The flow funding member IbrahimPsy111 recently submitted a project for funding that unfortunately did not fit the new criteria suggested by the WMF (WMF grants do not compensate volunteers for their time). With IbrahimPsy111's permission I'm adding the content of her project below so that other flow funding members, and the community, could help her with suggestions and comments. - Project: Training Librarians to Become Campus Ambassadors
- Duration: March - July 2013
- Description: We currently don't have any Wikipedia Ambassadors on our campus who can show students how to use the correct “code” to edit Wikipedia without too much frustration. So, there is a definite need for technical support for students who are editing Wikipedia articles as a class assignment. As a flow-funder I would like to spend the $2000 allocated to me as compensation for a librarian who would spend time over the early summer familiarizing herself with the Wikipedia editing language. There are many great tutorials already on the web and I believe there will be online training for Ambassadors as well, so no travel costs will be involved for training. The goal is to then have the trained librarian give demos in classes as needed, and offer a summer workshop for interested faculty.
- Who will receive funding: The Systems and Web Services Librarian at Concordia College, in Moorhead, MN. She has been employed by the college since 2001 as a reference and instruction librarian with additional responsibilities in the area of library-related technology. As such, her interest in integrating new technologies and online tools into information literacy instruction aligns with the scope of this project and with the role of a campus Wikipedia Ambassador for Concordia College. She is a full-time employee of the college and has been providing support for students, particularly in the sciences, for many years. I had a conversation with her about this flow-funding project and she seemed interested in completing it. She indicated that it would not be a problem to finish the project by mid-July and she was committed to offering a faculty workshop for interested faculty in summer 2013 and to offering in-class support to students as needed in the future.
- Project's potential for impact: Wikimedia’s mission is to “empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally”. This project will hopefully increase the number of Wikipedia articles created and expanded by college students. Having a positive experience editing Wikipedia articles will likely lead to an increased commitment to continue editing Wikipedia beyond the college years and the specific class projects assigned. Supporting the development of more future Wikipedians would no doubt impact Wikipedia in a positive way and help further Wikimedia’s mission.. The project will have most impact on the English language Wikipedia in the USA.
- Total amount requested: USD $2000 compensation for training hours spent by a librarian
