Purpose of the report edit

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their progress after completing the first 6 months of their grants. The time period covered in this form will be the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing grant metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Metrics and results overview - all programs edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Grant Metrics. We understand not all Grant or grantee-defined Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and

  1. Next to each required metric, list the outcome/results achieved for all of your programs included in your proposal.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome.

* Many of the grantee-defined metrics were not carried out because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of emergency announced in Armenia. Wikimedia Armenia had to cancel all its planned events and projects because of the situation. Some of the canceled events and projects are Saturday Workshops at Wikimedia Armenia's office, the teachers' seminar which was scheduled for the end of March, 2 Wiki Loves Science events scheduled for May, a community meetup-discussion scheduled for March and many other offline trainings and projects.

Telling your program stories - all programs edit

Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

  • We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
  • Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
  • We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
  • We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.

  COVID-19 an impediment on the way of providing substantial progress

Wikimedia Armenia was planning to organize various events, to start new projects and initiatives to improve the quality and quantity of the content in Armenian Wikipedia, to engage new editors and the experienced ones, to improve the representation of Wikipedia in Armenia, however, the COVID-19 pandemic became an impediment on the way to implementing our plans.

Therefore, based on the requirement of the Wikimedia Foundation and the state of emergency announced in Armenia, Wikimedia Armenia had to cancel all its offline public gatherings, meetings, and projects. This caused several problems as we had to revise our initial plans and adapt them to the current situation. That is why this report will cover mainly the activities done by Wikimedia Armenia before the state of emergency and will reflect the things that Wikimedia Armenia tried to do during the pandemic to continue its progress.

  Quality Content

Quality Content Program is meant for generally improving the content in Armenian Wikipedia. In this reporting period Wikimedia Armenia planned to organize a lot of activities and projects, for instance, a project on ethnic minorities, GLAM initiatives, a project on settlements in Armenia and Artsakh, and many other projects, to contribute to the quality of the content in Armenian Wikipedia. However, the current situation did not allow us to accomplish the majority of what we had initially planned.

Thus, In the Quality Content program, we were able to organize three online edit-a-thons. Mainly the participants were members of various Wikiclubs. The purpose of these edit-a-thons was to engage Wikiclub members in the process of improving the quality of articles in Armenian Wikipedia. The main topics of edit-a-thons were Oscar Winners, art, and weaponry. The results of these offline edit-a-thons were actually very satisfying as overall 840 quality articles were improved and created. As such thematic edit-a-thons are showing more results, we think of organizing them as often as possible. By the way, the importance of these edit-a-thons is not only the fact that they improve the quality and quantity of the articles but also they are carried out online which is especially important in such extraordinary circumstances that we are living now.

Before the pandemic broke out Wikimedia Armenia started a new initiative to improve the progress in the GLAM projects. As it is more effective when people working in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums are aware of Wikipedia and can add information about their cultural institutions by themselves, we decided to cooperate with My Armenia program to organize a training for workers from regional museums. Another important thing about this is that when cultural institutions are more informed about the advantages of Wikipedia, they are more inclined to trust Wikipedia when they have experience in editing and know some things about it. The training was a success; people from 9 regional museums of Armenia participated in it and learned how they can add information about their cultural institutions in Wikipedia and how they can upload pictures in WikiCommons. Also, WikiData was introduced to them. After the training, some people still keep in touch with us to ask questions and seek help. Now we are trying to organize an online workshop-training to engage more workers of cultural institutions to learn to edit Wikipedia. By the way, it can become precedence that will show that Wikimedia Armenia is able to organize online workshops and trainings quite successfully and efficiently.

  Community Program

The purpose of the Community Program is to enlarge and develop the Wiki Community so that it can be mature enough to initiate events and projects by themselves and continue being engaged in the development of Armenian Wikipedia and other Wiki projects, also, to disseminate the Wikimedia movement.

During this reporting period, we initially planned to engage the community by organizing various workshops and trainings to improve their Wiki knowledge. At the same time, as the office of Wikimedia Armenia is quite large, we were planning to simultaneously organize several community meetings and workshops. We put a great emphasis on Saturday workshops, however, some of them did not occur because of the pandemic and the fire in the building where the office of Wikimedia Armenia is located. Thus, only 5 workshops were conducted and now we are successfully organizing online Saturday workshops separately for beginners and experienced editors.

WikiGap campaign

Before the pandemic Wikimedia Armenia was able to organize a meetup with community members in the office of Wikimedia Armenia. The topic of the meeting was the conclusions of the governance audit. The community was very much interested in the results and often asked us to organize a meetup-discussion where they will be able to become more informed about what was going on in Wikimedia Armenia. So, Wikimedia Armenia organized a meetup where the head of the company which conducted the governance audit in Wikimedia Armenia introduced the results and conclusions and answered community members’ questions.

Besides this meetup-discussion, Wikimedia Armenia organized several discussions on the Charter reforms. The discussions were attended by the members of the organization and other stakeholders. The participants, many of which are also Wiki Community members, presented their recommendations, their thoughts, and observations. Such meetup-discussions are quite efficient as they enable the engagement of the organization members in the processes going on in Wikimedia Armenia. Also, Wikimedia Armenia was anticipating to have a meetup in Tsaghkadzor in March to once again discuss the new Charter with the organization members and organize a vote, however, again because of the pandemic it did not occur.

Saturday Workshop

The active members of the Wiki community organized several edit-a-thons during this reporting period. Some parts of the edit-a-thons were held in the office of Wikimedia Armenia before the pandemic and later they continued online without any offline meetings. Meanwhile, others started during the pandemic and were carried out exclusively online. These edit-a-thons concerned various topics: Armenian History, Monuments, WikiGap, and Human Rights. These edit-a-thons engaged a lot of people with various backgrounds, there were also a small number of newcomers. Such thematic edit-a-thons initiated by Wiki Community members always provide good results so we hope that our steps of further involving the community in the Wikimedia movement will encourage them to become more accountable and engaged.

This year Armenian Wikipedia turned 15 and Wikimedia Armenia decided to organize a unique event to celebrate it. What is the greatest gift for Wikipedia if not articles. So Wikimedia Armenia organized an offline two-hour edit-a-thon (this was before the pandemic) in which around 50 Community members participated by creating and improving around 23 articles. Similar thing was done for Wikipedia Day as well. But this time the community members wrote articles as a gift prior to the day. As a result, around 110 people wrote approximately 250 articles as a birthday gift for Wikipedia. All these results show that the Wiki Community has become more engaged and more active than it was before.

  Education Program

For Education Program Wikimedia Armenia planned a lot of offline events and projects, however, many of them were not accomplished and were canceled because of the pandemic. Most importantly, we started the organization process of the “Wikipedia Training for Teachers”, around 45 teachers registered to participate in it, however, we had to cancel it. This is one of the demanded trainings and cancelation of it disappointed a lot of teachers who wanted to know when we will be able to organize a similar training. We will try to think of a better option of doing something alike but online.

Universities/non-formal education

Students from the Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences

As a continuation of the collaboration with various universities, we cooperated with the Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences. During the previous reporting period, we cooperated with Eurasia International University, it did not provide much success so we revisited our methodology and improved it. And as a result, the collaboration with Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences was a great success. By the way, similar collaboration was carried out previously, however, this time it was actually completely new experience because the students not only created articles but also they proofread the articles by themselves (previously it was done by the staff).

The students did their internship in Wikimedia Armenia which lasted 6 weeks. During the first week, the students learned the tools of Wikipedia and started editing, later they were got acquainted with other Wiki platforms like WikiCommons, WikiData. Also, the students were introduced to the operation and activities of Wikimedia Armenia. in the fifth week, the students focused on checking and proofreading their articles. The participants were divided into groups consisting of two people in each, they chose articles randomly and started checking them. As a result, only in one day students checked around 40 articles. The sixth week coincided with the announcement of the state of emergency in Armenia, so the students continued their work online. Students had the chance to ask questions during the video calls that we organized for them. Overall, 30 students did their internship in Wikimedia Armenia and within 6 weeks they created 153 new articles and improved 7 articles, in total 5,198,252 bytes.

After completing their internship, they collectively wrote a newsletter article in the Educational Newsletter of Wikimedia Foundation where they presented their experience and their impressions.

During the previous reporting period, Wikimedia Armenia started a collaboration with the Armenian Educational Foundation, however, it was not very successful. We restarted the collaboration this year and with a new more program. The training with 9 scholarship holders of the Armenian Educational Foundation started offline before the pandemic and three trainings were carried out in the office of Wikimedia Armenia. The volunteers learned how to edit Wikipedia and started creating articles. When the state of emergency started, we canceled the offline trainings and transformed them into online ones. Now the training, which is planned to last 4 months, continues very successfully by using the Zoom application. During this reporting period, the participants wrote 32 articles, in total 1,262,228 bytes.

Winter Youth WikiCamp

Winter Youth WikiCamp is one of the most anticipated events for the youth aged 18-35. More than 123 people had applied for the camp. But due to the strict selection process (it was strict to choose only those who were continuously active before the camp), only 56 people had the chance to participate in the camp.

This Wikicamp was unique because Wikimedia Armenia decided to organize a thematic camp. The camp was dedicated to three topics: economics, medicine, and history. Previously we have organized thematic Wiki Loves Science, however, we never had an experience of such Wikicamp. The effectiveness of the thematic camp is much higher, as within 8 days of the camp the Armenian Wikipedia has been enriched with numerous medical, economic, and historical articles. Camp participants have created 309 articles and lists on medical, economic, and historical topics in Armenian Wikipedia, totaling 10,631,894 bytes. To compare it with last year’s Wikicamp, this camp registered great results. Last year 57 participants edited around 7,925,916 bytes in total.

Out of 56 participants of the camp, 23 were newcomers. A two-day intense workshop was held to quickly engage newcomers in the editorial process, after which newcomers joined experienced editors, evenly distributed in 5 teams. By the way, although the newcomers made their first edits during the camp, at the end of the camp, two of them made a total of 300,000 bytes contribution in Armenian Wikipedia.

We also tried something new during this Wikicamp. We reduced the number of the Wiki team to find out whether it helps the efficiency or not. Formerly the Wiki team included 10 people - 2 for each group; their purpose was to help the editors, teach newcomers and check the technical issues of the articles at the end of each day. However, this new method turned out to be not very productive as the checking of all articles was concentrated on four people. So we will continue the way we used to do.

The camp was full of not only editorial work but also sports and cultural events. It has already become a tradition to visit the Orberli Brothers’ Museum and the ropeway. As part of the camp's cultural events, campers learned Armenian folk songs and national dances and songs from different countries. The most impressive part of the cultural events was the violin concert. During the Fort Wiki game organized at the end of the camp, each group had to walk around the city and perform different tasks. One of these assignments was editorial work. Within an hour one person from each group had to translate an article of about 10,000 bytes which was about a settlement. All groups successfully completed this assignment, creating a total of 5 articles during the game.

WikiClubs

Wikiclubs are one of the most important projects of Wikimedia Armenia. There are already 27 operating WikiClubs in Armenia and Artsakh. Wikimedia Armenia is organizing various edit-a-thons for Wikiclub members who participate in them with great enthusiasm and responsibility. Besides, these edit-a-thons, each Club initiates various events connected to Wiki projects. Moreover, Wikiclubs keep in touch with each other and via video calls collectively create articles. All these things help the club members to maintain their relations with others and strengthen the Wiki community ties. The Wikiclubs also have representation in local media which enables the dissemination of the ideas of the Wiki movement and makes Wikipedia more popular in the regions.

Now when the COVID-19 broke out, Wikiclub members have to work from home. Some of them do not have computers which creates problems. As a result, the activity decreased in March. However, those who have computers, do online workshops with their coordinator via Zoom.

To coordinate the work in Wikiclubs, Wikimedia Armenia organizes a meeting with Wikiclub coordinators from time to time. Such a meeting was organized in January. The purpose of the meeting was to present the annual results of the Wikiclubs and think of future plans. These meetings help us to understand how Wikiclubs are working and what they need to improve. Also, the new automatic way of receiving monthly results of each Wikiclub proves to be efficient as we now completely imagine what club is working productively and which one has to improve its work.

  Organizational development

First of all, because of the fire that occurred in January in the building where the office of Wikimedia Armenia is located, we had to renovate some parts of the office that were damaged.

As it was stated in the proposal Wikimedia Armenia accomplished some reforms to improve the productivity of the work inside the organization. Especially, a warm and respectful atmosphere was created for the staff to work adequately and efficiently. Even before the audit conclusions were provided, there was a transparent atmosphere in Wikimedia Armenia concerning the members of the organization, the community, and the staff. Despite that, some staff members preferred to quit their jobs.

To further improve the functions of the organization, we started drafting the new Charter by inviting various stakeholders, organization members, and community members to participate in the discussions, to present their point of view and make recommendations. The process, unfortunately, halted because of the pandemic but we think of restarting it online.
