What is the problem you're trying to solve?

edit

Ethiopia is the second largest country in Africa with 100 million people and one of the very few countries in the world with its own alphabets. In the year 2016 facebook and google launched Amharic translation while it was Wikipedia was the first to make Amharic Ethiopia’s alphabet available long ago.

In a presentation done at Wiki Indaba in 2014 Amharic which has 13,000 articles ranked as the fifth language written in Africa languages. This shows the need to create more content which can significantly help Ethiopians to share their knowledge as well as understand the knowledge shared by other languages through translation.

What is your solution?

edit

The solution towards low content is to create more content and inorder to achive that goal we will ictivate and train established GLAM institutions, Artists and Media organizations in Ethiopia. This could be done by starting initially with Ethiopia National Archive Museum.

Project goals

edit

The initial stage of the project is to work with Ethiopia National Archive, Insight Media, Artists and tech hubs. The goal is to create 50 Wikipedia articles in Amharic and get 1000 media contribution with activation of the National Museum Archive. This will be done by activating staffs at Ethiopia National Archive which will make sure for the continuation of content creation by building Wiki community within the GLAM organization.

Who will you be doing outreach with?

edit

Ethiopia National Archive

The goal of this project is to create awareness about Wikimedia among the GLAM and media community in Ethiopia. The organization who will be approached in the activation will be a start point to spread the word.

The goal of this project when it is quantified will be producing 50 articles (artists biography) and 1000 media contributions in three months. Successfully produce ten active Wikipedia contributors.

Isla is the founder of the WikiAfrica community and she has successfully organized several Wikipedia projects to name a few (Wikiindaba 2014,2017, Wikiloves Woman, WikiAfrica)

Abel Asrat is active member of the WikiAfrica community and hosted the first Wikipedia editing event, formed Creative Commons Ethiopia and also founder of www.addisinsight.com one of the very few online media that exist in Ethiopia.
