Welcome to the first issue of Universal Code of Conduct News! This newsletter will help Wikimedians stay involved with the development of the new code, and will distribute relevant news, research, and upcoming events related to the UCoC.

Please note, this is the first issue of UCoC Newsletter which is delivered to all subscribers and projects as an announcement of the initiative. If you want the future issues delivered to your talk page, village pumps, or any specific pages you find appropriate, you need to subscribe here.

You can help us by translating the newsletter issues in your languages to spread the news and create awareness of the new conduct to keep our beloved community safe for all of us. Please add your name here if you want to be informed of the draft issue to translate beforehand. Your participation is valued and appreciated.

  • Affiliate consultations – Wikimedia affiliates of all sizes and types were invited to participate in the UCoC affiliate consultation throughout March and April 2021. (continue reading)
  • 2021 key consultations – The Wikimedia Foundation held enforcement key questions consultations in April and May 2021 to request input about UCoC enforcement from the broader Wikimedia community. (continue reading)

Form 990Edit

It is now mostly one year since the fiscal year 2019-2020 ended and I havent found the Form 990 for that year. The Form 990 is a public information with tax related informations that is filled out by organisations with their seat in the United States. When do you publish the Form 990 for that Fiscal Year. From my point of view it should be possible to publish it soon after the Financial Statements, what was published in October 2020. From my point of view the most questions in the Form 990 are based on clear definitions and so I think it should be possible to fill the Form 990 semiautomatic, if the accounting data is detailed enough. Please tell me when you plan to publish the Form 990 and also how you fill it out and do you think that it is possible to make it faster. Maybe it is possible that the Finance Team of the Wikimedia Foundation makes a Office Hour and then interested people can attend and maybe there can be then found ways to make it faster. --Hogü-456 (talk) 19:16, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Announcing the confirmed candidates for the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees electionEdit

The 2021 Board of Trustees election opens 4 August 2021. Candidates from the community were asked to submit their candidacy. After a three week long call for candidates, there are 20 candidates for the 2021 election.

The Wikimedia movement has the opportunity to vote for the selection of community-and-affiliate trustees. The Board is expected to select the four most voted candidates to serve as trustees. Voting closes 17 August 2021.

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees oversees the Wikimedia Foundation's operations. The Board wants to improve their competences and diversity as a team. They have shared the areas of expertise that they are currently missing and hope to cover with new trustees.

Upcoming UCOC/MSG round-table discussion on 17 July 2021 at 15:00 UTCEdit


The Movement Strategy and Governance facilitation team will be hosting round-table discussions for Wikimedians to talk together about the Universal Code of Conduct, Movement Charter, ongoing 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections, and other Movement Strategy initiatives.

The next call is 17 July 2021 at 15:00 UTC. Conversations will be hosted in at least French, German, Spanish, and English.

The calls will last between 90 and 120 minutes and involve open discussions. The ideas shared during the calls will be summarized for the Wikimedia Foundation teams working on these topics.

WMF organizational structureEdit

In the last weeks I have thinked about decision making and how far hierarchy is neccessary for that. After the Wikimedia Foundation does not have an CEO at the moment I have thinked about how far a CEO is needed or if there are other possibilities to make decisions. In the Wikimedia Projects there are only flat hierarchies. In the Wikimedia Foundation there are several levels of staff and so there is a in relation to the Wikimedia projects high hierarchy. From my point of view the currenct situation can be a chance to think about how far it is needed and possible to reorganize the Wikimedia Foundation to make sure that the employees can participate in the decisions to avoid decisions that are done without a clearer understanding of a situation. From my point of view maybe one change could be to create a leader team instead of one CEO to reduce hierarchy. There are examples of companies with several chiefs responsible for different topics. This is from my point of view a good thing. I asked a question on today at the conversation about the Annual Plan if it is planned to implement something like a work council at the Wikimedia Foundation for the representation of the employees and as far as I have understand there are plans to do that. What do you think about the structure of the Wikimedia Foundation. Do you think that there is a lot of hierarchy or not and what do you think about the idea of having a team that leads the Wikimedia Foundation instead of one CEO. As a volunteer I am interested in good working conditions for the employees and I also like that there are low hierarchies at the Wikimedia Foundation. It is from my point of view for employees more atractive to work with low hierarchy if there is a clear mission as it is in the Wikimedia Foundation.--Hogü-456 (talk) 19:42, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Blocking Wikimedia projects in IranEdit

Iranian parliament has passed a law according to which the general management of the Internet will be handed over to the armed forces and the situation of the Iranian Internet will become something between North Korea and China.[2] According to the plan, foreign platforms must either be officially active in Iran and comply with the requests of Iran's security agencies or will be blocked. I have no doubt that they will block Wikipedia and all other projects in order to get rid of all its political and sexual content and establish their own controlled encyclopedia.
