Metrics edit

Figures before the slash are outcomes, those after the slash are targets. Figures in brackets correspond to results with international Wiki Loves Earth.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of participants 2507 (17,446) / 840 (3500) 1453 (Outreach & Partnerships) + 1052 (15,991) (Thematic Content) + 79 (Community Support) - 3% discount for multi-project participants

This and all three following metrics significantly exceeded in its international part owing to a very significant success of Wiki Loves Earth in some countries. A few countries (notably India, Pakistan, Brazil and Germany) had very significant success at Wiki Loves Earth, giving over 8,000 photos each and with over 1000 participants each. This success is only partially owing to our efforts, but mostly owing to work of local organisers.

Apart of this we significantly exceeded expectations owing to a very successful Wikimarathon with events in regions helping to involve a significant number of users, both new and returning experienced ones. In the second half of the year, we had a number of successful workshops in Eastern Ukraine (targeting Donetsk and Luhansk regions) and successful GLAM and education outreach initiatives.

2. # of newly registered 1094 (14,796) / 365 (1390) 469 (Outreach & Partnerships) + 625 (14,327) (Thematic Content)

Target exceeded, primarily owing to the success of Wikimarathon and to good results of the Education Programme

3. # content pages 61,540 (178,375) / 47,500 (117,390) 3250 (Outreach & Partnerships) + 57,622 (174,457) (Thematic Content) + 668 (Community Support)

Target exceeded. On one hand, the biggest numeric impact is from Wiki Loves Monuments with one more year above 35K images uploaded, on the other hand, many other activities were above target but with a smaller impact on the overall result: Wiki Loves Earth Ukraine (highest upload count ever), Wikimarathon (activity exceeding expectations), Wiki Science Competition (65% increase in uploads) and Women in Red (442 new and 42 improved articles).

4. # of media files used 4,236 (12,999) / 6,400 (12,940) 122 (Outreach & Partnerships) + 3,785 (12,548) (Thematic Content) + 329 (Community Support)

Right on target internationally, below target nationally. The major reason is that we did not organise contests, edit-a-thons or campaigns targeting cultural or natural heritage, meaning that too many WLM and WLE photos remain unused.

5. Geographic diversity 23 / 15 22 (Outreach & Partnerships) + 11 (Thematic Content) + 2 (Community Support)

Only four regions were not covered by events in 2017: Crimea and Sevastopol (occupation, although we had events for IDPs from the region), Chernivtsi and Zaporizhia Oblasts (both having too few active local Wikimedians). Most of the regions covered had multiple events, with Wikimarathon being particularly successful in increasing regional coverage.

Report on Program Outreach & Partnerships edit

Developing and supporting partnerships, involving new users and getting high-quality content

Wikipedia Education Programme & Wikiworkshops

Round Table for Teachers to work on a guide and resource book for teachers about editing and applying Wikimedia projects in education

Wikiworkshop in Shchastia, Luhansk Oblast (Eastern Ukraine), a city just a few kilometers from the front line

Objectives & Comments edit

  • engage more educators by organising four two-day trainings and 10 small two-hours wiki-workshops, pre-choosing their participants according to their expressed plans
Done Answering requests from regional institutions, we held 3 two-days trainings and 4 one-day trainings (Mykolaiv, Shostka, Poltava, Kropyvnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk) for educators using the scheme approbated in 2016. 125 participants took part in the trainings, most of them being high school teachers. As for smaller wikiworkshops (lasting 2 to 6 hours), there were ~15 of them. We help members of community to become presenters and workshop organisers, including Wikipedians who are not members of WMUA. Among those who held trainings by themselves this year were participants of similar last year events.
  • continue the particular focus on under-represented regions, such as Southern and Eastern Ukraine, by organising at least one such training there
Done Owing to dedicated volunteer Ліонкінг, who continued and developed 2015 Wikifest:Luhanshchyna article writing collaboration into long lasting project of repetitive wikiworkshops, there were 7 wikiworkshops in populated places of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts (eastern Ukraine) in 2017: 1 during the Wikimarathon in January, 4 for secondary school students in October, 2 more in university libraries.
As for southern part of Ukraine, Wikiconference 2017 was held in Kherson which draw attention of local media to Wikipedia. Also, Kherson city library offers its visitors tutorship in editing Wikipedia.
  • strengthen our relationships with higher education institutions by collaborating with 5 universities within 2 classes in each during the period
Partly done Our relationships with universities stayed the same in 2017, several volunteers being each an ambassador for their alma-mater.
Yury Bulka added Wikipedia-based activity to academic courses at Lysenko National Music Academy, namely writing Wikipedia articles as a part of сoursework in spring semester of Modern musical notation (course page) and Еlectronic and computer music (course page).
Dmytro Vlasenko in the Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics continues engaging students in creating articles on computer science topics (course page).
Andriy Hrytsenko organised a practical course for students of Oleksandr Dovzhenko Hlukhiv National Paedagogical University (course page).
Oleh Kushch, was a trainer and reviewer in a course at lyceum that belongs to Kremenchuk pedagogical college (course page) — even though it is not a higher education institution, the course was two semesters long and resulted into 249 created articles.
  • continue responding to the need of Ukrainian society in knowledge of Wikimedia by holding at least 5 Wikiworkshops for those who ask
Done We are pleased to note, that requests for giving a wikiworkshop continue to come, and lots of events were held as an answer to them: including workshops for students (requests coming from students themselves), librarians (as a part of OpenAccess Week, and as a separate event), women activists, etc. Workshops are listed on wmua-wiki page.
  • continue promoting the programme by giving presentations of innovative uses of Wikipedia and related projects in communities of teaching, learning (educational conferences and fairs)'
Done Wikimedian trainers were invited to give presentations about Wikipedia Education Programme at several events for educators by other organisations: mini-EdCamps in Hlukhiv and Cherkasy, conference for teachers coordinating the National Geography Olympiad in Kropyvnytskyi, and JAMMglish City Camp (children camp, with 15 teachers and 60 upper secondary school students).

Featured activities

Education programme volunteers compiled a guide and resource book for teachers about editing and applying Wikimedia projects in education (something like Wikipedia in Class - Teachers Guide by Wikimedia Israel). This initiative is driven by Valentyna Kodola and participants of our first training for educators we conducted in 2016 (mainly humanities teachers), who came with an idea to publish a guide with lesson plans and ideas. Second 'round table' was organized in July 2017 to finalize the structure of the guide and discuss its content. Eight authors submitted their personal findings in Wikipedia Education programme, and as of December 2017 the guide book is on the stage of working out the layout.

GLAM (БоГеМА)

Objectives & Comments edit

Wiki Loves Monuments pictures illustrate a 25 volume edition about towns of Ukraine

An example of the attribution
  • improve and support the participation of cultural institutions in WMUA-GLAM activities
Done Our community partnered mainly with libraries and museums in 2017. GLAMs were engaged in projects aimed at sharing knowledge rather than sharing digital collections. This included hosting editing events, asking for trainings during Open Access Week, promoting Wikimedia online events, hosting traveling photo exhibition, redistributing content donated by photography contest participants.
  • 6 museums, 3 libraries, 1 cultural center and 1 municipal administration hosted WLM&WLE Winning Photos Exhibition. All in all it covered 12 cities and towns
  • 20 Libraries hosted wikimeetups during all-out Wikimarathon (January, 28-31) in 16 cities, towns, and smaller settlements
  • media content releases were supported from the Zaturtsi Museum (Volyn Oblast, Western Ukraine) which houses a small collection of personalia associated with Vyacheslav Lypynskyi, one of the most prominent Ukrainian politicians of early 20th century, the National Sanctuary “Sophia of Kyiv” which donated a series of images of the Genoese Fortress in Sudak (Crimea) and Maksymovych Scientific Library donated books in Ukrainian and illustrations.
  • improve the content of Wikimedia projects by increasing the participation of the GLAM institutions
Done We haven't established clear expectations about how GLAM staff participates in projects. In 2017 we continued teaching how to contribute to Wikimedia projects at in-person events. In 2017 wikitrainings for librarians were held during Wikimarathon and one-day trainings were organized for Rivne Library, Kharkiv Library, Pokrovsk Library. We observed that professional GLAMers participate in our online companies, article contests and photo contests. An apt example is staff worker of Dnipro Museum which has 9 subdivisions. He took part in Wikimarathon and after that continued proactively create and improve articles about museums he is affiliated with and famous local personalities. He contacted volunteers to help with understanding remarks of other Wikipedians and articles organization. While communicating wikimedians gave rise to the idea that the article about museum should be promoted to good and that Creative Commons licenses can be applied to the museum site. In November the article about the historical museum was promoted and became good on Ukrainian Wikipedia. Museum thanked all Wikipedians that improved the article on its site, which by that time went under CC, and announced the need for volunteers to translate the article into other languages. Authors of the translation were promised to get free museum entrance all next year round or books if they are not from the Dnipro city. Announcement effected in creating two more language versions by now.
  • increase the awareness of the program within professional communities
Done A total 4 Wikimedians made GLAM-oriented talks about Wikiprojects. These were during a special visit to the National History and Ethnography Reserve “Pereyaslav” (Kyiv Oblast), at the Conference “Science Communication in Digital Age” (Kyiv), Summer School for GLAMers 'Digitized Heritage' (Odesa), meeting at Vernadsky Library (Kyiv).

Featured activities

In November we observed finalization of the partnership case that hasn't yet been observed by us in WIKI-GLAM activity. On November 16-17, a presentation of a 25-volume bibliographic index about towns of Ukraine took place in Zabolotnoho State Scientific Architecture and Construction Library in Kyiv. The publishing of this edition was the result of the library's project started in 2008. Each volume consists of the lists of sources and publications about small cities (with population up to 500 000) of each region (oblast) of Ukraine and also historical notes about those cities. Wikimedia Ukraine has helped the library to select the pictures of the cultural monuments from the Wiki Loves Monuments contests in Ukraine and helped to attribute the authors and correctly mention the info needed (the link, author, license). Six years of WLM running in Ukraine gave thousands of photos to Wikimedia Commons, so Ilya made a program to create a gallery of monuments from a specific towns with all monuments and all pictures with the IDs from those towns, so the library could choose the pictures they wanted. Then he had to create a simple program to convert long (as the file names are usually in Cyrillic) links to the chosen files into short links. This cooperation between the library and Wikimedia Ukraine has been going on for almost a year. All in all 963 pictures from the photo contest were used to illustrate the bibliographic index. The books are distributed among the libraries of Ukraine and a part of them are also available for purchase. The library plans to publish these books also on their website, so they can be used even more widely.

Promoting Wikimedia and Free licenses

Objectives & Comments edit

  • Provide easily readable and accurate information about Wikipedia and projects
Done This objective was reached by further developing the use of social media and WMUA blogs. The number of followers on WMUA Facebook page increased by 33% (from 1813 to 2426 by December, 31th), Wiki Loves Earth Ukraine page got +23% and Wiki Loves Monuments page had a 13% increase. WMUA Twitter account indicates +180 followers increase. We also observe constant growing of Ukrainian Wikipedia Facebook page likes. By the end of 2017, it reached 21 000 followers. Though Wikimedia Ukraine is not formally responsible for it, wikimedians make content for it and it is also a channel for promoting Wikimedia Ukraine's activities.
Wikimedia Ukraine blog continued to be a platform for announcing and reporting about the activities, space for volunteers to share their stories and experiences. 82 posts were contributed by a total of 22 wikimedians (including two Project Managers that contributed more than others). The blog got 43,000 views in 2017. Three more self-standing blogs were administrated by staff and volunteers: Wiki Loves Monuments in Ukraine, ua Wiki Loves Earth in Ukraine and Wiki Loves Earth (international).
Thus the set objective of developing the use of social media and WMUA blogs resulting in increasing followers and subscribers by 10% was reached.

Instead of producing and publishing 4 infographic (1 in each quarter) for mass distribution as hoped for, we managed to compile one infographic dedicated to Ukrainian Wikipedia 13th Anniversary (file), adapt fact sheet Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 to Wiki Loves Monuments Ukraine 2017 photocontest (file) and Wiki Loves Monuments. How to participate visual for web (file).
  • Increase the number of skilled and pro-Wikipedia journalists
Not done Wikimedia Ukraine didn't execute any training for the journalists on reusing Wikimedia content.

Report on Program Thematic Content edit

Bringing new content and new editors into Wikiprojects

Article Contests

Objectives & Comments edit

Women in Red cup
  • Increase participation and the quality and quantity of coverage on Wikimedia by organising 4 article contests
Partly done There were only two contests with the point-based system and a team of judges: CEE Spring 2017 and VeloMonth in Wikipedia. But this is accompanied by 9 thematic weeks and months in Wikipedia that obtained different level of support from WMUA. Driven by individual community members (often wikimedians) and having automated scoring mostly, thematic months proved to be good models for filling the content gap, motivate existing editors and bring new. So we tend to consider them in this program too. We have created a page for applications requesting support of thematic weeks or months, where we discuss the details with the community members.
  • Increasing the participation of experts in contests
Not done but tried to. The contests were around broad topics, thus we were not particularly concentrated on involving experts. We contacted cycling associations for VeloMonth but we got very limited contributions from their members (just a few articles of average size).
  • Increasing the quality of coverage
Not done We have not held any quality articles contests this year, but we have tried to award authors of good/featured articles created during contests/thematic weeks&months.
  • Introduce contests into other Wikimedia projects except for Wikipedia
Partly done Initiative to run article contest in Wikivoyage was discussed in 2017 but was postponed for the beginning of 2018 (and started on February 1st, 2018).

Featured activities

From November 15th till December 15th, the first ever edition of a thematic month on creating articles about women had been running in Ukrainian Wikipedia. 442 articles created, 42 articles improved, 53 people took part (results page). On October 16th, the Ukrainian Wikipedia had 13,69% of female biographies (18120 articles), at the end of the thematic month: 13,78% (19397 articles). Volunteers have created a design for a cup and Wikimedia Ukraine provided the cups to the most active contributors during the thematic month. The initiative was fostered by a group of wikipedians and originated from same topic session during Ukrainian Wikiconference in Kherson.

Report on Program Photo Contests (International and local parts) edit

Photo Contests

A feral buffalo in Indonesia, 4th prize in Wiki Loves Earth international. Indonesia took part in WLE for the first time this year

Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth exhibition in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast

Objectives & Comments edit

  • increase photo content quality on Wikimedia projects by organising photo contests: Wiki Loves Earth (national and international parts), Wiki Loves Monuments (national part) and Science Photo Competition in 2017
Done This subprogram was a key activity for Wikimedia Ukraine in past fiscal years, during which we organized the Wiki Loves Monuments and Wikipedia Loves Earth and other contests. The objective to run three contests was met, using to maximum advantage the best practices developed by online contests.
  • Wiki Loves Earth Ukraine and Wiki Loves Earth International have brought satisfying results as mentioned in progress report.
  • Wiki Loves Monuments Ukraine had its 6th round in September. There were participants who took part every year and there were newbies. Ukraine again resulted in the highest number of uploads among 52 countries and participating territories. Changes were brought to contest score system aimed to motivate participants to picture sites not pictured for wikiprojects before. At present in Ukraine there are official records for more than 140,000 objects of cultural heritage. Recognition system and accounting framework are still not as transparent and accessible as should be. The online database is not organized by state authorities and Wiki Loves Monuments lists continue to be the most representative and updated database for the monuments in Ukraine, notwithstanding that it is not fully filled (81,448 items). A total 200,000 images of 27,000 cultural objects (that is near 37% of monuments listed on Wiki Loves Monuments project) were pictured by participants of WLM contests in 2013-2017.
  • Science Photo Competition was held in Ukraine in 2017 for the third time. 120 participants took part in the Ukrainian-specific section of the Wiki Science Contest, uploading 1,035 images, most were uploaded into the living organisms category. The total made Ukraine the third-largest contributing country in the international part of the contest, ahead of sixty other countries and behind only the United States and Russia. Wikimedia Ukraine organised the photo contest, in partnership with Days of Science, My Science, and the non-profit Unia Scientifica, which helped to reach academic audiences and researchers. The contest jury was comprised of five experts in their fields. Winning images on Wikimedia blog.
  • encourage participants to nominate their photos for valued, quality or featured
Partly done We have not specifically encouraged participants to nominate their photos for valued, quality or featured beyond blog and social media. When they had questions, we referred them to the detailed blog posts about how to proceed with this: How to choose valued, quality and featured pictures (Wiki Loves Earth), What to do with your images after the contest (Wiki Loves Monuments). Only a minority of participants actually did this, however.
  • ensure photo contest content is used to illustrate Wikimedia projects through organising an on-wiki collaboration or edit-a-thons.
Not done We have not organised any specific on-wiki collaborations or edit-a-thons for this, but we encouraged our participants to illustrate the articles.
  • increase the reach of the contests we plan to organise local promotional events (edit-a-thons, Wiki Takes, etc)
Done This year we have organised 11 photo exhibitions in different regions of Ukraine, particularly with GLAM institutions.

Wikiexpeditions

Wooden church in Kulakivtsi, Ternopil Oblast, a cultural heritage monument that was pictured for the first time for Wikimedia projects during a Wikiexpedition

Objectives & Comments edit

  • promoting the project on social networks once a month, resulting in 15 applications through a google form or WMUA wiki and 10 mentions in media
Partly done During the reporting period, we got 6 applications to support Wikiexpeditions, all of them were considered as worthy and accepted. They were from one to five-day long and having 1-6 participants (15 in total). Proposals focused on closing content gaps identified by participants. Two wikiexpeditions were led by users with little or no experience in editing Wikipedia and understanding of its principles. The goal was not met due to the lack of promotion and high-intensity coordinating activities before and after wikiexpedition.
  • making information and help pages for applicants and participants simpler and welcoming with helpful and friendly links by February 2017
Not done We have not improved the help pages much. Rather we had longer and more detailed discussions about the planned trip on-wiki.
  • improve the content of Wikimedia projects by increasing content on locally-oriented topics
Done Wikiexpeditions covered rural communities and sparsely-inhabited places: the Carpathian Mountains, ancient hill fort sites in Kyiv Oblast, villages of Ternopil Oblast, 19th-century manors in Sumy and Kyiv oblasts. Specific targets on new images and images used in wikiprojects were met even with the less number of expeditions than expected. Participants uploaded 1132 images and 940 were used in wikiprojects by the end of the year.

Featured activities

Supporting two automobile wikiexpeditions aimed at photographing all wooden churches in Ternopil Oblast. The idea was not spontaneous. Applicants are the volunteers of the project Wooden Churches of Ukraine — online non-commercial catalog of wooden churches and were looking for sponsorship to continue enriching the project with photos of churches in historic Galicia (lies within the modern regions of western Ukraine). A team of two (photographer and driver) completed two three-days expeditions in Spring and late Autumn, covered more than 3160 km in total and photographed more than 150 wooden churches of unique styles and forms specific to the Ternopil region. Along with churches participants contributed photos of rural settlements.

Report on Program Community Support edit

Supporting wide range of volunteer initiatives and increasing community participation

Group photo of WikiConference in Kherson

Objectives & Comments edit

  • Expand the group of editors applying for support provided by Wikimedia Ukraine and proactively contact community members who might benefit from such support:
Partly done The advertising was not done regularly, but we have expanded group of editors applying for the support of thematic weeks&months, accreditations, scholarships, attending events etc.
  • Increase support provided to the community
Partly done Scholarships were provided for 5 international events. About half of users receiving WMUA support this year never received it before.
  • Increase community participation
Done Wikiconference in Kherson was attended by 46 people (13 people has attended for the first time). The General Meeting was attended by 27 people.
  • Empower users with the techniques and skills that needed for WMUA projects
Partly done We have included trainings for volunteers during Wikiconference 2017, a board member has attended a training for board members during WMCON 2017.
  • Providing incentives to the community, supporting a wide range of volunteer initiatives with the materials and souvenirs they can use
Done WMUA has a Microgrant program for providing books for volunteers, attending events as a photographer etc (Мікрогранти). Also volunteers can ask for support with souvenirs (as giveaways during events, educational materials etc) and equipment (volunteers can borrow our projector&screen, camera)

Featured activities

This year we have concentrate on creating and running the first editing community survey, in order to better understand the needs of our community members and develop WMUA's strategy. We started working on it in 2016 by studying the examples from other communities: Опитування спільноти. We have finalised the survey only during the Wikiconference in Kherson. We have dedicated one session to discussing the survey and asking for the feedback from the participants. After that we have shown the draft of the survey to Wikimedia Foundation to get the feedback. The next steps were to have it in Qualtrics, to apply for a CentralNotice on Meta, to have our banner set up and to run the survey. Unfortunately we were not able to run the survey in 2017, so the start date was February 6, 2018.

Spending edit
