Summary edit

This is an example of a grant proposal that seeks to raise awareness about the 2030 Movement Strategy in a specific community, and to encourage community members to apply for their own Movement Strategy Implementation Grants.

Its focus is on activities like: translating relevant Meta pages into your language, distributing that information to your community, and training or supporting community members to apply for grants to carry out implementation.

Resources edit

This grant example also contains a number of useful resources and documents that may help you achieve the desired goals.

  1. Slides: Introduction to Movement Strategy generally
  2. Slides: A brief introduction to Movement Strategy and Movement Strategy grants
  3. Guide: How to transform ideas into projects
  4. Document: List of priority pages for translation

Project Goal edit

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative?

  • Funding for underrepresented communities: Our community would like to use funding opportunities to improve our work, but we are unsure how. We are overly-dependent on volunteer efforts, which is causing burn out and exploitation of their limited time. Those volunteers, however, lack the capacity, awareness, and enthusiasm to make use of the available funding opportunities by the Wikimedia Foundation. They are not able to fill the long grant applications in English, and they won’t be able to do it themselves without the proper support.

Project Background edit

When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?

This project will kick-off April 4 and I aim to finalize it by May 6

Where will your project activities be happening?

All activities will be happening online and within [my language] community..

Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.

  1. I will be leading on this project, and collaborating with others to deliver on some aspects of the project, with the following roles:
  2. Coordinator (myself): I’ll be responsible for the major activities of the project, including receiving the grants funds, writing the grants report, and coordinating between the other collaborators.
  3. Translator: A community member will be supported to translate Movement Strategy pages to our languages.
  4. Outreach & awareness: Another community member will distribute the translated documents to introduce our community to Movement Strategy and to the implementation grants.
  5. Trainer: Another affiliate member, with financial and project experience, will be supporting community volunteers in applying for their own Movement Strategy implementation grants.

What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?

  • No awareness of Movement Strategy. There are many within the region who have not joined in discussions previously. This means that many are not aware of the opportunities that MS brings. For example, the discussions regarding hubs, skills development, and increasing awareness of the movement are all important for many within the region. Yet they have not actively engaged in these discussions.
  • No awareness of what Movement Strategy Grants are about. Movement Strategy grants are not very visible within the community. Many do not know about MSIG. They might have read the call to apply for grants, but do not understand what it is about.
  • Language barriers prevent people from engaging in MS and MSIG. Communications with the community happen mostly in English. This increases the awareness problem and reduces the ability of people within the community to take advantage of the opportunities that MSIG provides.

Project Activities edit

What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.

  • Survey. We will use social media surveys or individual outreach to talk with our community members. The goal is to understand their current level of knowledge of Movement Strategy and its grants, and how we can support them to engage more.
  • Translations. We will translate specific Movement Strategy documents and materials to engage the community. This material (including Meta pages) will be related to hubs, skills and leadership development, and funding for underrepresented communities (note that these are suggested pages, please feel free to recommend other pages you think will be useful for your community).
  • Hubs:
  • Skill Development:
  • Increasing access for underrepresented communities:
  • Community engagement. These will be up to five online facilitated conversations where we share, with community members, the progress of Movement Strategy to-date. Those conversations will inform people about the Recommendations and Initiatives. Each session will last for 1 hour.
  • Learning sessions. We will engage community members based on the specific support needs identified through the initial engagement (survey). For example: specific support may be needed in coming up with grant ideas, which is one of the resources listed above that we can adapt.
  • Grants applications training. For those who are ready to transform their ideas into full projects and proposals, there will be training (for example Let’s Connect) to help them in applying for funding from the implementation grants.

How do you intend to keep communities updated on the progress and outcomes of the project? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals responsible for updating the community

  1. The Movement Strategy Forum will be used to ensure that community members are able to read all messages in the local language.
  2. Village pump will be used to inform the community about the upcoming engagements and how and where to key in.
  3. Timely direct and personalized messages to individuals to attend.
  4. Detailed meeting notes will be posted on Meta.
  5. Grants applications developed will be shared with community members to review. They will also be shared with other regions for endorsement. They will be shared in the grants community of practice group on telegram and the Movement Strategy Forum as well.
