Overview - Within its mission and activities, Wikimedia Serbia realizes three programs, through which it intensively works to promote volunteering and integrate the Wiki Platform into the work of educational and cultural institutions. They have a great influence on the youth and the general public, and therefore they can raise awareness about the spread of free knowledge and the possibility that we can all contribute to the increase of free content and equal access to knowledge. Through its Education program, Wikimedia Serbia cooperates with schools, faculties and organizations dealing with non-formal education in order to introduce Wikipedia to ever-increasing number of pupils, volunteers and students. In addition to the students, active participation is also taken by teachers and professors in order to modernize their teaching, work on their professional development and enable students to improve their skills. The greatest share in raising awareness on free knowledge is held by cultural institutions (museums, libraries, archives, and other institutions of public importance), which started the cooperation throughout our GLAM program. The mentioned institutions have very important cultural heritage in their archives, which they are sharing through Wikimedia projects and thus increasing their visibility. Since Wikimedia Serbia is a volunteer organization and part of an international volunteer movement, the organization strives to grow volunteering, which is implemented through all three programs, and especially within the Community Support program.

Education Program

The Education Program is intended for scientific and educational institutions, primarily targeting teachers and students of secondary and higher education institutions. The goals of the program are directed towards the growth and development of Wikimedia projects by enriching the content from an academic perspective and adding new users from academia. Projects within the Education Program are adjusted to the level of education and specific target group and they are being implemented through training and workshops on Wikipedia editing, seminars, edit-a-thons and other events. Each of the projects is aimed at one of the three main target groups:

  1. Pupils and students represent the greatest target group we are currently working with. In most cases they are being introduced to editing Wikipedia for the first time, and our goal is to use the project Wikipedia in Schools as a way to encourage them to continue editing even after the project has ended, but also to interest them in volunteering on various wiki projects.
  2. Teachers, professors and assistants are a very important target group, because they represent the best way to approach students. Although they rarely continue to actively edit Wikipedia after an accredited seminar, we often collaborate with them on the Wikipedia in Schools project, which they see as a chance to modernize their teaching resources and make teaching innovative.
  3. Volunteers are a target group that mostly helps with the realization of activities in the education program. They are mostly students of the final years at the university and most often their activities are related to the Wiki-ambassador position, the promotion of the project Wikipedia in schools, and assistance in the implementation of training and seminars.
Wikipedia in schools

Goal: Introducing Wiki-projects to academic circles

Description: Students write their papers on Wikipedia or other Wiki projects, and in return receive points within their subject exams in school or university.

Accredited seminars

Goal: educating teachers to work independently in order to implement Wiki-projects in their institution

Description: project involves organization of accredited seminars Application of online wiki tools as a didactic means in teaching throughout Serbia. The seminars are accredited by the Institute for Advancement of Education (State Institute for professional development of the teachers) and teachers gain 8 points for professional development by attending it. These seminars are all-day workshop on how to edit Wikipedia and implement it in class. The seminars are designed exclusively for teachers.

Edu Wiki camp

Goal: recruit new Wiki ambassadors and education volunteers and strengthen connections between them

Description: The purposes of this camp are attracting new Wiki ambassadors, additional training of current ones, as well as strengthening the network of education volunteers. Camp program has many different topics, which involves editing Wikipedia training, manners of cooperation with educational institutions, technical skills regarding realization of Education program etc…

Outcomes of the realized projects

Throughout 2019, Wikimedia Serbia continued the trend of increasing the number of participants in the program due to the expansion of cooperation with already existing partners, but also because of the establishment of new collaborations. During the previous year we had 1621 participants in the program, which is the largest number of participants in this program so far.

Wikipedia in schools

The Wikipedia in schools project, which includes a Wiki Gymnasium, a Wiki student, a Wiki-Scholar and other activities in educational institutions, involves training elementary, high school and university students to edit Wiki projects and write seminar papers on Wikipedia. Due to the nature of the project, the activities covered the first semester of the 2018/19 school year (September - January), second semester of the 2018/19 school year and part of the first semester of the 2019/20 school year (September - December 2019).

The previous year was significant for the Education Program in terms of publishing Wikipedia editing video tutorials, the creation of which began in 2018. By the end of 2019, 20 Wikipedia editing tutorials in code have been published, and the agreement was made to create Wikipedia editing video tutorials using Visual Editor in the following 2020 year. During this period, Wikimedia Serbia made significant cooperation with the Belgrade Center for Security Policy, the projects were extended to two faculties of the University of Novi Sad and two high schools in Belgrade and Knjazevac, and for the first time a Wikidata editing workshop was held in a high school. As a part of the Wikipedia in schools project, 58 workshops were held in educational institutions. These workshops were held in 40 educational institutions with which we cooperated during 2019. During the same year, one partnership with educational institution was made through the Community Support Program, as they applied for an annual grant with educational activities. In 2019, we have also found a new Wiki Ambassador at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Applied Studies in Belgrade.

All these results were presented at the local WikiLive conference, at the Digital Humanities conference in Belgrade, at the CEE conference in Belgrade and at the State Seminar of the Society of Mathematicians in Serbia. As a result of participating in the International Wiki Scientific Conference 2019 in Porto, a paper on accredited seminars was published. Additional results can be seen on the Outreach page.

Аccredited seminars

During 2019, 9 seminars for teachers were held, in total attended by 183 teachers, and they brought 180 articles to Wikipedia. The seminar was held in 3 primary schools, 2 high schools, 2 at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš and 2 seminars were held in cooperation with the Institute for Modern Education, which brought together teachers from several schools from across Serbia.

As much as 5 of total 9 seminars were held on the recommendation of participants from previous seminars and on their initiative. A new way of preparing participants for the seminar has been implemented, which implies that teachers prepare ahead better quality articles that they will publish on Wikipedia during the seminar. This has contributed to a decrease in a number of participants compared to the last year, as the preparation is more demanding, but also an increase in the number of participants who are more computer-literate and thus more willing to continue cooperation on other projects of Wikimedia Serbia. This has also contributed to a more effective realization of the seminars, by reducing the difficulties in the practical part of the seminars when teachers submit articles to Wikipedia.

After four held seminars, we continued our collaboration on the Wikipedia in schools project with four teachers, while two more collaborations were agreed and will be implemented during 2020. The success of the seminar is also reflected in the fact that, thanks to the positive experience of the participants, we received recommendations for holding seminars in three schools during 2020.

Еdu Wiki Camp

The Edu Wiki Camp was held in Kladovo and it included workshops, lectures, photo tours, edit-a-thons and other activities. It gathered 16 participants, several of whom continued to engage in activities within the Education Program. The camp was shortened by one day compared to the camps from previous years in order to increase the number of participants. It turned out that the shortening of the camp did not affect the quality of the program and the content intended to be covered by the camp, which made us reach our goal. The only problem has arisen regarding the number of participants enrolled since it has declined from the previous year because the camp was held in July. That is why we are planning to hold the camp in 2020 again in August, because of the assumption that the recently completed exam period had the effect of reducing the number of applications.

At the end of the camp, participants completed the evaluations. They have rated the program, presentations and speakers from 1 to 5. The average rating for the program and presentations was 4.88 out of 5. All participants said that the camp met their expectations.

After the camp, I became Wiki ambassador with a desire to be more serious about communicating with professors and establishing new collaborations.
Miljana Matić and Nebojša Ratković at Edu WIki camp 2019
“I attended Wikipedia editing workshop at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Belgrade, and I was interested in further engaging in this field. This was followed by my application for the Edu Wiki Camp in 2019 in Kladovo where I gained additional knowledge and skills about Wiki projects. After the camp, I became Wiki ambassador with a desire to be more serious about communicating with professors and establishing new collaborations.”

Miljana Matić, Wiki Ambassador at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Belgrade

I would like to establish collaboration with the Center for Museology and Heritology.
Miloš Todorović
"As а part of an Education program during the 2018/19 school year, the cooperation with the Career Development Center of the Faculty of Philosophy continued. Because of better relations with the professors of the Cabinet for Foreign Languages and the Center for Museology and Heritology, I would like to try again in the following period to establish cooperation with them. I would also like to establish a collaboration with the Center for Urban Development, which organizes the "Communication of Archaeology" internship for archaeology students to make Wikipedia editing workshops become a part of the internship."

Miloš Todorović, Wiki ambassador at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.

Successful stories

Closer cooperation with schools in southern Serbia

In 2019, cooperation was established with the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš, with the intention of mutual organizing of accredited seminars for teachers from the south of Serbia. This Faculty has extensive experience in organizing various professional training courses and an extensive network of contacts with teachers from Niš and the surrounding area, which has provided us with a good basis for promoting Wiki projects in these schools. After two successful seminars, there was a strong interest in additional seminars, but also in the continuation of cooperation with individual teachers on the Wikipedia in schools project. One cooperation has already been realized at the Technical School in Knjaževac, where an accredited seminar will be organized in 2020. With this we have learned that it is possible and expedient to use the existing network of associates in certain regions by partnering with only one institution, which will inevitably lead to cooperation with others, as this saves time and human resources.

Strengthen cooperation with other non-governmental organizations

Wikimedia Serbia has cooperated with the Belgrade Center for Security Policy and with the EU Info Center in Serbia. These collaborations have been made in the field of non-formal education implemented by the above-mentioned organizations in their field of activity. In doing so, we have brought Wikipedia closer to a broader target group by writing articles on related topics, popularizing Wikimedia projects in Serbia and acquiring a new circle of contributors that will enable us to enrich Wikipedia with various content. With this we have shown the flexibility of Wikipedia and its applicability in various fields, especially among the youth and student population. These collaborations, in addition to the existing ones with the Unitas Fund and the Red Cross of Serbia, have led us to become recognizable carriers of free knowledge, but also to increase the visibility of our activities.

Challenges and lessons learned

Organize Edu Wiki Camp before the start of the new school year

After the experience of moving the date of the Edu Wiki Camp in 2019 from August to July, we have concluded that we had more applicants and better quality of participants when the camp was held in August, before the start of the new school year. Since we held the camp in July, just before the end of the exam period, we realized that there was a smaller response of interested students. Some of the factors that contributed to the lower response were: insufficient awareness of the camp as students were busy preparing the exams and insufficient motivation for students to apply for side activities during exam preparation. It was concluded that Edu Wiki Camp 2020 would be held in August.

Instruct professors to maintain continuous communication with students during project implementation

During the implementation of the Olympic sports through history project, for which the Faculty of Sport of the University of Union-Nikola Tesla received a Wikimedia Serbia grant, there were difficulties in realization. Technically, the professors who were engaged in the implementation of this project within the Education program, had a problem in their own organization between project participants who quit participating without informing the project leader on time and thus made a big problem in the realization of the project. In our estimation, the problem was caused by the lack of continuous communication, rare team meetings and summer break during July and August, after which the motivation to engage in the project has fallen. This has been overcome by increasing intensity of activities and more frequent team meetings and consultations with students.

GLAM Program

GLAM is a standard program implemented by Wikimedia Serbia, based on the reputation of successful projects in other Wikimedia chapters. The diversity of this program enables a wide range of cooperation with cultural institutions and other similar organizations, as well as individuals. The aim of the program is to develop two-way cooperation in creating and improving the availability of cultural and historical heritage of Serbia on the Internet. The focus of Wikimedia Serbia will be to achieve stable and long-term cooperation with the institutions of culture, primarily those based on the GLAM acronym, as well as all other cultural institutions that want to participate in the creation of open and free content.

Outcome of the realized projects
Wikipedian in Residence

Within the framework of the GLAM program, the successful cooperation of Wikimedia Serbia with the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia continued, within which funds were obtained for the implementation of three internship programs. The Internship Programs (Wikipedian in Residence) were organized in 2019 with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information and the full involvement of Wikimedia Serbia's GLAM capacity.

In 2019, seven internship programs were organized at seven different cultural institutions respectively, while one other internship from 2018 continued and ended in 2019.

  1. Theater Museum of Vojvodina (2018/2019),
  2. Museum of Science and Technology,
  3. Svetozar Markovic University Library,
  4. Serbian National Theater,
  5. Museum of Vojvodina Slovaks,
  6. Negotin Historical Archive,
  7. Karlovac High School and
  8. Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Zrenjanin.

The Wikipedian in Residence program involved six interns in eight different institutions. Since the emphasis is on decentralization of activities, a public call for persons interested in internships has been opened in different cities of Serbia . Although it was a short period of time (one month), the response was satisfactory.

Wiki Loves GLAMers

A total of 19 Wikipedia editing workshops were held as part of the Wiki Librarian project. First, there were two workshops at the University Library "Svetozar Markovic" to support the #1Lib1Ref action. The participants of this action were employees of the University Library and the Belgrade City Library. In addition, editors were able to join the action online. A total of 1672 references were added, which is twice as much as in 2018 when 798 references were added.

A number of activities were held within the Wiki Librarian project, which emphasizes the diversity of the project and the different approaches the team uses for its improval. There were 4 two-day Wiki Librarian workshops, as well as 2 edit-a-thons. Three practical workshops were held for students of the Department of Librarianship and Informatics at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade. There were 4 additional workshops for participants who had attended the courses during 2019 and earlier.

This year, a Wikipedian in Residence was also a part of the Wiki Librarian project. The intern completed the work during March. In total, 158 files were uploaded, and the intern wrote 17 new articles, 14 well improved and 24 articles edited with minor changes or illustrations.

Legacy of the Southeast - The idea of the project is to establish cooperation with cultural institutions and other institutions of importance located in the southeastern Serbia, as well as to digitize and release the cultural and historical heritage in their possession. Within the project, exhibitions in cultural institutions were visited and photographed. Photo tours resulted in 2004 images and 30 articles.

Digitization at the Zrenjanin National Museum - The project of the cultural institution National Museum in Zrenjanin is a continuation of last year's project of digitization of museum collections. Wikimedia Serbia has assigned a scanner to the institution, and the Museum team digitized analog materials and placed them on Wikimedia Commons. During this year's project, the team that worked on the project was expanded, training three other employees for this process. In total, 333 files have been digitized and uploaded.

Campaign #1lib1ref - this year, GLAM activities began with the global Campaign #1lib1ref, this time ranking Serbia at the top of the wiki communities that made the most references on Wikipedia Day. A total of 28 editors of Serbian Wikipedia have added as many as 1672 references into articles where they were missing. In addition, the winner in Serbia, User:Vanilica placed second in the world by the number of contributions. During the course of the campaign, two editing workshops were held at the University Library, and after this competition, the best participants were awarded prizes - book vouchers and gift bags.

WMRS Spring Cleaning on Commons - Wikimedia Serbia launched a one-month campaign of editing files on Wikimedia Commons in March, especially listing and using images that were uploaded as part of GLAM projects, photo competitions and other community projects. The goal of the campaign was to increase the usage of images and other files on wiki projects, as well as to properly categorize, describe, and use uploaded photos to illustrate Wikipedia articles. The action started with a Wikipedia editing workshop, together with a lecture on Wikimedia Commons, as well as the basics of copyright when it comes to these and other wiki platforms. Afterwards, participants edited photos and other files on Commons. At the conclusion of the action, within the framework of the local WikiLive conference, participants with the most edits were awarded the prizes (vouchers for the purchase of technology and books).

In the information world, accessibility and openness are of the utmost importance.
Aleksandar Tumarić and Anka Seč-Pinćir
"In 2018, the Museum of Slovaks in Vojvodina began to cooperate with Wikimedia Serbia. The Museum of Slovaks in Vojvodina was the first institution of national minority culture in Serbia to be the part of the GLAM program, given the ethnic mosaic of Serbia, and in this way our institution became more visible together with the history, culture and tradition of the Slovak national minority in Serbia. The interns at our institution were highly professional, responsible and open to collaboration, so their entire contribution is exceptional. I would recommend cooperation with Wikimedia Serbia to every other cultural heritage institutions, to share their knowledge, content, collections and make information more accessible to anyone who seeks them. In the information world, accessibility and openness are of the utmost importance."

Anka Seč-Pinćir, director of the Museum of Slovaks in Vojvodina

The program included Wikipedia-editing training for the staff, which allows the Museum to further improve articles and its presence on this online encyclopedia.
Ivana Guslarević and Rifat Kulenović
"Collaboration with Wikimedia Serbia has increased the visibility of the Museum and its content on the Internet, as well as the presence of the Museum of Science and Technology on Wikipedia, which contributes to a better presentation of our country's cultural heritage.

The Wikimedia Serbia’s team has shown a professional level of activity in the field of free culture, as well as a commitment to achieving their mission of spreading free knowledge. The program also included Wikipedia-editing training for the staff, which allows the Museum to further improve articles and its presence on this encyclopedia.”

Rifat Kulenović, director of the Science and Technology Museum

The released content can be used to further explore and spread the significance of cultural treasure.
Aleksandar Jerkov
"University Library Svetozar Markovic from Belgrade has a long-standing cooperation with Wikimedia Serbia within the grant Wiki Librarian program. Cooperation with cultural institutions and institutions of public importance (GLAM institutions) is of great importance for Serbia's cultural heritage. Placing free content in the form of postcards, photographs and digitized material into new or improved articles on Wikipedia, the largest online free encyclopedia, enriches scientific, cultural and historical content in open access. The released content can be used to further explore and spread the significance of cultural treasure."

Aleksandar Jerkov, director of the Svetozar Markovic University Library

Successful stories

GLAM decentralization and support from the Ministry of Culture and Information

Most of the GLAM activities have been deployed to different parts of the country in 2019, which is a great way to expand and sustain this program in the future. In addition to internships in the cities like Bački Petrovac, Novi Sad, Negotin and Zrenjanin, other projects are being implemented outside of Belgrade, such as Heritage of the Southeast and Digitization of the Collections of the National Museum in Zrenjanin. The cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia contributes greatly to this. GLAM institutions' perception of material release and collaboration with Wikimedia has significantly improved. The Ministry of Culture and Information approved the funds for the implementation of the internship program and enabled additional three internships. Also, the support of the state has added extra significance and reference to our program, so other cultural institutions are now ready to open their door for Wikipedian in Residence and other forms of collaboration.

Wikipedian in Residence has proven to be a great collaborative model

Wikimedia Serbia has successfully implemented a number of internship programs over the past few years, in which GLAM institutions released content, gave access to relevant literature to Wikipedians, and participated in Wikipedia-editing workshops. This model has proven to be very effective and easy to adapt to the needs of the institution. An intern can focus on digitizing books if it is a library, but can also focus on releasing documents and photographs in the case of a museum or archive. It is also important to point out that we were going beyond the existing frameworks because we were able to implement an internship program within the oldest gymnasium in Serbia. Although it is an educational institution, it had its own historic library to offer and thus be part of the GLAM program.

Challenges and lessons learned

Challenges in the absence of an employed person to the position of GLAM Coordinator

During 2019, Wikimedia Serbia was left without a GLAM coordinator. This was followed by a period that brought certain challenges when employees had more workload. Due to good distribution of tasks, efficient organization of time and involvement of volunteers, the GLAM program continued to be implemented smoothly. Emphasis was placed on internships, and they were fully implemented as planned. In parallel with the CEE Conference, the process of finding new employee was organized, where a new GLAM Coordinator was selected near the end of the year and began her work in January 2020.

Community Support

The Community Support Program involves the implementation of numerous activities aimed at empowering the community that is at the core of the movement and organization. The projects implemented under this program are WikiLive conference, Competitions on Wikipedia as well as various activities within Community motivation. Also, Wikimedia Serbia this year organizes an international conference for the communities from Central and Eastern Europe. That's why it will be part of the report.

There are several types of volunteers to whom support is provided through various program activities:

  • Online volunteers - in many cases, they are editors of Wiki projects (mostly Wikipedia) who contribute in increasing free content, but for some reason they are not prone to frequent meet-ups or are more comfortable editing than participating in project activities.
  • Volunteers who participate in projects and events organized by Wikimedia Serbia. They are mostly people who were introduced to Wikipedia through WMRS projects (education projects, camps, conferences ...) and continued to volunteer in the organization.
  • Offline volunteers - volunteers engaged in translation, event organization, logistical help related to meet-ups or Wiki Stand. Although they do not actively edit Wikipedia, they help the organization through the activities that are most in line with their interests.

Goal: Enabling members of Serbian Wikipedia community to get to know each other, networking and strengthening the connections between them by team problem solving and new project creation.

Description: WikiLive is a local annual Wikipedian conference, which is conceived with the idea of strengthening the spirit of the community, interconnecting participants and involving them in the WMRS programs. The conference consists of a two-day program covering various topics from Wikipedia.

Competition on Wikipedia

Goal: Increasing the motivation and active participation of the community in Wiki projects.

Description: Competitions on Wikipedia are organized several times a year. They usually last for a month (except CEE Spring) during which participants write and improve articles on various topics. Members of the jury evaluate the articles, after which winners are proclaimed and rewarded. Contests are a good way to reduce the gap between Wikimedians and Wikipedians.

Community motivation

Goal: Establishing better communication with the community and reducing the gap between Wikipedians and Wikimedians.

Description: Within the project, activities such as community gatherings, microgrants, organization of Wiki stand at public events, birthday celebrations, support for individuals in relation to the realization of activities and informing the community about various events through various communication channels are being realized.

Outcomes of the realized projects

WikiLive is an annual conference that aims to connect editors and volunteers, share knowledge and address current issues on Wikipedia. Because of being this type of event, the evaluation of the conference is done through the results of questionnaires completed by the conference participants. The conference was held for the fifth time in a row, so there was no problem with the organization itself. It is important to note that this year there was more interest in volunteering within the organization of the event and that in doing so we expanded the volunteer capacity of the organization. In addition to the volunteers who were dedicated to logistical matters, the Program Team was actively working to gather new ideas and topics to be addressed at the conference. An invitation to submit presentations was issued, but the response was not great. However, topics of most interest were identified and external speakers were provided. The aforementioned new concepts were: communication training, specifically aimed at conflict prevention and productive discussions, copyright and case studies. The program has been strengthened by technical sessions aimed at helping editors and show them all the benefits of the tools available. In order to increase interactivity, tools like Menti were used to keep the audience as much involved as possible.

The conference lasted two days, and apart from lectures, it also contained round tables, panel discussions as well as interactive workshops. About 100 persons attended and participated in the conference. Of the 45 participants who completed the evaluation questionnaire, 29 (64.4%) said they were fully satisfied with the conference (5 out of 5), while 16 persons rated 4. When it comes to stimulating discussion, 31 participants gave a rating of 5, other 8 gave a rating of 4, additional 5 gave a rating of 3, and only one participant was not satisfied with encouraging the discussion. Most of the participants (60%) thought the topics were interesting enough and useful.

Apart from this, there were significant comments regarding the sessions and the lecturers themselves. Top rated sessions are: copyright lecture, advanced Wikipedia editing, and project-writing workshop. Compliments were given to new features such as communication training hosted by external lecturers, as well as Menti, a platform meant to increase interaction during sessions. Of the 45 participants who completed the survey, only one participant would not attend the conference again.

Competition on Wikipedia

During 2019, Wikimedia serbia organized three competitions on Serbian Wikipedia as planned. During the three competitions (CEE Spring 2019, Acting, Notable Women), 700 articles were written and 105 articles were improved.

CEE Spring has had the most successful results due to its length, and its comprehensiveness. During this competition, 429 articles were written and 46 articles were improved. Since the competition is being organized for the fifth consecutive year, the following are comparative results by year:

As the results are slightly weaker than in recent years, a survey was organized for the contestants to try to see what demotivated the editors. 14 out of 15 participants who completed the survey said the competition should continue to be organized. Those who participated in earlier years but not in 2019 cited a lack of time for the competition as a reason. 11 out of 15 consider the length of the competition appropriate. In the survey, participants indicated that the good sides of the competition were the wideness of the topic list as well as enough time to write articles. As the best motivating factors, participants indicated that they liked a variety of topics, that they liked to contribute to free knowledge, and that they even liked to participate and not necessarily compete. When it comes to rewards, vouchers for buying things are most appealing because they give them some freedom of choice. As part of the 2019 competition, participants entered 8,781,383 bytes. Although the number of articles is lower than last year (740 in 2018, 475 in 2019), the difference in bytes is not large (11 million in 2018, almost 9 million in 2019), which indicates that competitors have devoted more time for writing more meaningful and extensive articles.

Community motivation

Community motivation includes microgrants, organization of gatherings and celebrations, Wiki Stand, edit-a-thons, as well as projects by individuals who make significant contributions to Wiki projects.

  • Microgrants - In 2019, we supported as many as eight diverse ideas that were successfully implemented. The ventures, apart from Belgrade, were realized on the territory of Mount Rtanj, in Niš and Novi Sad. Participants enriched Wikimedia Commons by 4283 images, and Serbian Wikipedia by 580 articles. There is a noticeable increase in the number of articles compared to previous years. From 2014 to 2019, a total of 24853 photographs and videos were collected through the microgrants award process, and a total of 1624 articles were written and improved.

  • Projects that contribute significantly to the Wiki projects - During 2019, two projects of already experienced volunteers were implemented. "Šumadija in the palm of my hand" and "Roadside memorials and tombstones in Serbia" are projects that have resulted in 12000 photos and 565 articles. They are unique in a way that they are realized by individuals who are very active members of the community. They manage to transfer their passion to Wiki projects and share them with people of similar interests in Serbia.
  • Edit-a-thons - In 2019, four edit-a-thons were organized. Edit-a-thon on International Women’s Day was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs and the Serbian-Korean Information Access Center. Participants wrote biographies of significant women in the field of science, education, culture, art and communication. The edit-a-thon was held symbolically on March 8, and during the event, 56 articles were written and 6 articles were improved. This is also the highest number of articles ever written on WMRS edit-a-thons. Wikimedia Serbia supported the WikiGap campaign this year as well. Last year, a Wikipedia editing workshop where participants wrote about women leaders in the shadow, was held in Niš, where 18 articles have been written. The workshop was organized by the Embassy of Sweden, Startup Center in Niš and the "Young Ambassadors" organization. In the second quarter, an edit-a-thon on sports was organized, bearing in mind that this was the wish of the community and that the topic was not covered enough on Serbian Wikipedia. During the edit-a-thon, 38 articles were written and improved.
  • "Wiki Loves Pride" project has also had a lot of success in 2019. The participants of this project were part of "Wikipedia for Peace/Europride" which took place in Vienna from June 11-16, 2019. Civil Rights Defenders donated 15 photos from previous pride parades in Belgrade. During 2019, two Pride Parades were held (June, September) in Belgrade and the images from these events were uploaded on Commons. This edit-a-thon was held on September 10th and by many parameters has surpassed all the previous ones. Out of a total of 20 participants, 9 of them opened new accounts. For the first time, more people participated offline than online, and for the first time we had non-binary and trans people as participants at one of the Wikimedia events in Serbia. In total, 40 new articles have been written, making it one of the most successful edit-a-thons in the history of Wikimedia Serbia (together with the edit-a-thons on International Women's Day and socialist Yugoslavia).
  • Throughout the year, Wikimedia Serbia has repeatedly organized community gatherings, as well as birthdays of Wikipedia (global), Serbian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Serbia as an organization. The two most important gatherings during the year are certainly the Assembly sessions. At the December session of the Assembly, the organization received a new president, which provides an opportunity for relatively young members to lead the organization and introduce novelties in the future.

CEE Meeting 2019

In October 2019, Wikimedia Serbia was the host of the CEE Meeting 2019. During the year, many activities were undertaken in order to bring together as many Wikipedians and Wikimedians as possible so they could share their experiences. A community survey was also conducted to make the program, which was formed by an international program committee, more community-friendly.

The conference was more than successfully organized, a report was prepared and published, as well as the results of an evaluation survey, and a blog post for the international community.

The goal of the project is to introduce Wikipedia to people who, after reaching retirement, have completed their work but still want to pursue their profession and continue to contribute actively to the community.
Milica Buha
"The goal of the project is to introduce Wikipedia, to people who, after reaching retirement, have completed their work but still want to pursue their profession and continue to contribute actively to the community. Numerous sociological research conducted on the topic of retirement and volunteer work has led to the conclusion that this type of engagement with our older fellow citizens would bring many benefits. First, it gives them sense of purpose and social utility, then the fulfillment of free time, the pursuit of new technologies and a number of other benefits. In addition, since the workshops were held regularly once a week, they created a sense of obligation for the attendees and also provided an opportunity for quality socializing. The results after the first year of the project showed that our assumptions were correct. The attendees of our workshops really enjoy these activities, but that's not all. In this way, the Belgrade City Library became actively involved not only in the process of disseminating free knowledge, but also in the process of permanent adult education, and Serbian Wikipedia is enriched with a large number of quality articles. The biggest benefit of this project, however, is for the end users, who have access to a great deal of useful information.”

Milica Buha, Wiki Senior project leader.

We used Wikipedia to raise awareness of the importance of forests.
Nikola Veljkovic
"We have noticed that the reliability and precision of the information available on species that inhabit the forested areas of Serbia is relatively small, and these habitats are often degraded by (il)legal deforestation, construction of infrastructure, etc. By conducting Wiki Loves Forests project, we tried to enrich the amount of free information on plants, fungi and animals of forest habitats in order to raise awareness of their importance. The project included multiple field trips in the spring, summer and fall with the goal of capturing photographs of species of forest ecosystems, which were subsequently used to write articles about them on Wikipedia. In addition to the metrics of the project, well-written articles constantly provide, and will provide, the general public with the opportunity to be informed in terms of nature protection. With the strengthening of team spirit and constant socializing with people of similar interests in the field, in nature, every experience gained in coordinating and organizing any kind of events prepares us for better organization of the next similar activities. Therefore, I would encourage anyone interested to gather the team and without any hesitation, apply for one of the next Wikimedia grant calls in Serbia.”

Nikola Veljkovic, Project Leader of Wiki Loves Forests.

Our idea was to present Serbian scientists from the field of agriculture, to a wide audience.
Oja Krinulovic
Igor Zivanovic
"We submitted a project at Wikimedia Serbia in an effort to increase the number of articles on Serbian Wikipedia in the field of agriculture and related sciences. We also wanted to present Serbian scientists who contributed to the development of agriculture and fell into oblivion to a wide audience. The project included writing articles in the field of agriculture and related sciences, visiting agricultural institutions and agricultural goods, agricultural fair and schools of agriculture, as well as digitization of old agricultural publications from the University Library "Svetozar Markovic" in Belgrade. An exhibition was successfully organized in Belgrade. All project activities were successfully completed and we can say that the overall implementation did not deviate from what was originally planned. Participants were very interested and delighted with the idea of creating articles in the field of agriculture and scientists on Wikipedia. We are pleased with how things went, so we hope to continue our successful collaboration with Wikimedia Serbia. Wikimedia Serbia is a very successful organization and has been operating professionally for many years, and every kind of cooperation with them is a real pleasur”

Igor Zivanovic and Oja Krinulovic, project leaders of the Agricultural Science Project in Serbia

Successful stories

Participants of the CEE Spring Competition prioritized quality over quantity when it came to articles

CEE Spring 2019 was implemented on Serbian Wikipedia from March 21 to May 31. During this period, participants wrote 429 articles and improved 46. During the competition, participants contributed with 8,781,383 bytes. Although the number of articles is lower than last year (740 in 2018, 475 in 2019), the difference in bytes is not large (11 million in 2018, almost 9 million in 2019), which indicates that competitors have devoted more time to more meaningful and extensive articles.

It is important to see the potential of partners whose fields of interest are not necessarily closely related to Wiki projects

During the wide range of activities that Wikimedia Serbia has organized, we have learned how much we can gain knowledge from external partners and associates whose topics and expertise are not necessarily related to Wiki projects. A great deal of interest in this was triggered by a lecture on copyright by a lawyer, as well as a communication training by a consulting agency at the WikiLive conference. Different views on the same things can lead to the development of new working methods, new models of collaboration and involving diverse participants in projects that can increase their quality.
