Grants:IdeaLab/Intellectual Honesty Campaign
Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editThe recent global conflicts related to terrorism, the European Union, and the U.S. election of 2016 have shown how both television and on-line media bias has influenced public opinion (i.e., intellectual dishonesty). Despite a rare minority attempting to advocate for intellectual honesty in how we describe and prove the veracity of arguments about these big issues, the majority of individuals that contribute to online articles or other news media are biased and either (1) not interested in countering their biases OR (2) unaware of how biased they might be. This results in misinformation as well as increased interpersonal as well as intercultural conflict. I propose that one of the best methods for helping decrease our conflicts is promoting more intellectually honest discussions based upon valid sources and well-reasoned arguments, which I hope to help Wikipedia become an even more prominent source of credible information.
What is your solution?
editI propose three solutions to this intellectual dishonesty problem. First, I would advocate for a series of live events sponsored by Wikipedia wherein scholars, academic institutions, and other reputable authors to discuss highly debated or inflammatory articles from Wikipedia. Second, Wikipedia can engage in collaborative research projects on the intellectual honesty of articles on Wikipedia related to current topics of note. Finally, Wikipedia could collaborate with institutes like the Smithsonian or foundations like the MacArthur Foundation, MENSA, the W.H.O. or other reputable education focused non-profit entities to co-host events, expositions, or campaigns for raising awareness about important social or scientific phenomenon.
