GALILEO Masters 2004

GALILEO Masters is the First European Idea Competition of the Satellite Navigation. The goal of the project is to find applications for the European satellite navigation system GALILEO, which is going to start operations in 2008, already at this stage. See http://www.galileo-masters.com for details. Stefan Richter and other Wikipedians of the German Wikipedia submited a proposal to the competition at Juli 30, 2004.

Basic idea of our proposal is enriching Wikipedia with geographical data. Mobile applications like PDAs, mobile phones, navigation systems can acces Wikipedia to get information on geographical positions like famous buildings, historical sites, rivers and lakes and so on. The project will be called Wikimaps or will be part of a larger Wikimaps project, that also aimes at creating maps.

A comprehensive summary of the discussion taken place at Talk:GALILEO Masters 2004 until Juli 27, 2004 ca be found at Talk:GALILEO Masters 2004/Zusammenfassung (both mainly in German).

Idea edit

  • User:Heron - korrekturlesen (englisch)

Schedule/Milestones edit

You may think this is not wiki-style and overhead but first we need to be ready in time and second we want to win, so our submission has to be the best one.

  • So 18: collecting basic ideas and collaborators
  • Mi 21: structure and content of the submission
  • So 25: formulating basic parts, collecting images and content for every part
  • Mi 28: formulating and filling all the rest
  • Do 29: Linguistic corrections and translation of non-english parts
  • Fr 30: formatting, submission

Some tasks edit

  • What should a perfect submission look like? What should it contain?
  • What hardware is possible (Notebook, PDA, Mobile...) WAP, HTML etc.?
  • What free sources of geographical data do we have or which ones do we expect to get open?
  • What techniques are there to represent geographical data and how to we put them into Wiki syntax?
  • What is needed to implement our system (basic architecture)?
  • "Screenshots", photos, diagrams showing our system in action!
  • Why do we think we can do it?
  • What is Wikipedia/Wikimedia and why is it so innovative, useful etc.?
  • Why is our project the best? (The blurb)
  • ...

Screenshots wanted! edit

Hi,

For our proposal for the GALILIEO MASTERS competition (see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GALILEO_Masters_2004 ) wee need some convincing images. I doubt the jury is familiar with Wikipedia and the Wiki concept and a good images is always better than tons of text.

Any Idea? I thought of a photo of a subnotebook or PDA showing a Wikimedia interface and geographical information. Surely you have to pretend a screenshot of a system we do not already have - it's a proposal. Maybe two or three images in one are better than a single screenshot. First somebody with a GPS device is looking for information. Then he gets a list of articles "You are near ... read the Wikipedia article" "You are within ..." and buttons like "increase radius", "limit to categories ..." and/or a small map of the world or a part of it. Then another screenshot shows how he can directly edit the article. This is needed for the "Wow! everybody can add information!"-feeling (the Wiki concept is only familiar to us)!.

We need some cool images untill friday. The creator of the best image will win a lot of fame ;-)

Greetings, Jakob

Status edit

The GALILEO MASTERS committee did unfortunately not choose to include this proposal into the candidate list.

See at Wikimaps/GeonamenDB (german) for a new project which will (hopefully) deliver a first component which along the idea of this initial project idea. It is a geographic names database.
