In our Impact Report 2017, we reported on staff changes and the loss of several very active and skilled volunteers. To a certain extent, this still affected our operational capacity in 2018. Only two staff (out of six) have more than a year's experience in their current job, but we are getting back up to speed. Main themes in 2018 were diversity and capacity building.

Writing about the women of the Dutch Caribbean
The information to be found in the Wikimediaprojects about the Caribbean Netherlands is not yet as wide and as thorough as it should be. Following on our cooperation with UNESCO on Antillean heritage, we organised a four week Skype course on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata to staff of universities in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. Representatives of the Dutch Caribbean community in the Netherlands took part in a Wikipedia- editing course and we are organising monthly meetings at the National Archive to expand, supplement and update information on Suriname and the Caribbean.
There are still many more men than women actively contributing to Wikipedia. In 2018, we organized two hackathons under the name Wiki Women Techstorm. The aim of the Techstorm was to inspire women and people with a non-binary gender identity to contribute to the technical side of the Wikimedia projects and introduce them to coding and tools.
We cooperate with prominent institutions in the heritage sector and in higher education. This cooperation is based on win-win formula. The collections and knowledge that these institutions hold make Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms richer and more complete. The institutions in turn are able to reach a huge audience via Wikipedia and sister projects; their collections are enriched by an active volunteer community. The interest in cooperating with Wikimedia is growing. To meet the demand, we focused on capacity building, training and the development of tools that enable partners to contribute independently to the Wikimedia projects.

Wikimedia Introduction Workshops
Experience shows that one-off writing events have hardly any return in terms of recruiting new editors or creating new content. For this reason, WMNL has stopped organizing such activities this year. Instead, we have organized a series of Introduction Workshops.
Introduction Workshops were organized at the Wikimedia Netherlands office on 15, 29 March and 12 April. In a nutshell, the participants looked at which other Wikimedia projects there are besides Wikipedia and how they can participate. A total of 18 people participated in these Introduction Workshops. According to the evaluation, the course provided the attendants with sufficient information to contribute to Wikimedia independently. During the "Editing Wikipedia in-depth afternoons" on 26 May and 9 June, participants were given the opportunity to go deeper into the depths. 14 people took part in this.
For the guidance of new editors, the Facebook group "Wiki questions!" Has been facilitated, based on the positive experiences of the gender gap Facebook group. This Facebook group now has 14 members, including 6 experienced Wikipedians who have taken on the role of supervisor.

Wikipedia beginners manual
As part of our new approach to editor training and recruitment, we published the first version of the Wikipedia Beginners Guide in December 2017 and asked the community to review it and give suggestions for improvement. In July 2018 a second version was uploaded based on feedback from the Wikimedia movement.
At the end of September 2018, the manual was also published in book form by Van Duuren Media, a commercial publishing company. On Saturday 29 September, Frans Grijzenhout, chair of Wikimedia Netherlands, presented the first printed copy of the manual "Writing for Wikipedia" to professor emeritus of psychology Dolph Kohnstamm. The presentation took place during the General Members' Meeting (GMM) in the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht. 583 copies of the manual were sold in 2018.
It is interesting that a commercial publisher would be willing to publish a text which is freely available under a CC-0 license.
'In real life' events
The community mainly communicates online. However, experience shows that editors also have the need to meet each other in person. For the working atmosphere it is also good that editors speak to each other personally. Wikimedia Nederland organizes various meetings throughout the year and supports partner institutions and volunteers to make meetings between editors possible.
Wikimedia Nederland finds it important that the meetings are as inclusive as possible and offer a pleasant environment for everyone. Also for people who are sensitive to over-stimulation. For this reason, Wikimedia Netherlands has begun to collect information about overstimulation during meetings and to formulate recommendations for conference organizers. New Year's reception
Saturday January 20 the new year reception of Wikimedia Nederland took place in the University Museum Utrecht. Under the watchful eye of around eighty Wikipedians, seven Wiki Owls were awarded to the most appreciated contributions to the Dutch-language Wikipedia in 2017. In addition, the winners of the Wikipedia Writing Contest were announced.
Wiki Friday
Together with Atria, the Knowledge Institute for Emancipation and Women's History, the Gender Gap Working Group organized twelve Wiki Fridays in 2018. A volunteer from the Gender Gap Working Group is present at the Atria Library on WikiVrijdagen to help edit Wikipedia. The aim is to inspire more women to participate actively and to make better information about women and women's history available.

Wiki Saturday
This year too, the Wikimedia Netherlands office in Utrecht was open on Saturdays every two weeks. Volunteers meet on WikiZaterdagen to work on association activities, to edit Wikipedia together or just for socializing. This year 54 people attended a WikiZaterdag one or more times, compared to seventy people in 2017. It is striking that the general Wiki Saturdays in particular declined in the number of visitors. The WikiZaterdagen theme, on the other hand, was well-attended. For that reason, it has been decided to organize the WikiZaterdagen less frequently in 2019 and to link them to a theme.
Wiki Café Tilburg

In 2018, the Wiki Café was organized monthly in the Tilburg Center Library. Brabant Wikipedia editors meet in the library and new Wikipedians get the chance to learn more about writing, source research and other issues related to Wikipedia.
Wikikring Twente
Hengelo Library again offered support and space to Wikipedia groups this year by organizing a monthly Wikikring together with Wikimedia Nederland. To write together for Wikipedia, for example about Twente. It is mainly about the offline enjoyment of online knowledge sharing.
E-learning online communication: problematic
The e-learning program Online communication and manners developed and tested in 2017 was introduced in 2018. This program, developed by the eCoachPro agency, aims to make Wikipedians collaborate and communicate more effectively online - on Wikipedia but also in all other online situations. The emphasis is on strengthening online writing and reading skills. The program gives the participants insight into what lies behind the way in which others (and themselves) communicate, and how they can respond strategically, even in difficult situations. This year a total of 20 people participated in the e-learning training. Wikipedians who have done the program are enthusiastic.
Effective communication for Wikipedians
“I was allowed to help with the development of the course. The first chapter is about the online encyclopedia and the way in which communication is made between users there: the other chapters help you gain insight into your own way of behavior and communication, including the (interesting!) Theory of the Rose of Leary. The course is definitely recommended and I would like to hand out a compliment if someone completes it completely. ”- Ciell, Wikipedian
The NLWikipedia Arbcom in one case 'ordered' a Wikipedian to complete the course as an alternative to imposing a bloc for his behaviour. The Wikipedian in question completed the course and gave positive feedback.
As we expected, Wikipedians are having problems crossing the threshold to this e-learning programme. They enjoy the training once they have started. Our challenge now is to get them to start. A major problem is that we have no effective means of communicating with the entire editing community. As a result, only a relatively small section of the 1300 active editors know about the training.
The content of the training will not become outdated or obsolete, and Wikimedia Nederland is willing to support it long term. We will continue to bring it to the attention of the community, and also make it part of our own train-trainers programmes.
Editor Survey
Wikimedia Nederland conducted a survey among Wikipedia workers in 2013 and 2015. The focus in those studies was on gaining insight into the profile, wishes, needs and expectations of the supporters of Wikimedia Netherlands. The research was repeated in 2018 and mainly focused on developments in the area of participation by women, working atmosphere and conflict resolution.
From December 1 to December 16, logged-in Wikipedia workers were able to complete the survey: they saw a banner on Wikipedia with a link to the survey. In addition, the 250 most active Wikipedians were personally approached via their consultation page with the request to participate in the survey. This means that the results may have a bias in the direction of the very active users. A total of 303 forms were received. Below is a summary of the response.
Looking behind the scenes: the 2018 editor survey
Sharing knowledge is the most important motivation for processors
For the majority of the editors, the most important reason for making a substantive contribution to Wikipedia is to want to share knowledge and information. The absence of topics on Wikipedia is therefore the most frequently cited reason for starting to edit Wikipedia.
Most of the processors communicate with each other
The majority of processors communicate with other editors; only one in seven never does this. Consultation pages are the most used means of communication for this, followed by "De Kroeg" and personal e-mail. A quarter of the editors sometimes meet other Wikipedia editors in person. The most frequently mentioned reason for visiting a meeting for Wikipedians is therefore to meet other editors. A third of all editors have no interest in the meetings for Wikipedians and therefore have never visited one.
Wikipedia community is not very diverse
The majority of the Wikipedia community consists of Dutch, highly educated men with an age of more than 40 years. Only 10% of editors are women and 3% of editors have a non-Western migration background. According to the majority of editors, a low proportion of female editors has negative consequences, particularly for the diversity of subjects. According to one sixth of the editors, a smaller proportion of editors with a non-Western migration background also have negative consequences for the diversity of subjects. 13% of the respodents indicated that they have Autism Spectrum Disorder, compared to 1-2% in the Dutch population.
Work atmosphere is an important threshold
The working atmosphere in the Dutch-language Wikipedia has been described by the editors primarily as "rowdy" (45%), but is also often perceived as "constructive". The working atmosphere is the main reason for editing stress and for editors to stop editing Wikipedia. It also forms a barrier to a stronger involvement of editors in activities. For example, the negative working atmosphere has been mentioned by a number of editors as a reason not to want to hold a position and as a reason not to want to contribute to the Movement Strategy 2030. In addition, improving the atmosphere and mutual communication is the most desirable change.
Content quality is an important aspect for editors
The substantive quality of articles and the use of resources are important aspects for processors. To support an article on the Dutch-language Wikipedia, an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and a statistical database of scientific and government institutions are by far the most useful sources, according to editors. Social media and oral history score low. In addition, the low quality of edits by others is a cause of work stress for one sixth of the editors. Improving the content quality of articles is also one of the most frequently mentioned areas for improvement within the Wikimedia movement.
A small part of the editors is actively involved in Movement Strategy 2030
About half of the editors have heard of Movement Strategy 2030. Of these editors, only a tenth have also actively participated in the strategy process, for example, by attending a discussion meeting, participating in an online discussion, or commenting on texts. This is equivalent to only 6% of all editors. A fifth of the editors is willing (in the future) to contribute to Movement Strategy 2030. The majority of them want to do this (only) by commenting on documents.

Small grants
A total of five small grants were awarded in 2018 for a total amount of € 790.16. They were travel expenses, entrance fees, reference works and prize money for writing meetings. One application concerned the organization of a meeting of moderators of the Dutch-language Wikipedia.
Small grant used to purchase two books to improve articles on professors of law

The books have enabled me to detect two copyright violations. Namely the article about Willem Pompe and the institution named after him. With the help of the book 16 lawyers and their philosophical inspiration and two other sources, I have been able to write a new, more complete and comprehensive article. For the next addition I could use both 16 lawyers and Lawyer portraits. This was an addition to the Gerard Wiarda entry. Wiarda is one of the best known lawyers in the Netherlands. Mainly because of his various high positions within the judiciary. Thanks to 16 lawyers and Lawyer portraits, I was able to give Wiarda an entry that he deserves. Wim van der Grinten then received an extension. This lawyer may be less well-known or distinguished than Wiarda and has a (in my opinion) less exciting specialization, but thanks to Lawyer portraits he now has a fairly complete biography. Then I wrote another article about Hendrik van Eikema Hommes. A somewhat peculiar lawyer who actually never managed to get out of the shadow of his teacher. There is currently an article about Maarten Pleun Vrij in the pipeline. One of the greeatest criminal lawyers of the last century. The books still offer quite a bit of material for more articles / extensions, so to be continued!
Other forms of support
WMNL was approached by a very active Wikipedian who receives social security benefits from the local authority. In the Netherlands, one of the conditions attached to such benefits is that the recipient carries out volunteer work. At this editor’s request, we wrote a letter to the relevant local social security department confirming and explaining the editor’s contribution to the Wikimedia projects over many years. The local authority accepted contributing to Wikipedia as legitimate volunteer work, which means that the editor can not be compelled to do other types of volunteering.
We revised our reimbursement policy. The policy had not been changed for six years and did not reflect the increased involvement of volunteers in running and supporting events across the country. Also it did not take into account rising costs of travel and subsistence. The reimbursement policy also applies to staff and board.
Uploads via Wikiportret over the yearsA former admin of NLWP felt that their anonymity and privacy were threatened by two journalists and turned to WMNL for help. We managed to convince the journalists that 'doxxing' a Wikimedia-volunteer was not in the public interest and therefore not in line with official journalism standards in the Netherlands.
We continue to work closely with the volunteers running WikiPortret, the website that provides an easy upload tool for portrait photographs. In 2019, 589 images were uploaded. Of these, 387 are now in use on Wikipedia. All images uploaded over the past years can be seen here
As always, we provided volunteers with p.r.-materials, goodies and communicated their activities in newsletter and social media.

Diversity: Gendergap
Wikipedia is particularly strong in providing information on topics that are traditionally considered important by men, such as technology, sports, science and science fiction. The Gendergap working group has been trying to reduce this gap with the Wikiproject Gendergap since 2015 by describing more articles about women and women-related topics on Wikipedia and sister projects. In addition, the gender gap working group tries to motivate women to contribute to Wikipedia. The focus of the activities is on informing, raising enthusiasm and activating new editors.
Gendergap Hackathon / Wikivrouwen Tech Storm
Women tech storm
A grant we received in 2017 from a private grantmaker made it possible for us to organise a WikiWomen’s Tech Storm: an event to encourage the involvement of women and non-binary people in coding and development for the Wikimedia projects. The Hackathon had two target groups: developers with some experience programming outside Wikimedia who would like to learn Wikimedia coding. The other group consists of women and non-binary people who are already acquainted with Wikimedia projects and are interested in learning the coding side of the projects. There was a lot of interest in the event: 20 participants were selected from a total of 99 applications. Even though there were no scholarships, the event drew an international audience with 12 different nationalities.
From 10-12 May the Women Tech Storm was hosted by the Royal Library in The Hague. Five workshops were offered: Commons tools / GWT, Wikidata 101, Wikidata & SPARQL and Mediawiki. In the meantime there was time for collaborating on projects and one could take part in presentations by the collection specialists of the KB about the masterpieces of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek.
Participants and mentors
We are impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants and how they took their first steps within the Wikimedia projects. Participants automatically found each other and started collaborations or were inspired to start up new projects themselves. A small sample of the results presented at the closing session: A broken Wikidata script is working again, new queries have been created on Wikidata, editor 1Veertje has gained reinforcement in her Video-Cat-Bot project, the Sparql knowledge of a large group of participants is enlarged and a nice extra: 1 Wikipedia article was written on the Polish Wikipedia.
The first results of the evaluation among the participants have come in. Many respondents intend to continue with their acquired WikiData knowledge. What was most appreciated was the open atmosphere among the participants, the large gender diversity and the social character of this Women TechStorm.
As a follow-up, the Wiki TechStorm II was organized in the last weekend of October, again at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. While the tech storm in May was only accessible to women and non-binary participants, the Wiki Tech storm II was all-inclusive on October 26 and 27; this time men were also welcome.

Participants and cultural institutions were given the opportunity to introduce interesting ICT issues. Issues related to knowledge sharing. Give an example of an incoming issue. A total of 35 participants (with 14 different nationalities) and 15 mentors and trainers took part in the second edition of the TechStorm to share knowledge, write scripts, learn programs and understand bots.
International Women's Day
March 8 is International Women's Day. Women all over the world come together to celebrate their femininity. But also to show that equal rights and opportunities between women and men are not yet self-evident. Also in 2018 special events were organized on this day in the Netherlands in this theme:
Wikimedia Netherlands and the Swedish Embassy
The gender gap working group of Wikimedia and the Swedish Embassy joined forces on International Women's Day to focus attention on the internet gender gap - inequality between the number of men and women on the internet. The Swedish government is the first government in the world to announce a feminist foreign policy, with equal representation for men and women as one of the foundations. The gender gap working group has been working hard for several years on reducing the #Wikigap within Wikimedia projects. A unique event took place on March 8 at the residence of the Swedish Embassy in The Hague for an afternoon on Wikipedia articles about leading women in science, business, culture and politics. This event was part of an international promotion in which 40 (!) Embassies participated.
Special writing evening Wikikring Twente GenderGap
On Thursday, March 8, the Wikikring GenderGap organized a special writing evening at Hengelo Library in the context of International Women's Day. Inspiring speakers such as Marjan Berk and Karin Dijkman were present and the Mini Chronicles of Masja de Roy were shown.
The women you've never met
From 5 March to 9 April, Iberocoop organized the international writing competition The Women You Have Never With To Reduce Gender Gap. Within the Dutch-language Wikipedia, this was organized by the Gendergap project group. The aim was to write about women, women's organizations or feminist movements. Eight participants wrote a total of 160 new articles written and expanded a number of articles. A substantial growth compared to the 2017 competition.
Other gender gap events
Scrum board with completed tasks during the Amnesty International HackathonAmnesty International Wiki-a-thon #BraveEdit. On May 19 Amnesty International held on edit-a-thon, which was initiated by an international event that was launched by WMUK and Amnesty. We offered our support to the local Amnesty chapter and we are very thankful for the effort of our volunteers. They have guided the participants that were mainly new Wikipedia editors. Thanks to their help an impressive number of Wikipedia articles were created. We were impressed by the thorough preparation on the part of Amnesty International Nederland, especially the way they provided participants with ready-to-use source material, and will apply this model in our own editathons in future.
We have continued organizing our monthly meet-ups; WikiFridays (Amsterdam) and WikiSaturdays (Utrecht). It is much appreciated by our supporters, the meet ups offer a safe environment and an opportunity to work together and to get connected to like minded people. There is also a monthly Gender Gap Writing Circle at the Hengelo public library.
After all the fun and great results of the previous years, a new # 100wikiwomen challenge started for the third time on November 29th. The idea of this challenge is simple: publish 1 article per day about a woman on the wikipedia in Dutch for 100 days.
Diversity: working with new or established immigrants
Wiki goes Caribbean
From March to July 2018, UNESCO Wikipedian worked together with a number of museums in Residence Daniëlle Jansen to better map the heritage of the Netherlands' colonial past on Wikipedia. In this period the focus was on the legacy of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and Suriname. This project was supervised by UNESCO and Wikimedia Nederland.
During four weeks a course was given via skype to working groups on Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. A total of 46 people took part in this skype course.
To more accurately describe the history of Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Netherlands established a working group under the project name "Wiki Goes Caribbean". People with knowledge of (or interest in) the ABC Islands and Suriname were invited to write new articles, expand articles and / or add images together with other interested parties in the 'Wiki goes Caribbean' project group. Informative meetings were organized in the Rijksmuseum, the National Archive, the World Museum and the Royal Institute of Linguistics, Land and Ethnology. There was great enthusiasm and many decided to continue working both at home and during future Wiki goes Caribbean meetings.
Writing event about the Dutch Caribbean in the National Archives
On July 1, 2018, Daniëlle Jansen represented the 'Wiki goes Caribbean' project group at the Keti Koti festival in the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen. Keti Koti, a Surinamese concept, means "Broken Chain". It symbolizes the abolition of slavery on July 1, 1863 in the then colonies of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles.
The project group made the writing month 'Suriname and the Caribbean' on Wikipedia in September and from this month organized monthly writing afternoons under the name 'Wiki goes Caribbean' in the National Archive in The Hague. September was also an important Wikimedia month on Aruba, because in September 2018 Wiki Loves Monuments took place on Aruba for the third time. You can read more about this in the section "Wiki Loves Monuments".
How necessary diversifying the community is became clear when during the introductory meeting at the Rijksmuseum one of the audience members mentioned that she had been unpleasantly surprised by the article ‘Neger’ (Negro) on NLWP. The article was indeed so outdated in its approach and content as to be borderline racist. (It was completely rewritten within days of the event at the Rijksmuseum)
Sneak preview: to further support to development of a wikicommunity in the Dutch Caribbean, three Wikimedians will embark on a two-week wiki-tour of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao in May 2019. They will give editing trainings to beginners and more experienced editors, and work with the local GLAM and education communities.

With a lot of resources needed for Wiki Loves Caribbean, we could not put so much effort into Nederland en de wereld. Still, things happened:
Women on the Dutch-Caribbean island St Eustatius, ca 1900. Donated by the National Museum of World Cultures
Content donation Museum of World Cultures Following the Wikimedia and Caribbean Heritage seminar, which took place in October 2017, the National Museum of World Cultures made an image donation in April 2018 regarding their collection from the Caribbean. Part of that donation consists of images of objects, including musical instruments and archaeological material. The main focus of this donation is on the photographic collection. Historical photographs from the early 20th century give a picture of colonized areas, under the rule of France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The photos were taken by, among others, the famous photo studio Soublette & Fils, renowned photographers from Curaçao. Another large part is in color and made in the years 1960-1980, by photographer Boy Lawson. The then head of the Photoburo department of the Royal Tropical Institute visited many countries in the world and photographed daily life. His photos were and are being used in exhibitions, and were then also found in the children's magazine Samsam. Images have been made available of the natural vegetation, industrial activities, agriculture and architecture of the Netherlands Antilles in particular. They did this in the context of International Womens Day.
Ki Hadjar Archive Ki Hadjar Dewantara was a pioneer in the struggle for education for Indonesians. Wikimedia Indonesia has worked hard to digitize and upload its correspondence from the archive of the Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum in Yogyakarta to Wikimedia Commons. In December 2017, volunteers from Wikimedia Nederland started transcribing the contents of the letters written in Dutch and making them available via WikiSource. Because many letters were written by hand, the work was completely different from the normal Wikisource transcription process. No OCR was possible for the handwritten letters; the text had to be transcribed "manually" by three experienced Dutch WikiSource volunteers. With the help of the tools in the proofreading extension of Wikisource, the process became a lot easier. April 2018, Wikimedia Netherlands organized a meeting at the Wikimedia Netherlands office where historians, manuscripts, paleographers and wiki sourcers met to help with transcribing. The transcription process was completed in December 2018. 365 letters from the collection of the Dewantara Kirti Griya museum had been uploaded to Commons. Around 160 letters were written in Dutch and transcribed on nl.wikisource. Most of them have now also been translated into Bahasa Indonesia. The project is a good example of how Wikimedians can work together across continents to provide access to knowledge about a shared history. Thanks to this collaboration, letters written by a pioneer of education more than a century ago are now available to historians. We published a blogpost, which we shared with the international community.

We published a brochure about the ways in which the education sector can contribute to the Wikimedia projects, as part of our activities to strengthen our education programme
Utrecht University organised an open science wikisprint (#OSWikisprint) on 23 February, to improve articles on Dutch Wikipedia related to open science in general. Several new articles were created and some others were expanded. Around 8 people attended, including staff from WMNL. A second wikisprint was organised on 11 June, this time in the Royal Library in The Hague. 8 people attended.
The partnership with ITV college for translators continues, with students translating Wikipedia articles into Dutch as part of their traineeship. The programme is well-received by the community.
We organised three Wikimedia workshops at the International Institute for Social Studies (Erasmus University). Many students at ISS come from the global south. The workshops were intended to interest ISS staff, students, and PhDs for the Wikimedia movement and to tell them why it is important to contribute and/or support the movement, not only during their stay at the ISS but also afterwards during their professional careers. ISS has come to the conclusion to include Wikimedia in the academic skills program. We will develop this further in 2019.
Introductions into editing Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement were given as part of ongoing classes at Maastricht University and Radboud University.
An intern at University of Amsterdam uploaded the Atlas der Neederlanden and enriched articles related to this upload on Wikipedia and Wikidata.
Maastricht University organised a #1Lib1Ref meet-up to which 8 people attended and during which some articles on Wikipedia were enriched with references. As part of 2 courses, students either had to write a new article, or expend an existing one. In one case, students contributed individually, in the other case they worked on the articles in small groups. Topics varied from Abortion in Italy to Diary of H.M. the Shah of Persia during his tour through Europe in A.D. 1873.

Emerging partnerships
Saxion Hogeschool: a preliminary meeting to see if and how Wikimedia could be integrated into the archaeology curriculum. Results were positive; follow-up is expected in Spring 2019.
Universiteit Leiden / Campus The Hague: preliminary meeting on incorporating students' work on Wikipedia. The work has already been done; the students have signed off on it being published on Wikipedia. Follow-up includes finding out how this could be published on Wikipedia, and finding out if and how the community would support this.
The Wikimedian in Residence programme continues to lay the foundation for longer running partnerships with GLAM institutions. GLAM-Wiki coordinators are appointed at more major GLAMs after residencies have ended.
Contributing to Wikimedia projects becomes common practice in the GLAM community, also involving smaller GLAMs with specialised collections.
GLAMs develop the skills to contribute directly to the Wikimedia-projects, without assistance by volunteers or WMNL. This applies specifically to libraries and librarians, who have the potential to become Wikimedia-ambassadors to their users.
A wider group of volunteers has the necessary skills to process content donations, mass uploads etc.
In 2018, the European Year of Cultural Heritage and the Cultural Capital of Europe lead to improved content and increased involvement by the GLAM sector.

Wikipedians in Residence
Michelle van Lanschot was active as WiR at Erfgoed Gelderland (Gelderland Heritage) in 2018 and organized various projects at a number of heritage institutions in collaboration with Wikimedia Nederland. She introduced Wikimedia to Gelderland heritage institutions including the Netherlands Open Air Museum, the Africa Museum, the Kijk-en Luistermuseum and the Van 't Lindenhout Museum and convinced them of the importance of making more Gelders heritage available on Wikimedia. The "Working with Wikimedia" manual that Michelle van Lanschot has prepared for employees of heritage institutions was updated in 2018 and regularly used for workshops and courses. The manual deals with working with Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The document also pays attention to copyright and the use of Creative Commons licenses. Michelle van Lanschot is now a permanent member of staff at Erfgoed Gelderland, with GLAM-wiki affairs as part of her remit.
Wiki Scientists
In 2018, the Academic Heritage Foundation (SAE) was the first Dutch institution to hire a Wikidata specialist for the 'Wiki Scientists' project. This project started in the autumn of 2018 with the aim of including important people from the scientific history of the Netherlands since 1575 in Wikidata . To achieve this, the SAE has employed a WiR for 0.6 FTE for a period of six months. The most important task is to make the historical data of Dutch professors and leading scientists accessible Wikimedia Nederland is a member of the steering group that oversee the activities of these WiRs and was involved in organizing training courses and writing meetings.
Unesco Nederland
The Wikipedian-in-Residence program was also continued at UNESCO Netherlands in 2018. At UNESCO, emphasis is on Caribbean and Surinamese heritage. The UNESCO program laid the foundation for the "Wiki goes Caribbean" project, which from 2019 will be part of the Wikimedia Netherlands work program. This program wants to encourage active participation in Wiki projects from the Caribbean Netherlands and by the Antillean community in the Netherlands. The ultimate goal is to make more and better knowledge available through the Wikimedia projects.
UNESCO Nederland grants patronage to WikiGoesCaribbean and will thus remain involved in the activities.
GLAM knowledge seminar
We invited Dutch GLAMs to a knowledge seminar about sharing collections for reuse via Wikimedia. Three speakers shared their experiences and we provided information that answered questions like: Where do you start? What about copyright? And how do you actually upload your collection to Wikimedia? 34 participants attended this session and the overall feedback was that 71,6% of the participants were inspired to to share (parts of) the collection of their institution via one or more Wikimedia projects. In October there was a similar meeting at Tresoar in Leeuwarden, especially for institutions from the province of Friesland. There was a lot of interest among those present and Wikimedia Netherlands intends to further deepen contact with heritage institutions in 2019.

Wikimedia and Libraries
Wikimedia Nederland and the libraries find each other in their mission to make knowledge available and to learn (digital) skills. Public libraries are interesting for Wikimedia Netherland as partners with a large network of users and volunteers. That is why activities focus primarily on jointly contributing to and becoming acquainted with the various Wikimedia platforms.
National library conference
On March 20 the annual Dutch library conference, organized by the Dutch Royal Library, was held. WMNL’s Denise Jansen visited this conference. We placed an advertorial in the special congres edition of the librarians’ journal Bibliotheekblad. (page 68 of the pdf) This has lead to two potential new public library partnership.
Wiki Cafes and Wiki-circles
In 2018, the Midden-Brabant Library in Tilburg and the Hengelo Library regularly organized Wiki Cafés or Wikikringen. Cozy gatherings where everyone was welcome to participate in the largest internet encyclopedia in the world. Experienced Wikipedia editors were present to guide participants. Sometimes the meetings focused on a specific theme. For example, the "GenderGap Wikikring" in the Hengelo Library focused on writing articles about women, and the general Wikikring wrote in May about the Resistance theme. The Tilburg Center Library has started describing municipal monuments.
The libraries of Den Bosch and Rotterdam have also expressed interest in starting their own wiki-circles.
WikiMonumentRide
Library 's Hertogenbosch, together with Wikimedia Nederland, organized the WikiMonumentenRide on 12 September. Together with city guide Janny Viguurs and the men of InstaDenBosch, 15 people took part in a bicycle tour along municipal monuments in the De Muntel and 't Zand districts to take photos of the Wikimedia Commons monuments.
Grant for exploration of Wikimedia collaboration and libraries
Wikimedia Nederland received a grant of € 29,000 from the PICA Foundation to explore the possibilities for a structural collaboration between Wikimedia and the Dutch library field. This concerns all types of libraries: public, university or specialist. Wikimedia Nederland has been working with libraries for some time, but would like to expand and anchor that program. The project will continue until 2019.
Public library becomes Wiki-café
“Last year, the Midden-Brabant Library organized a" Railroad Photo Day ", in collaboration with Wikimedia Nederland, the municipality of Tilburg and a former NS employee. Special buildings could be photographed that day by both professional and amateur photographers. The aim was to translate the story of the past through images into the present and the future. During a follow-up meeting under the supervision of a Wikipediaan, images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons where they will be available to the rest of the world forever. It was a very successful project and a good example of co-creation. "

Workshop Wikidata for cultural institutions and their collections
Digital Heritage Network, Europeana and Wikimedia Nederland organized a Wikidata workshop for the heritage sector on 12 October. The workshop, in which 27 heritage professionals from all over the Netherlands participated, gave practical examples of how cultural institutions can raise the quality of their collections to a higher level by linking with Wikidata. The workshop was a pilot for Europeana, who will repeat the formula in other countries.

On the other hand, as someone working in a Museum, I am trying to give all these opportunities a place: how are we going to implement this in our institution? What does it mean for our collections? Will data from Wikidata flow back into our own Collection System? I feel like I want to learn more about how the semantic web that can feed into our own collections and processes. ”

Public Domain Day: symposium and writing call
1 January is Public Domain Day, which "celebrates" the creative works that have entered the public domain because their authors died over 70 years ago. Wikimedia Nederland sponsored a small symposium on this matter, together with Kennisland, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Creative Commons and Circular Content. The symposium was attended by ~60 people. Website with program here. Together with the symposium, a call was launched on Dutch Wikipedia to write about the authors and their works. Page here. This writing week was somewhat experimental in its setup; due to other writing weeks in this period, and due to the short notice on which it was organised, only limited results were expected and indeed only 1 editor participated. Stating the obvious: we need to be review whether this is the right activity for Public domain day.
#1Lib1Ref
The annual #1Lib1Ref campaign ran from 15 January to 3 february 2018. Compared to 2017, a number of changes were made: citation hunt became available for Dutch WP and was integrated into the 1Lib1Ref workflow. The project pages on Meta were simplified - no links to separate pages and everything you need right there on the landing page. Instructions were updated to allow participants to add citations in the visual editor. Focus was shifted slightly from librarians toward university students and staff. Results were still relatively low, but improving when compared to 2017: 20 different users made 36 revisions to 34 pages, although not all of these edits seem to have been constructive edits. When setting the annual plan for 2019, we will decide whether an increase in involvement is to be expected. If not, we will consider abandoning the project.
Leeuwarden-Fryslân Cultural Capital 2018.
Leeuwarden (the capital city of the Dutch Province Friesland) is European Capital of Culture in 2018. Many cultural activities take place during the year. WMNL wants to celebrate this and we will take the opportunity to organise an online and offline Wikipedia-event about Friesland and Leeuwarden. We have had our first brainstorm on these events and we have reached out to our community for help, ideas and suggestions. Regional archive Tresoar will host this event.

From 25 February to 11 March 2018, WMNL together with NOVA (Dutch Research School for Astronomy) organised the Astroschrijfweek, a double writing week on astronomy on the Dutch Wikipedia. Under the #Astroschrijfweek hashtag, editors were invited to improve astronomy related content. NOVA kindly made available a number of small prizes, which were raffled among the participating editors. We had a cross-over with the Gender gap project, in that articles related to both astronomy and the gender gap project (e.g. female astronomers) were eligible for a special prize. In total, 185 articles were improved by 15 different editors. This was the first writing event focusing on one of the natural sciences, proving that even such specialised subjects can inspire editing, although on a more limited scale than with other topics.
Year of Resistance
The Platform for the Remembrance of the Second World War (Platform WO2) declared 2018 the theme year 'Year of Resistance'. During this year, attention will be paid to the role of the resistance throughout the Netherlands.
We received a small grant to develop activities on the Wikimedia projects. May was Wikipedia 'Month of Resistance'. Editors were encouraged to improve articles on the theme of resistance during this month. We will continue with similar activities later in the year, focussing on the war in Asia and resistance newspapers.
Images sprint Gelders Erfgoed
In 2017, Rozet Heritage Center from Arnhem participated in a Wikimedia project of Heritage Gelderland with the aim making Gelders heritage available for use on Wikipedia. As part of this project, the Heritage Center made its engravings of famous people (including Roman Emperors) and Arnhem and Gelderland country estates (such as Bronbeek and Middachten Castle) available via Wikimedia Commons. As a next step, a print of images was organized from 5 to 18 November 2018 to give these engravings a place in relevant Wikipedia articles, in as many language versions as possible. In this way, the Arnhems heritage also became internationally visible. It is striking that no fewer than 88,642 pages on Wikipedia (and other Wikimedia sites) with images from the Rozet Heritage Center collection were viewed in November 2018, compared to 13,398 in October 2018.
Friesland Writing Week
From 1 to 14 October, Wikimedia Netherlands organized writing weeks about Friesland on Wikipedia. During these 2 weeks everyone was encouraged to write or improve articles on the Friesland theme. It led to a total of 44 new and / or improved articles.
Content donations
World War II: resistance and collaboration

Wikimedia Nederland is part of the Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen (Network War Sources), which aims to improve access to sources related to World War II. It is not often that footage from the Second World War is published in the public domain or with an open license. There is not a lot of original footage from 1940-1945, and works from this period are still copyrighted. Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen believes the reuse of war sources is important and has committed itself to collecting and making available rights-free WO2 material. The platform in particular wants to contribute to Wikimedia Commons.
Photographer Menno Huizinga uniquely captured The Hague in the Second World War. Nearly eight hundred photographs of his hand (many taken clandestinely, at great risk to himself) form the largest part of a content donation by our partner NIOD. Huizinga captured poignant images of the hunger winter in The Hague, the demolition of houses for the construction of the Atlantik Wall and fleeing collaborators.

Our partner Beeld en Geluid donated the collections of the Film and Photo Service of the NSB (the Dutch movement of Nazi-collaborators). Some six hundred propaganda photographs and 170 films have been marked as public domain. The appeal of the NSB - in 1943 the movement counted 100,000 members - is an underexposed theme in historiography that has only been given more attention in recent years. Because this material is still controversial Beeld en Geluid organised a seminar about the context of the images, which was attended by several Wikipedians.
Furthermore, dozens of photographed WO2 objects have been published on Wikimedia Commons. Like the glasses resistance fighter Hannie Schaft used to disguise herself, a camera with which German V2 missiles were secretly recorded, and a capitulation flag used in Rotterdam.
Texts about Dutch philosophy free for reuse
The Royal Library (KB) recently made a large part of the texts on Dutch philosophy suitable for reuse on its website. With the release under CC-BY 4.0, the KB wants to make it easier to write articles about Dutch philosophers, or to improve existing ones, without the danger of copyvio. In the past there was sometimes discussion about copyright violations when texts from the KB were too literally copied on Wikipedia. Through the free license, the KB wants to prevent this kind of ambiguity from now on. In the future the KB hopes to be able to release other encyclopaedic parts of its website.
Dictionary argot released for Wiktionary
At the last Wikimedia Conference in the Netherlands in November 2017, the writer and publisher of the "Dictionary Popular French - Dutch", Berry van de Wouw, attended the session on Wiktionary. In a conversation afterwards he came up with the proposal to donate the contents of this dictionary, some 5,000 lemmas and 30 illustrations by Ronald Kronenburg, to Wiktionary. It is a solid collection of contemporary French spoken language (argot) with a large number of example sentences and the meaning in Dutch.
The second edition of the dictionary with a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license is available on Wikimedia Commons. In total, 4847 Wikitionary lemmas were improved. See the project page on Wiktionary
After the donation of the dictionary on Jiddish and Hebrew words in use in Dutch in 2013, this is the second major donation of lemmas to Wiktionary. The Dutch-language wiktionary included about 640,000 pages at the beginning of 2018. More information about this project can be found on the project page on Wiktionary.
3000 images from Regionaal Archief Nijmegen
The Regionaal Archief Nijmegen, one of the participating institutions in the 2017 project A Wikimedian in Residence in Gelderland, donated some 3500 images to Wikimedia Commons. The upload was done with Pattypan, using the latest release that makes it possible to upload images from a web URL. The images document the history of the city of Nijmegen and span the last ~100 years. The collection can be accessed here.

The collaboration with the Netherlands Institute of Military History has led to the uploading of nearly 2,000 historical aerial photos to Wikimedia Commons in 2018. Thanks to all these images, a more complete overview has emerged of what the Netherlands looked like from above in the 1920s and '30s. After uploading to Commons, Wikimedia volunteers have made many improvements to the metadata. Incorrect information has been corrected and missing information has been added.

Desired change (outcome)
The thematic topics nature and health function as a focal point for activities of GLAM and education partners, volunteers and editors, leading to substantial increase in content on Wikimedia projects. Ultimately this results in self-sustaining processes of content donation and content processing requiring only minimal support from WMNL.

The project nature working group has taken some time out to regroup and rethink. Some active members left the group and there was frustration at the lack of clear progress. As a result there were fewer activities in 2018.
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek donated a series of miniatures from a medieval manuscript on nature. In september the group organised a photoworkshop in the Leiden botanical garden, 191 images were uploaded. The nature group also cooperated with the conservation NGO SoortenNL in organising a photo-competition. The results will be known in 2019.
Plans to explore the possibility to set up a project around the theme 'health' did not get off the ground, as the volunteers who had shown interest were unable to take up the initiative due to unforeseen circumstances.

Lobby and Public Affairs
Since 2013, a number of national Wikimedia organizations have been working together in the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU (FKAGEU). The aim of the cooperation is to stand up for free knowledge and to make the voice of the Wikimedia movement heard within the European Commission and the European Parliament. Wikimedia Nederland is part of this group and contributes through financial support, providing substantive input and where necessary developing activities in the Netherlands to strengthen Brussels lobby by the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU.
Dimitar Dimitrov, the coordinator of the FKAGEU, was present at the WikiZaterdag in Utrecht on 9 June. He told about the work of the group and the state of affairs regarding important issues such as copyright reform. Eleven people attended this meeting at the Wikimedia Netherlands office and it led to the establishment of a new volunteer group who will become involved in lobby work.
The brochures that the FKAGEU has developed, including the Freedom of Panorama Brochure and "Text and Data Mining Brochure, have repeatedly brought Wikimedia Nederland to the attention of its newsletter readers and followers on social media in 2018.
EU copyright reform
2018 was a crucial year for EU copyright reform. The European Parliament voted three times on the proposal "Copyright Directive in a Digital Single Market". In consultation with the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU (FKAGEU), office and volunteers from Wikimedia Nederland have been intensively lobbying to influence a favorable outcome of the vote. Via the Association wiki, the WMNL website, twitter and facebook and website, we asked for attention to be paid to the votes and shared our position. We supported the FKAGEU and the Wikimedia Foundatipn in their lobbying activities by translating texts into Dutch and facilitated that two Dutch Wikimedians could be present at an event in the European Parliament organized by FKAGEU. Together with Kennisland, we have sent a lobby letter to Dutch MEPs
Presentations and lectures
VOGIN IP congres. Wikimedian Maarten Dammers gave a presentation during the VOGIN-IP conference for professionals in the field of information retrieval. The subject of his talk was Wikidata.
Wikimedia Nederland staff, board members and volunteers presented at the Vakconferentie Wetenschapscommunicatie 2018 (Conference for Science Communication Professionals) at Wageningen University on April 16. The theme of the conference was 'Confidence in science communication'. In a series of mini-presentations we addressed how Wikipedia guarantees the quality and reliability of its content, and what tools exist to assess the quality and reliability of Wikipedia. In addition, researchers talked about how they use Wikimedia projects for their own research and how they assess the 'encyclopedia' written by the public.
During the Dutch Adlib User Group Spring Meeting (26 April), WMNL presented the case that sharing collections through Wikimedia means sharing collections with the world. The audience consisted of GLAM professionals and (again) expressed an interest in some kind of "upload to Wikimedia" button inside Adlib. Around 100 people attended this meeting.
Wikimedia Nederland presented 2 lectures during the Open Up symposium (19 January), the final meeting of 2017’s Wikimedian in Residence project with Erfgoed Gelderland.
