GLAM WikiConference
Montevideo, Uruguay
16–18 November, 2023

Online activities

  • Join the Latin America in Wikidata challenge starting on Nov. 14, where we aim to improve information about Latin American authors. Help us highlight the region that is hosting the GLAM Wiki Conference by playing the Wikidata Distributed Game! There are prizes for the participants that edit the most.
  • Join the Edit-a-thon "Women in sciences" sponsored by L'Oréal Groupe. Help us highlight the women from Latin America that won the L'Oréal-UNESCO award in their countries by improving and translating their biographies. For people participating online, there will be three USD 100 Amazon gift cards to those who edit the most.

Keeping up with the Joneses - Watch the video

Jason Evans (National Library of Wales)

Learn about how the National Library of Wales keeps their catalog records in order using Wikidata with the help of AI, OpenRefine and crowdsourcing initiatives. This talk cover NLW motivations, techniques and the challenges faced as well as practical and visual examples of how the enriched data can be used to serve multiple goals.

Connected Heritage - Wikimedia UK's two year outreach programme to small GLAMs - Watch the video

Richard Nevell (Wikimedia UK)

This presentation shares Wikimedia UK's recent work with smaller heritage organisations, under an externally-funded project called 'Connected Heritage'. This programme, launched in 2021 and is coming to an end this November, was funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund. It had a unique set up and format. This presentation shares how the programme got set up, how it got shaped by being externally funded, and how we designed the delivery. I will talk about the funnel of engagement, starting with awareness raising webinars, then open online editathons, to 'mini Residencies' which we provided from within our staff team.

Wikiproyecto Chiloé: una experiencia de acceso abierto al patrimonio histórico del sur de Chile - Watch the video

Pablo Javier Paredes Navarro (Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez) Wikiproject Chiloé is a Wikipedia project launched in 2018, with the goal of improving the quantity and quality of the articles related to Chiloé archipelago in southern Chile. While having a broad geographical perspective, it is mostly oriented to culture, heritage, and history, due to the fact of being the territory of one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites of Chile: the wooden churches of Chiloé. This effort contributes to a better understanding of the cultural richness of Chiloé, making easily accessible these contents for the local community, educational institutions, and for tourism initiatives. With this project, we aim to conserve the cultural memory of the archipelago.

Exploring Social Attention Dynamics through Wikipedia: This investigation focuses on how patterns of edits, views, and discussions within Wikipedia articles, as well as their features, can serve as real-time indicators of public interest and engagement, and how Wikipedia can be a reflection of collective concerns, capturing significant trends and shifts in societal focus.
