Activities and lessons learned edit

Activities edit

Initial phase edit

Pre-grant activities took place in the period from mid 2014 to the beginning of 2015 and they included:

  • 2 meetings with Matica Srpska staff, including President and leading lexicographer
  • Recruitment of python programmer User:Milos trifunovic who had knowledge and passion for linguistics
  • Organizing campaign for translating Names of Wikimedia languages:
The original idea was to translate lexicography terms, but it evolved into idea to translate all Wikipedia languages into all Wikipedia languages. For that purpose we have developed a matrix to facilitate that process https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Wikimedia_languages. We have started the first campaign with this quite elaborated task https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Wikimedia_languages/message-en. The announcement was posted on Wiktionary community portals, or Wikipedia community portals for languages that don't have Wikitionary project.
Using statistics https://stats.wikimedia.org/wiktionary/EN/Sitemap.htm we have also created the lists of active users and invited them to participate in the process. The most active users according to the above mentioned statistics were personally invited to participate in this process, however this methodology had some flaws, as statistics data were not so accurate, and we had to adjust the lists on the way.

Cooperation with Matica srpska edit

There were two parallel process in cooperation with Matica srpska, one related to the work on dictionaries and the other related to legal aspects of freeing the content and introduction of Creative Commons licenses into the system of the oldest cultural institution.

During that process Interglider.org team had 7 meetings with Matica srpska staff: in December 2014, April 2015, 2 meetings in May 2015, June 2015, September and October 2015.

The process related to the cooperation with Matica srpska lexicography experts was really fruitful with the aim to resolve various issues related to successful input of material of Dictionary of Serbian speeches in Vojvodina and Ornithological dictionary on Wiktionary. Various issues were tackled: accents, fonts, proper descriptions of lexicographic categories, as well as a number of other lexicographic and linguistic issues. The main consultant was Dejan Miloradov, lexicographer and one of the authors of two dictionaries, who was personally very interested to see the outcome of the project.

The other important aspect of cooperation with Matica srpska was clarifying the issue of the concept of Creative Commons licenses together with legal team of this institution. Having in mind specific position of Matica srpska in our culture, and the fact that Creative Commons is a relatively new concept, the process of resolving legal aspect of our cooperation lasted longer than planned, but we believe that such development was beneficial. During that time, legal team of Matica srpska performed in depth analysis of the license, and as a result of the process the Agreement between Matica srpska and Interglider.org was signed in October 2015. That has caused slight delay in our project, but we believe it is important that the major issues regarding free licenses (and specifically CC) are clarified in our communication and the doors are open for future dialogue and cooperation.

Prior to agreement signing, the programmer was working on sample material, but the actual work on parsing started at the end of October 2015, upon reception of material of Dictionary of Serbian Speeches in Vojvodina.

The material of Ornithological dictionary was available for parsing from February 2016, from the moment the authors have finished it. This is the new dictionary and it was still in the process of creation.

Software Development edit

Dicteator is a software for parsing dictionaries and converting their entries to Wiktionary formats developed as part of this project. It is currently work in progress with limited capability which will gradually be increased.

The process of software development is explained in detail on the following link: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Dicteator.

Established partnerships edit

One of the indicators of success of our project is the number of new partnerships initiated thanks to the cooperation with Matica Srpska.

The Dictionary of Synonyms edit

During this period we have had successful cooperation with publishing house KORNET and its author Pavle Ćosić regarding the edition the Dictionary of Synonyms. More than 27000 pages were created thanks to this cooperation. The Dictionary was also uploaded to Serbo-Croat Wiktionary.

The agreement could be found on OTRS https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom;TicketID=8603228

Philology Faculty edit

Cooperation with University of Belgrade Faculty of Philology

  • Sociolinguistics 2009/10 students wrote sociolinguistics articles as term papers within the Wiktionary Meets Matica Srpska project.
  • As a result of maintaining cooperation with prof. Jelena Filipovic and the department of Iberian Studies, we have gained a person who will lead the linguistic work on the project
  • Sociolinguistics 2015/16: students worked on finding and stratification of relevant data. Every generation of students will do this as a result of the cooperation with the Faculty of Philology.
  • Established cooperation with MA students with previous experience in building relevant databases.
  • Intersection of territories, population, economic and linguistic data from relevant sources.
  • Codification of territories
  • Codification of languages
  • Database of language names written in various languages (to be done)
  • Output in JSON format
  • Provisional database of languages spoken per country, indexed per country, with population, economic and internet coverage data in JSON format. (Two forms: one based on ISO 3166 codes, which don't cover all territories; one based on newly created UTLF codes.)
  • Provisional database of languages spoken per country, indexed per language, with population, economic and internet coverage data in JSON format. (Two forms: one based on ISO 639 3 codes, which don't cover all languages; one based on newly created ULF codes.)
  • Provisional database of languages spoken per territory covered by Wikimedia affiliate organizations and user groups, indexed per territory, with population, economic and internet coverage data in JSON format.
  • Provisional database of approximate geographic positions of languages to be used by Wikimedia affiliate organizations in their reach to the language communities without Wikimedia projects.
  • Provisional database intersecting Wikimedia statistics with data gathered by this project.
  • The team has been created.

Outcomes and impact edit

Outcomes edit

Provide the original project goal here.

The overall strategic goal of the project is to improve the quality of Wikimedia projects, and to lesser extent to improve participation, while the specific project goals are the following:

  • Increase support for Open Knowledge / Free Content movement through establishing long term strategic partnership with venerable cultural institution Matica Srpska
  • Increase the quality, accuracy and volume of Serbian Wiktionary by 180% through digitization of the Dictionary of Serbian speeches of Vojvodina
  • Increase the quality of Wiktionaries through the digitization of the Serbian ornithological dictionary, and its use to establish and test a potential model for future development of cooperation across Wiktionaries
  • Reinvigorating communities around Wiktionaries through two targeted mobilization campaigns
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

At the moment this project has undoubted impact on the national level. It is the first time that institution such is Matica srpska had the opportunity to consider open licenses, to be introduced to them and to use that concept in cooperation with Interglider.org. Undoubtedly, as a result of such cooperation, the quality of Serbian and Serbo-Croat Wiktionary is increased and important partnesrships created.

However on the global level, we are yet to see the impact of this project, as due to material of Ornithological dictionary being late, we could not test all activities we planned for campaigning, so we will test them in the future period.

Progress towards targets and goals edit

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation

Global Metrics edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved
2. # of new editors
3. # of individuals involved
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages
