Submission no. 58
Title of the submission
Pattypan workshop for beginners and advanced users

Pattypan is a tool for batch uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons. The tool was developed to fill the need for easy-to-use tools for batch uploading. Pattypan is actively developed and maintained since 2016 by me and group of volunteers and has already been used to upload over 170 000 images.

Abstract

The workflow is simple: media files are stored offline in a single folder, metadata for each file are prepared in a spreadsheet and Pattypan combines the two and uploads them to Wikimedia Commons. The biggest advantage of this workflow are (1) GLAMs without online media repository can still batch upload media to Wikimedia Commons, and (2) users can do metadata conversions in well-known spreadsheet programs like Excel or Calc.

In this workshop, I want to provide an overview of the Pattypan workflow. Beginners can follow step-by-step instructions in order to create first successful batch upload. Fore more experienced users I want to show how they can optimize their workflow by using built-in features of freemarker template engine used in Pattypan.

Attendees are invited to bring a few media files that can be uploaded during workshop.

What will attendees take away from this session?
  1. what is Pattypan and how it works,
  2. how to prepare images to batch upload,
  3. how to properly create spreadsheet with data,
  4. how to optimize workflow and minimize volume of work
