Grants:APG/Proposals/2013-2014 round1/Wikimedia Argentina/Progress report form/Q3
Purpose of the report
editThis form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.
Global metrics overview - all programs
editWe are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Global Metrics. We understand not all Global Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and
- Next to each required metric, list the outcome achieved for all of your programs included in your proposal.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome.
- In addition to the Global Metrics as measures of success for your programs, there is another table format in which you may report on any OTHER relevant measures of your programs success
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Telling your program stories - all programs
editPlease tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.
- We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
- Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
- We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
- We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
- You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Resources
editResources to plan for measurement
edit- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.

Overview of this quarter
editThe purpose of this section is to provide a brief overview of this report. Please use no more than 1-2 paragraphs to address the questions outlined below. You will have an opportunity to address these questions in detail elsewhere in this report.
CHANGES: Please describe how you changed your plans and budget based on the FDC allocation approved by the Board in December 2012, and your rationale for these changes. You can then use the changed plans and budget as the basis on which to report back on the first quarter.
- The budget of Wikimedia Argentina (WMAR) has been affected by the realization of 2014 Iberoconf. Wikimedia Argentina is home to the annual meeting of the chapters that are part of Iberocoop, Iberoconf, which accounts for the movement's annual key space to meet, set goals and organize together -between the chapters and groups of users that are part of the network- the needed work.
- At budget level, Wikimedia Argentina has taken over all local costs, including hotels for participants - two representatives from each chapter and groups of users- and welcome and closing dinners, catering for three days, travel insurance, maintenance of the venue during the event, daily transportation, etc. Similarly, although we have done a big effort budget-wise, Wikimedia Argentina has been able to succesfully adjust each of its outstanding activities for the rest of the year, so that, together with the collaboration of our partners, the estimated budget for the completion of each of the planned activities will not be affected.
HIGHLIGHTS: What were 1–2 important highlights of the past quarter? (These may include successes, challenges, lessons learned.)
- Online Course Wikimedia Argentina-RELPE: In mid-September, together with RELPE (Latin American Network of Educational Portals), Wikimedia Argentina launched its first online course entirely aimed at educational references of Latin America course. 'Bridging the school, digital and free cultures' is the result of months of work in order to bring to the school community an online course that covers topics such as free culture, use of Wikipedia and the other projects as editors and as teaching resources.
- Now and entering the 4th week of the course, we are working with 100 teachers from across the region - including Bolivia, Peru, Honduras and Panama and an extensive representation of Argentine teachers.
- In this sense, despite having started as a pilot test, we can understand, given the degree of involvement of the participants in the course, that Wikimedia Argentina has been a response to an existing need within the educational environment, shortening the distances through an open and free platform that allows the participation of all the Spanish speaking world.
- Competition Wikimedia Argentina-RED PEA Unesco: Wikimedia Argentina, together with UNESCO, launched a photo and editing contest: Traveling across the heritage of our country ([1]) With a dual purpose, first make students become partakers of the Wikimedia projects beyond schools in Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires, and on the other hand, encourage the preservation of cultural heritage sites and position the places where they live within the Wikivoyage project through their involvement in the issues. In this sense, although we knew it was an ambitious project for the age range that we aimed for- the younger group is 7 [seven] years in average- we have adapted through specific editing templates for the contest, different templates that make the process easier. In the future, Wikimini tools will be very useful for our organization when designing projects for the younger students.
WIKI-FOCUS: What Wikimedia projects was your entity focused on (e.g., Wiki Commons, French Wiktionary) this quarter?
- Wikimedia Argentina focuses its work on the following projects: Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikivoyage. Also, thanks to the completion of the online course, participants are approaching their interests according to the various Wikimedia projects, apart from those named.
GROWTH: How did your entity grow over the past quarter vs. the previous quarter (e.g., Number of active editors reached/involved/added, number of articles created, number of events held, number of partipants reached through workshops)?
- Comparing to Q2, the results for the Q3 are the following:
Q2 | Q3 | |
Number of participants | 80 | 164 |
Number of activities | 4 | 9 |
Number of documents uploaded | 203 | 1732 |
Number of pictures uploaded | 203 | 1411 |
Number of new editors | 10 | 70 |
Number of new articles | 12 | 7 |
Number of people reached | 60 | 350 |
Financial summary
editThe FDC requires information about how your entity received and spent money over the past year. The FDC distributes general funds, so your entity is not required to use funds exactly as outlined in the proposal. While line-item expenses will not be examined, the FDC and movement wants to understand why the entity spent money in the way it did. If variance in budgeted vs. actual is greater than 20%, please provide explanation in more detail. This helps the FDC understand the rationale behind any significant changes. Note that any changes from the Grant proposal, among other things, must be consistent with the WMF mission, must be for charitable purposes as defined in the grant agreement, must be reported to WMF, and must otherwise comply with the grant agreement. The WMF mission is "to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally."

We understand that some metrics may not be applicable in this quarterly report, so please add metrics here if they are applicable.
*In the past, the FDC has used the term 'initiative', but we are using the term 'program.'
- What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
According to the planification developed for the year 2013-2014, the main goals regarding the educational program are:
- Continue and strengthen the relationship with institutions that have signed agreements with us (National University of Córdoba) and sign new ones with other schools, universities or provincial departments of Education, for the realization of workshops, presentations, courses and other activities.
- Re-start the design of an Education General Plan that was stalled in 2013 and progress its implementation.
- And the main activities associated with this program for 2013-2014 are:
- Contracting a new officer to design and implement the Education General Plan and be in charge of Education activities of the Association.
- Publication of General Education Plan, using discussions held in 2013.
- Design and publication of document "Wikipedia in the University" dedicated exclusively to activities in higher education.
- Translation of materials produced by Wikimedia Foundation for use in Argentina and other Latin American countries.

Formal Education
- Course Relpe-Wikimedia Argentina: The course, conducted so far in the last three weeks, has also led to the realization of a series of activities to consider:
- Wikireferencias, participants had to reference their opinion through a Wikipedia article and position themselves as editors. You can check this out here
- The % of users in relation to the editors of Wikipedia amongst the course is 95% users and 5% editors, out from 100+ teachers and educational references.
- Wikiquote: the participants were invited to check out the Wikiquote project and search and argument for the quote that they consider the most meaningful one. You can check out the work done here.
- My online pencil case: the teachers had to inquire about which of the Wikimedia projects could be more usefully included as a tool within the pedagogical needs that they were faced with and present an argument to back that decision. This can be seen here
- 49 project files made by the teachers and educational references that take part in the course.
- Wikireferencias, participants had to reference their opinion through a Wikipedia article and position themselves as editors. You can check this out here
- The online course Wikimedia Argentina-RELPE has involved over 100 teachers and educational references from which 95 have become new Wikipedia users. The course will last 8 weeks and it's currently on its 4th week.
- Ibertic-OEI- Wikimedia Argentina: Since October 15th, together with IBERTIC OEI, Wikimedia Argentina launched a contest for teachers in order to generate a collection of royalty free images from Argentine schools. Under the category on Wikimedia Commons 'Concurso Escuelas Argentinas 2014' until December 1st, we intend not only to preserve cultural heritage of the Argentine schools but also improve the knowledge about Commons within the participating teachers:
- 70 new files uploaded' so far
- UBA- Wikimedia Argentina: On November 28th, we will launch WikiFuture, a project developed with the University of Buenos Aires. Its main goal is to bring students to a state of reflection in which they inquire on how they want the university of the future to be, by first at its past and present. This reflection will be done through the call for new photographs and/or the improvement of the photos already available in the UBA Wikimedia Commons. In order to bring the project to new users, the following tutorial has been made for the occasion.
How to upload material to Commons
- The project will end with a workshop and an edit-a-thon on November 11th, in order to position the new pictures in the different chords
Wikipedia articles. - ORT-Wikimedia Argentina: Wikimedia Argentina has signed an agreement with the school ORT No. 2 Buenos Aires. The ORT school is a benchmark in the first and secondary education by their level of technology integration in the classroom.
- The project consists of workshops editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons for at least 200 students from October to July 2015. Workshops will be conducted by at least 5 volunteers from Wikimedia Argentina.
- Specifically the project, divided for teachers and students, has the following objectives
- Teachers
- A publication will be done with relevant case studies of collaborative writing by the teachers involved.
- Three (3) workshops for teachers on teams: 1) Educational Narrative in digital culture: experiences and practices; 2) Design of educational proposals using Wikimedia projects; 3) Experiences, projections and evaluation indicators in proposed digital classroom projects. Each workshop is proposed to generate a survey to consolidate a later publication.
- Establishment of a space within the virtual campus of ORT, for posting and writing by teachers on their teaching experiences using Wikimedia and the digital culture practices in their daily work.
- Expected Results:
- Development of a digital publication: "Case Studies: Wikipedia and digital culture in the classroom. The experience of ORT."
- Students:
- Awareness of culture and Wikimedia philosophy
- Two (2) workshops in different secondary levels: a) Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and knowledge; its multiple uses b) The student as the protagonist: Be a Wikipedist, be brave!
- Two (2) participatory workshops for students on: 1) the various Wikimedia projects 2) Editing other Wikimedia projects.
- 1 (one) edit-a-thon on topics that are linked to cultural heritage and the heritage of the institution.
- Results:
- # of new editions that stem from the participation of ORT students
- # of new users that stem from the participation of ORT students
- Analysis of the presence of Wikipedia in the classrom from the intervention of Wikimedia together with students and teachers at school.
Non Formal Education
- Lenaied 2014: Wikimedia Argentina participated in the event of non-formal education Lenaied 2014. During the event more than 100 brochures on Wikimedia projects and were handed over 200 pieces of merchandising.
Conferences and talks given during Q3
- Universidad Teconológica Nacional (UTN): Wikimedia Argentina participated in the conference on digital technology in the UTN, Resistencia, Province of Chaco. More 100 students from the university and at least 10 teachers attended the talk. We are currently developing a collaboration agreement to work on specific projects next year.
- Regarding the partnership with the UTN it is necessary to emphasize that 'our participation was due to the intervention and coordination of activity by a volunteer member of Wikimedia Argentina and the Chaco region'.
- Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA): Melina Masnatta held a workshop on editing at the class of in the UBA for a total of 13 students' . The workshop was part of the teaching curriculum.
- Conferencia en el Festival HTML: Conference held in Bahia Blanca's HTML Festival about Wikimedia projects for 15 people.
- Conference in San Luis Digital: Conference held about 'Wikimedia as a new space for understanding the development' with influx of more than 30 people
.
- What worked and what did not?
- The online course we are doing with RELPE is giving very satisfactory results. There is wide acceptance by the participants and a very low level of dropouts. We understand that we are attending a need that some teachers had and that because of geographical limitations it was really hard for it to be covered. Of all the participating teachers, a group of teachers will become Educational Ambassadors to support our education programs in their local context during 2015.
- HTML festival Bahía Blanca is a very ambitious event conducted by professionals but still requires a lot of publicity. In this sense, we had a chat with fewer participants than we are used but in contrast we had a very strong media coverage:
Any additional details:
- What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
- According to the Anual Plan 2013 the main goals and activities regrading GLAM are the following:
- The main purpose of this program is to establish partnerships with cultural and heritage institutions (GLAM) for activities that promote the inclusion of content on Wikipedia. This can be achieved through three complementary lines of work:
- Support digitization of GLAM institutions, promoting the preservation of heritage and culture.
- Release of heritage collections from museums, archives and libraries in the country (at least 2 new institutions, one of them outside of Buenos Aires).
- Incorporating new institution for digitization projects and content publication on Commons/Wikisource, especially using the scanners built by Wikimedia Argentina between 2012 and 2013.
- Publication of images, photos, documents and other materials under free licenses on Wikimedia Commons, thereby supporting the sharing of heritage and knowledge.
- Promoting incorporation of content related to these institutions by volunteers in our projects (mainly Wikipedia)
- Conducting new edit-a-thons or other volunteer activity within GLAM institutions (at least 3 during the year, one of them outside of Buenos Aires).
- Performing GLAM-WIKI Conference Argentina, in May-June 2014
- Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?

Agreements with cultural institutions
- Our program digitization is in an expansive phase and three new scanners have been placed into three new institutions:
- Historical Archives of the Province of Buenos Aires: currently have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons 1732 files and images.
- Academy of Literature: have the scanner and will receive training next week
- Library of the Legislature of the Province of Buenos Aires: have the scanner and they will receive training in two weeks.
- Number of participating staff: 1 person
- Number of volunteers: 1 person The digitization program is primarily coordinated by a volunteer from Wikimedia Argentina.
- What worked and what did not?
- Our digitization program is starting to pay off. That Latin American cultural institutions are understanding the importance of giving the material available in the public domain is a great achievement, besides the 1732 documents that have been uploaded in the last 3 months. Courtesy of the Historical Archive of the Province of Buenos Aires we are currently expecting to upload at least the same amount of material in the coming months. Planning for 2015 envisages the strengthening of this project through more and better institutional training.
- Furthermore, it is also an achievement this project through the coordination of a volunteer.
- We still having issues with getting people to join our edit-a-thons. We have a very stable network of participants, but it costs us to reach new participants. With the new head of communications we are developing a new communication strategy to increase the participants and reach new groups of interest to the organization.

The main objectives and activities regarding Community Support Program for 2013-2014 are the following:
- Our goal is to support the work done by the volunteers inside the projects and outside them, giving them tools to improve their performance. This way, we will be able to create a stronger relationship with the volunteers and members of the Association, extending their permanence within the projects and encouraging participation in the chapter.
- We also expect to strength the relation between the Argentinian community of volunteers, our chapter and the global Wikimedia movement. We want to understand their motivations and challenges to participate in the projects and offline activities, so we can include their opinions in our work as a chapter.
- Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?

- Activities conducted.
Community Support
Wikimedia Argentina is committed to supporting projects submitted by volunteers. In this sense during Q3, 2 volunteers led projects have been supported and realized:
- Support for accreditation at the 35th National Festival of Immigrants: '96 images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons'
- I edit-a-thon in an Argentine football club Club Athletico Lanús: scheduled for December 6.
Strengthening relationships between Wikimedia Argentina and our Volunteers
Wikimedia Argentina's priority is to improve relations with its volunteers and strengthen their working groups for the implementation of projects and activities and position the organization through community empowerment in the countryside:
- I Wikipedians Encounter in Bahia Blanca 5 runners. While there were few who came to meet Wikimedia Argentina and its projects, it was a considerable number considering it's a small town in the countryside. Thanks to the organizers of the event we had a very good media coverage, with references in TV and press. They are available at the following links:
- Survey conducted among our volunteers and partners. The results of the same are as follows:
- Known Programs by volunteers / Wikimedia Argentina as 100% know GLAM activities and participation in local events WMAR; 80% know the activities in education
- Interest on participation: 100% interested in participating in GLAM activity
- Most useful communication media: 83% monthly reports
- How to improve the coordination of work with volunteers: '63% chooses to be commissioned specific work
Iberoconf 2014
The IV Iberoamerican Wikimedia Summit is an initiative of Iberocoop that will gather in Buenos Aires, from November 21st to 23rd 2014 the delegations representing existing Wikimedia chapters and groups in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Uruguay and Venezuela, with the participation of representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (AffCom) and Wikimedia guests from Amical, Costa Rica and Ecuador.
Iberoconf 2014 aims to be useful to enhance the development of the Wikimedia movement in Latin America. The meeting aims to be the continuation of the agreements reached in previous editions of the conference. We want to strengthen the role and capacity of members of Iberocoop, not only as individual entities, but as part of an integrated network of cooperation. While Iberoconf 2013 was the ideal field to encourage chapters and groups to "re-think" some of their projects and programs, Iberoconf 2014 aims not only to define strategic lines of work to co-design GLAM & Education programs from a regional perspective, but also to be the perfect time to review all the results obtained by the chapters this year, discuss the results and design a more effective evaluation plan that includes all participating groups.
During Q3, Wikimedia Argentina has devoted part of its time and programmatic effort to organize the best possible Iberoconf 2014. In this regard, 22 chapters and representatives of user groups are invited to participate in workdays, alongside representatives of Wikimedia Foundation, AffCom, FDC, the International Board and the Wikimedia community in Argentina. Similarly, we will have a schedule of training workshops plagued with confirmed institutions and the presence of partners that are key for the development of Wikimedia Argentina and the development of the region, such as:
- Educational website Educ.ar
- Universidad de Buenos Aires -UBA-
- Universidad de Ciencias Sociales-FLACSO-
- Ibertic-OEI
Similarly, we will count with a facilitator to help coordinate work in Education and GLAM in order to be able to have closed the main strategic lines of work in relation to these two areas by the end of Iberoconf 2014. Specially: general goals, specific goals and measurements.
The event will be supported by a stable group of volunteers, 4 which are helping with all the logistics concerning Iberoconf 2014.
You can find more information on the conference site.
- What worked and what did not?
- All the work being done by Wikimedia Argentina for Iberoconf 2014 is being developed in a timely manner. Wikimedia Argentina, through the work of the staff and the group of volunteers who make up the committee for Iberoconf 2014, is working collaboratively to make this year's event a success. In this regard, it is noteworthy the support that Wikimedia Argentina is receiving from its Board of Directors, which further confirms the good relations prevailing within the organization and the active cooperation of the CD in all the projects and activities held by the entity.
- The meeting of Wikipedians in Bahía Blanca was scarce. While there were more confirmed people than the number that finally went, the reality is that few Wikipedians came to learn about our projects and activities. Similarly, the development of this activity, which was generally less populated than what we are used to, marked a new parameter on which to work in relation to the small towns of the countryside. In this regard, we believe that communication should be more personalized and above all should be more careful when we call for activities and events where participation is guaranteed.
- We hope to continue working to resolve these issues in the near future.

- The main objetives and activities regarding the Contest Program are:
- The objective of this program is to encourage volunteer participation through contests in different Wikimedia projects, attracting new editors, reactivating those that have retired and motivating the current ones. Such contests usually have good reception by the media and are a good opportunity to show to the general audience how crucial it is to involve volunteers to Wikimedia projects and continue to improve them permanently.
- Photo contest: We want to organize a photo contest by mid-2014. We are evaluating currently to continue with Wiki Loves Monuments or to start a new contest
- Edit contest: Similar to Mujeres iberoamericanas, but with a more simple approach so new editors can join more easily. It can be focused on Wikipedia or Wikivoyage.
- Digitization contest: There is a lot of old documents, books and photos (under PD) that people has in their homes but has never been encouraged to upload them to Commons. We expect that with this contest, we can enrich our heritage and avoid the disappearance of valuable documents.
- Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?

Photography contest
- On October 10th, Wikimedia Argentina with the support of LAN Airlines launched its annual photo contest. In cooperation with the activity proposed by Chile, Wikimedia Argentina launched Wiki Tour, a photography competition that under three categories -landscapes, cultural expressions and architectural expressions- seeks to improve the Argentine content of Wikimedia Commons through its many cultural expressions.
- Until November 10th participation is open.
- So far the results are:
- New Images: 1000+
- 'Communication strategy':
- We are using the central notice banner for Argentina
- The following note was published on the website educ.ar [only in Spanish]: educ.ar
- Melina Masnatta conducted an interview with the University of Buenos Aires' Radio - where he spoke and promoted the contest.
Editing contest
- Wikimedia Argentina jointly with UNESCO on late September launched a photo and editing contest for students from the schools associated with RED PEA UNESCO in Argentina, with ages ranging from 7 to 19 years old.
This contest, which involves the use of Wikimedia Commons and Wikivoyage, aims to make students stakeholders in promoting their own localities, through photography and editing as a teaching resource in the classroom. In this regard, it is important to discuss the involvement by teachers in the project. You can find more information about it in the link below.
- What worked and what did not?
- Wiki Tour, even though there are still few photographs is going very well. 90% of the photos were uploaded during last week, which leads us to believe that is this participation logic that will govern the contest until its end. It has also enjoyed from a strong communication campaign, both by our social networks and through other media partners who have joined us in other projects.
- The competition is getting very slow editing results. In spite of being in permanent contact with UNESCO and at the same time they have close contact with their network of teachers who are working closely with students, we expect to see the first results in some weeks. In this sense, we have a special interest in the performance of the youngest students in publishing.

- The main goals and activities designed for the Outreach Program during 2013-104 are the following:
- Continue the realization of lectures and presentations about Wikipedia in different institutions, with a special focus on indigenous groups, women and cities outside Buenos Aires area.
- Design of a new manual about Wikimedia Commons (or translation of an existing one) and a video.
- Design of a new manual about Wikitravel and a video.
- Publishing and printing other relevant documents and promotional materials.
- Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?

Activity | Progress | Impact |
Design new manual Wikimedia Commons | One tutorial designed | At least 100+ teachers from our online course and the new participants of the new activity "Wikifuture" launched on october 28th |
Design new manual Wikitravel | One tutorial designed | All the participants of the editing contest |
Publishing and printing new material | 1500 new brochures about Wikimedia projects | 500+ people reached thanks to WMAR's participation in lectures and conferences |
Presentations of WMAR with focus on gender and diversity | Not yet available | One presentation planned on November 29th |
- Participation in communication channels:
- Facebook: 1,509 followers in June- 1715 on october 22nd.
- Twitter: 1,326 followers on July 21st- 1468 on october 21st .
- Staff involved: 2 staff member (2 full-time).
- Activities conducted.
- Wikimedia Argentina has made new material to support the one already available from the years 2012-2013. In this case, we made a brochure about the Wikimedia projects and 1500 of them were printed to support the actions of Wikimedia Argentina. After performing various promotional activities, we believe that given the quantity and quality of materials designed last year, we should support the projects of Wikimedia Argentina with a more generic brochure on the specific activities of the organization locally and the Wikimedia projects in general. To date more than 500 brochures were given away in various Wikimedia Argentina outreach activities, and we are sure that we are going to use them frequently in training workshops that we will hold at ORT school No. 2 and next year in the various workshops with Conectar Igualdad.
- Wikimedia Argentina plans to hold a talk about Wikipedia and the gender gap alongside a edit-a-thon on this topic, on November 29th in conjunction with UNESCO IIEP. IIEP UNESCO is one of our main partners in gender for the next year; this organization together with Wikimedia Argentina intends to carry out a project in 4 Argentine localities in order to analyze the gender gap in technology and specifically in the Wikimedia projects.
- Two new tutorials were conducted in Spanish. Following the vision of easy understanding, a tutorial on Wikimedia Commons and one on Wikipedia have been made during Q3. Can you find them in the links:
- How to edit in Wikipedia
- How to upload to Wikimedia Commons (needs some corrections, that's why it's not public yet)
- Wikimedia Argentia is working with the company Educatina [2] in a website for free educational videos that aim to help students of all ages and levels.
- Many young people in Latin America have limited access to a system of personalized tutoring during their secondary school education. Given that today many governments have technological programs that provide computer equipment for the entire school population, it is our commitment to provide supervised contained community, to provide more tools and improve educational processes across Latin America. Currently, Educatina's videos have been viewed by more than 3.000.0000 students and played about 56,000,000 times. Together with Educatina, Wikimedia Argentina will develop a series of 17 to 21 videos with topics such as free culture, Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.
- What worked and what did not?
- The communication strategy begins to give the expected results in the social networks. In this regard, we verified a high growth regarding our reach over the past three months, thanks in large part to the various conferences, new audiences and new contests for all audiences.
- The tutorial video on Wikivoyage is not giving the expected results. While it is edited very simply to understand everyone, we are waiting to see how the project develops within the Wikimedia projects, and if the process is understood. Specifically, it shouldn't be concluded that the tutorial is the cause of low participation. As mentioned earlier we are waiting to see in the next few weeks the involvement of students in editing items in Wikivoyage.

- What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
- The main ojetives drawn for the Organizational Strengthening program are:
- Design a long-term strategy that allows the Association to guide its next steps in the coming years.
- Addition of new staff that can address projects more efficiently.
- Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?
Table 7
Activity | Progress | Impact |
Long term strategy | Long term strategy designed | Mision and vision defined- goals and activities stablished- Main strategic lines defined |
Addition staff | 1 Education Oficcer hired part-time | 5+ new agreements with educational institutions and 1 with the national government. At least 300+ teachers, students and educational referents reached. |
Staff strengthening skills | 1 logical framework workshop | Planned on November. |
- Activities conducted.
- Wikimedia Argentina has completed the realization of its strategic planning. While this is focused for the year 2014-2015, it is true that the work approaches and mainstreaming of gender and diversity set baselines for the development of work and future plans. In this sense, we can claim that we have laid the foundations for the homogeneous development future work.
- Wikimedia Argentina plans to provide their employees with training in Logical Framework Approach. The LFA is the methodology currently governs the operation of the programs, projects and activities of Wikimedia Argentina. Training the staff on these parameters is paramount to reach the intended results in the future.
- What worked and what did not?
- Being able to lay the foundations that will guide the development of programs and projects in the coming years already supposes significant progress. The most important change is to start thinking long-term rather than short-term through activities with scarcer results and a less noticeable impact.
- The difference of disciplines in the team makes this very rich in terms of program content. Likewise, it is true, that limitations in project management methodology generate aa disparities in formulating, implementing and evaluating the projects we are currently developing. We hope, through the implementation of specific training, to address this issue.

Lessons learned
editLessons from this quarter
editA key objective of the funding is to enable the movement as a whole to understand how to achieve shared goals better and faster. An important way of doing this is to identify lessons learned from entities who receive funds, and to share these lessons across the movement. The purpose of this section is to elicit some of these insights, which will be shared throughout the movement. Please answer the following questions in 1–2 paragraphs each.
What were your major accomplishments in the past quarter, and how did you help to achieve movement goals?
- Wikimedia Argentina considered to have had two great achievements during Q3:
- Online Course by Wikimedia Argentina-RELPE: The online course by RELPE and Wikimedia Argentina has been a success regarding participation and is allowing us to access multiple locations in Argentina and other countries in the region. In this sense, what came to be a pilot test, drives us to continue to analyze what are the interests of teachers and educational leaders in the region and how we can meet their needs through the delivery of courses. The online format is also working very well and the activities and the willingness of the participants has been excellent.
- Our digitization program is beginning to take its first big results. While it is coordinated by a volunteer, the digitization program by Wikimedia Argentina is an example of a relatively good performance through the involvement of volunteers. While much remains to be digitized and it is true that we pose the program in a different way for 2015, with more institutional strengthening it is also true that 1700+ documents released is already a good amount when it comes to a public institution.
What were your major setbacks in the past quarter (e.g., programs that were not successful)?
- The contest Viajando por el patrimonio de nuestro país conducted jointly with UNESCO is getting poor results. While we are adventuring into working with groups of a very young age- the youngest ones are 7 years old- we are still in a very early stage. Also, thanks to the collaboration of UNESCO we know that teachers from different schools are supporting their students to participate so we expect it to become active once October is over, a complex month for both students and schools in Argentina.
What factors (organizational, environmental) enabled your success?
- Good team coordination in carrying out the various activities has been key to the realization of all the projects we have driven the last three months. Our staff is relatively new, conforming itself since March to the latest addition in September. During the first few months we had to adapt ourselves to representing Wikimedia Argentina and also to analyze in detail what was the contextual situation with which we were working and how we would work on it. After months of meetings, projects designed and co-created, every one of them are coming to fruition since September. The workload involved in several major projects drive at a time, would have been impossible without the support of not only the staff but also to our volunteers and our Directive Board.
What unanticipated challenges did you encounter and how did this affect what you were able to accomplish?
- After Maria Cruz, our former head of communications, resigned for professional reasons, Nicolas Miranda was hired and fired a few months later. Nicolas was a person with excellent writing skills but little experience with digital contexts, very important skills to work in Wikimedia Argentina. In this regard, the team had to make an effort and opened a new call that ended with the hiring of Valentín Muro. Staff turnover was clearly a considerable setback.
What changes might you make in executing your initiatives into the next quarter?
- The next quarter, we intend to improve the team's involvement in the drafting of reports according to the estimated accuracy of the Foundation. The involvement of staff in conducting survey and results is needed to achieve more correctly our goals.
