Grants:IdeaLab/Wiki Reader

Wiki Reader
We can distribute cheap tablets similar to kindle readers with a wiki based UI that'll give access to all wiki projects (wikipedia, wikitionary, wiki answers etc.) to school going students, mostly the ones who access free government education. Most of the articles must be stored on the tablet offline (like kiwix project) and the database will auto update when connected to a wifi. The tablets can be locally produced under "Make in India" and "Digital India" initiatives of our country.

Audience

edit

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

edit

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
Students who under the constraints of poverty are unable to receive quality education.

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

edit

English, Hindi and the 22 regional languages of India.

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

edit

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Classroom lectures, whatsapp, SMS, voice call.

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

edit

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
They are the future of India and will form the backbone for an ever-expanding economy.

edit

Firstly we can explain the benefit about the immense amount of knowledge they can receive from these tablets. Live demonstrations on how to use the tablet and how it can help us in our studies and to learn about new things.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

edit

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
Trending topics on social media, measuring the traffic from these devices (to check if they are updating the info) etc.

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

edit

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
The project will need financial assistance and a team to implement it. The support can come from government in partnership with big tech giants like Google or Infosys who are trying to improve internet access in remote and poorer sections of earth.

Web designing has always been my hobby and I have been fascinated the way kiwix has helped people access wikipedia in the most remote areas of earth. I believe wikipedia is the greatest repertoire of knowledge on this planet and every individual has the right to free education and wikipedia is one way of providing free knowledge to the masses.
