Description:

In this session, you will learn about two different approaches for developing cultural heritage activities in Wikimedia affiliates.

Do-evaluate-redo: Practical evaluation methodologies for Opening up Culture and Heritage. Seminar for cultural institutions.

During 2023, the Culture Program from Wikimedia Colombia has been constructing a training program on the Wikimedia Ecosystem for individuals associated with Cultural and Heritage Institutions. This Seminare, named as Open up Culture and Heritage, is centered on sharing experiences on projects developed by the Wikimedia Community for collaborating with museums, archives and libraries which could be addressed as references for the processes through which we can make heritage collections from different institutions around the world, public, accessible and open. Additionally, the seminar included a project prototyping session, aiming to diagnose the needs and opportunities for engagement with specific cultural institutions by the creation of projects that link to the Wikimedia Ecosystem. Through the support and conversations held with the Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM team, the possibility/necessity of considering a contextualized evaluation approach emerged, enabling us to understand how these training processes can contribute to community growth. This experience will be the first pilot of a seminar model that aims to be applicable in different contexts and countries.

The proposed presentation will revolve around the analysis and presentation of results from this initial approach, focusing on three key aspects: experiences shared by the event's organizers, experiences recounted from the perspective of the participating individuals, and finally, experiences from the jointly designed evaluation methodology between Wikimedia Colombia and the Culture and Heritage team of the Wikimedia Foundation.

2. Theory of Change for culture & heritage activities at AvoinGLAM

AvoinGLAM presents our Theory of Change which we have started to work on during the autumn of 2023 to negotiate, express and justify our activities in the Open Access to Cultural Heritage space and within the Wikimedia movement locally, thematically and globally.

We will relate our work to strategies in Open Access to cultural heritage: Open Culture at Creative Commons, Wikimedia Strategy, the redefinition of the Open Definition in the Open Knowledge Network, Open Knowledge Finland’s strategy, and our perspectives on Global Languages, Art & Memory.

The Theory of Change is intended to crystallize our objectives and outcomes, and to make the impact of our work clearly articulated. Through the work we also wish to contribute to a shared understanding of the impact of the culture & heritage work as well as the needs to achieve our goals. We should look at the whole Wikimedia apparatus from a GLAM perspective.

The format is a presentation, but we would like to see it as food for thought for a broader discussion.
