Grants:IdeaLab/The Student Solution

The Student Solution
Curious students tend to use Wikipedia the most, in my experience; and as such, a targeted approach to the ocean of middle and high schoolers in developing parts of the world with Internet would greatly benefit everyone.

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

edit

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
Middle and high school students who have internet connections in developing regions Bakweri people. I have noticed and realised their backwardness when it comes to internet usage. My great people internet precisely WIKIMEDIA Keeps us informed in practically all aspects that the reason why with pleasure I introduce to you WIKIMEDIA for proper usage. We all know we are in a volcanic area and need internet for survival WIKIMEDIA is or should be our first choice .

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

edit

English, Hindi, (Other regional languages) no need to any regional languages because wikipedia is very useful website. A website is country wide fame. website must be in student or user favour. students needs to understand quickly.

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

edit

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Schools, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

edit

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
Focusing on India (but applicable to many places), rural and underdeveloped parts of the country are quickly becoming more and more literate and connected with the rest of the world, as Internet connectivity and smartphone usage is becoming commonplace. Thus with a such a light (text-based) website as Wikipedia, students of these places will be able to quench their intellectual thirst quickly, easily and most importantly, cheaply. Since India is also such a diverse country with hundreds of languages, Wikipedia has the opportunity of expanding into a larger, non-English user base, if only they are made aware. Students can use knowledge to further their education, and if not, to be better at their vocational occupation.

Project idea

edit

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?

edit

English, Hindi, (others if possible)

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?

edit

Online and through public advertising such as radio and newspapers. In-person demonstrations can be done by locals in the area as the area covered may be vast.

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?

edit

Think about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
For a young mind such a student, especially one that cherishes education, knowledge has a charm like no other. Wikipedia will grow only if a seed is planted in the community. This can be done mainly via teachers in schools, teaching students and parents. Newspapers and radio are still cherished in these parts of India, and so advertising there could have far reaching effects, especially when roping in the adult population, the habits of which flow down to the younger generation.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

edit

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
Increased page views and a higher population knowing about the Website. This could have the possible effect of correlating to an increase of smart-devices in an area. A correlation would possibly imply a positive perception towards Wikipedia (ie easier customer acquisition via word of mouth).

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

edit

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
People with good people skills are definitely needed to implore hesitant populations. Some money will have to be spent on advertising and data sourcing but it should be more or less an effective word of mouth strategy.

About the idea creator

edit

I am a final year high school student studying science in Mumbai, India, who has used Wikipedia in more or less all school projects as a starting point in looking for information, and especially looking for deeper info via the citations.
