Grants:IdeaLab/Allow limited travel information on wikipedia
Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWhat problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Usually on wikipedia you will find many articles about touristic attractions (e.g. museums, memorial houses...) However wikipedia explicitly disallows travel information.
For example there is a very good comprehensive article on wikipedia aobut the San Francisco City Hall. It wouldn't make sense to create a new article about the San Francisco City Hall on wikivoyage repeating all the information that is on wikipedia (which is very interesting for tourists) just to add two lines on wikivoyage, that would not be allowed on wikipedia, about the fact that the building while being a city hall can be visited.
Moreover wikivoyage did not pick-up and there is already an overlap of information between wikipedia and wikivoyage for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_neighborhoods
and https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/San_Francisco
There is an overlap on many parts of the wikivoyage article, the ones in the first part of the article.
Moreover, wikipedia has categories such as: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tourist_attractions_in_San_Francisco
What is your solution?
editFor the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Wikivoyage and wikipedia should be complementary, however if there is limited information, e.g. a few sentences, about an touristic objective then this should be allowed on wikipedia.
We should not allow all the information on how to get to that touristic objective, but a few sentences e..g that the buildings could be visited by tourists only in spring, or that there are free guided tours...
Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Allow articles to be complete, by adding limited travel information. It is very complicated to read one article on wikipedia and then only a complement of information on wikivoyage... many touristic objectives are not on wikivoyage but are on wikipedia.
