Project idea edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit

Allow museums, cultural centers, teachers, learners to leverage on factual knowledge to engage in mutual recognition of cultural and scientific diversities.

What is your solution? edit

Visualise the network of human knowledge for each language of Wikipedia. Each language carries specific cultural traits that can be visualised: as example, the Italian Renaissance will show a knowledge map more dense in the Italian knowledge graph.

The platform can be used to create, edit and share knowledge maps for any concepts for educational and reference purpose. Each map is a like a backbone, on which a museum, institution or individual can add own content and bring interaction to own archives. Finally, the network of human knowledge can be gamified for art-work installations, where players challenge each-other on who is the first to find out a path connecting own cultural background to the one of the opponent. As example, who is the first to discover a path from "Christianity" to "Islam", or a path from "Artificial Intelligence" to "Life", or "American Indian Wars" to "History of America". The goal is an experiential learning to reach out the other and build bridges of comprehension and deeper understanding.

Prototypes are already online! http://nifty.works shows the mindmap of English Wikipedia. nifty.works/play/ shows a prototype of gamification.

The final goal is to show the knowledge of all world cultures, starting from the first 12 languages with 1M+ topics (based on tests on quality of links shows performed on 3 wikipedias). Gamification is meant to be played on interactive walls in museums or squares in cities.

Who will you be doing outreach with? edit

Biennale Venezia [prospected]

Goals edit

1. Create, Edit and Share knowledge maps on factual knowledge to easily tell the story of the connections between sciences, history, maths, music. 2. Inspire learning and discussion by visualising connections between multiple queried topics 3. Engage in mutual-recognition of cultural diversities' with gamification of human knowledge as art-installation in interactive walls and public squares.'

About the idea creator edit

Hello! My name is Luigi, I worked before in Visual Communication and UX research; then in International Development Sector, to improve livelihood in rural African, Caribbean and Pacific rural regions through ICT innovation. In 2011 I took a sabbatical year to study network science, in 2012 I deepened data-scientist skills in a research institute and co-founded a company to map industrial domains. In 2016 I self-learned full-stack development to bring nifty.works to life, and carried tests on other languages. My mission in this project is to engage in learning and discovery, to bring insights in multi-disciplinary research and communication of cultures by means of visualising the network of knowledge amassed by us, humanity.

Endorsements edit

A mobile version has been launched to validate UX to overview and to summarise brainstorming of the English Wikipedia - http://learndiscovery.com/ Based on results and inspired by feedback, especially from south-east Asian teachers (Malaysia) and feedback from international students at Netherlands University I visited, I decided to open up the project on the web and scale it to all wikipedia, with proposal to endorse museums and other entities to leverage on visual mind-maps. - http://nifty.works/about/4xJWNMLgg2aL16y9/dna#topic-article
