Grants:IdeaLab/improving the UI

Improving the Wikipedia UI
In Hebrow and in English, the Wikipedia UI looks outdated like opening a real encyclopedia that is 50 years old. I suggest to make changes to the interface to make it look modern. A few ideas would be changing some fonts and colors. The goal is to make the page look modern and more appealing especially to the young readers who use Wikipedia as reference for their homeworks, group projects and research papers. (Hello, Thed3ri. I was browsing and found your page, I edited it to fix typos and add content. I hope you don’t mind.)

Project idea edit

What Wikimedia project(s) and specific areas will you be evaluating? edit

Is this project measuring a specific space on a project (e.g. deletion discussions), or the project as a whole?
UI of Wikipedia as a whole

Describe your idea. How might it be implemented? edit

Provide details about the method or process of how you will evaluate your community or collect data. Does your idea involve private or personally identifying information? Take a look at the Privacy Policy for Wikimedia’s guidelines in this area.
Changing the font style, font colors, and other stuff which will make the UI look more modern and thus appealing to readers especially the tech-savvy ones.

Are there experienced Wikimedians who can help implement this project? edit

If applicable, please list groups or usernames of individuals who you can work with on this project, and what kind of work they will do.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed? edit

For a lot of peaple, it’s comfortable for the eyes to read text in a nice new font which will make them stay on the website longer.

How would your measurement idea help your community make better decisions? edit

After you are finished measuring or evaluating your Wikimedia project, how do you expect that information to be used to benefit the project?

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need? edit

Do you need people with specific skills to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? If you can’t implement this project, can you scale down your project so it is doable?

Everything new that i want to learn or read about i open immidiatly wikipedia and reading and editing wrong text if there is some. And even translate to Hebrow and creating centent.

Endorsements edit

  • I sort of endorse the general idea (in spite of its fuzziness), but the first question is why? For example, what do you want to do with the additional dimension of color? Distract people and try to avoid boredom? Or provide some kind of information about the content? Actually, in the context of the EPR idea, I actually suggested using solid black for well established parts of the article, and shading into other colors to indicate certain kinds of problem. For examples, orange might indicate sections where there have been NPV problems and red might indicate sections where there are ongoing struggles about the appropriate facts to include in the article.
