedia. One of activities planned is invitation the participant to translate articles from Esperanto Wikipedia to Wikipedias in another languages.

Fit with strategy edit

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

Increasing quality
Content Translation is designed to make translating articles easier and faster as translator don't need to spend time on purely technical things like links and category matching, image adaptation etc. That leaves more time to work on content to be naturally readable and checking sources. Also, Content Translation can provide language-specific tools (like machine pre-translation; in future: dictionaries, translation memory, grammar checker etc.) to make contributing even faster. Experiments showed that post-editing of machine pre-translated text is faster than translating from scratch. Also, Content Translation provides suggestions of articles worth of translating (featured, highly viewed).
For the project will be improved and created help pages and another needed instruction materials about how to use Content Translation in good way. Part of these materials can be easily translated into another languages.
Considering all this, well used Content Translation will result in publishing of more content of high-quality. As the program is customized for at least bilingual contributors and there are already planed next steps, increasing quality should propagate into Wikimedia projects in another languages.
Increasing participation
Content Translaiton provides easy entry point to Wikimedia projects. Part of this grant project is dedicated to bring new contributors to Wikimedia projects by promoting article translating contest outside of Wikimedia movement. We are happy to measure efficiency of such promotion to non-wikimedians but we consider, that most of the competition participants will be actual wikimedians (active or sleeping). Also, we would appreciate your suggestions about how to make promotion (in conditions of world-wide diaspora organisation) efficient (please, use talk page; please see #Non-financial_requirements for more ways how to help the program).

Measures of success edit

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

Short-term success:

  • at least 25 participants in the competition
  • at least 800 KB of added text content
  • at least 60 published translations
  • at least 1 translated article get higher status (good or featured)
  • questionnaire for competition participants:
    • at least 50% participants responded
    • at least 70% liked the competition
    • at least 30% get know about Content Translation or finally decided to use it
    • at least 60% consider that the competition motivated them for using Content Translation

Middle-term success (3 months after end of the competition):

  • at least 40% of competition participants still use Content Translation
    • and these publish at least 20% more translations (calculated in bytes) by Content Translation in all Wikimedia projects (calculating 3 months before start of the competition and 3 months after end of the competition)
  • delete ratio of translations of Content Translation is under 5%

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks edit

Resources edit

  • There was organised article writing contest on Esperanto Wikipedia in April 2010. There was not used WMF funds but the contest was very successful with 28 participant, 57 improved articles and aggregated change 675 KB. Growth of 1,000 vital articles was biggest of all Wikipedias in that month. The main organiser of the previous contest provides help and consultation to the organising team of the next contest.
  • Organising team already have experiences with organising of photo competition Wiki Loves Monuments Slovakia (2012-2015) and article writing contests Day of financial literacy (Slovak) (2013-2014) and Wikimedia CEE Spring Slovakia (main organiser) and Wiki Loves Monument Colombia 2013 (organiser).
  • We have preliminary agreement about prizes donation from one partner and are are in contact with others.

Risks edit

Risk Minimizing risks
Grant request is asked on last minute; it will be approved / denied only several days before begin of the competition. Competition is only one of the program's parts, another ones (preparing help pages, invitations for general use, invitation to translation runs...) will be done regardless of competition. Also, we have preliminary agreement with one contest partner about prizes and hopefully more partners will colabourate. Also, WMF grant team accepted to provide several WMF merchandise to winners in case of denying the grant.
Potential contest winners can live in countries that are hard or expensive to send prize to. Election of prizes will be done on individual basis and with consultation with winner. It is possible to donate prize in electronic form. We have contacts with many local organisations, which could help with providing prizes in cheaper manner.

Budget edit

Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.

Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.

Non-financial requirements edit

See a description of non-financial assistance available. Please inform the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) of any requests for non-financial assistance now.

Requests for non-financial assistance, if any

: Enabling translation suggestions on Esperanto Wikipedia before November would be great, or at least during November (already done, thanks Language Engineering Team!)

We would like to receive community recommendations (please use talk page) about:
  1. how to recruit new contributors in effective way (as we work in world-wide diaspora, physical meetings like edit-a-thons wouldn't be effective for such competition), we already use social media, partners' communication channels;
  2. how to make rules in concordance with possibility of machine translation (usually, when competition is intended to write new articles from original sources, I have (in Wikimedia SK) accepted translation but with some penalty; but as this competition is intended to promote using a translation tool with very good possibility of machine translation, it is hard to set good rules).

Discussion edit

Community notification edit
