Ambiguous scope

edit

Is the scope meant to be:

  1. "women in politics, democracy, elections [or] governance within AU states" or rather
  2. "women in politics, in democracy, in elections or in governance within AU states" ?

Given the "EmpowerHer" name of the editathon, the latter interpretation seems more likely. (As for "and" vs "or", I can't imagine that "and" is meant literally, because some women in AU states may be involved in democracy but not elections, or in politics but not democracy, or governance that is undemocratic, and still be a priority for coverage.) @Bukky658: Could you please clarify? It won't necessarily affect my editing, but some people might be motivated by the points system ... Boud (talk) 23:39, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Boud Thank you for reaching out for clarification and for your insightful observations. I appreciate your engagement with the EmpowerHer editathon and your attention to the details that shape our collective effort.
To clarify, the scope you should consider is indeed the second option: "women in politics, in democracy, in elections, or in governance within AU states." The EmpowerHer campaign aims to encompass a broad spectrum of activities and roles that women in African Union states undertake within these areas. We seek to highlight and document the diverse contributions of women, whether they are directly involved in politics, playing a role in democratic processes, participating in elections, or contributing to governance, irrespective of the democratic nature of their involvement.
Your point about the 'and' versus 'or' is well-taken and aligns with our inclusive approach to recognizing and amplifying the varied ways women contribute across these domains. We aim to capture the richness of women's involvement without restricting it to those who are active across all these areas simultaneously.
I hope this provides the clarity you need, and I'm eager to see your contributions to the editathon. If you have any more questions or need further details, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Bukky658 OK, thanks for the clarification :). Next question: Is "Your articles will automatically be listed ..." an expression of good intentions, but in reality requiring manual editing of Event:EmpowerHer Editathon 2024/Resources and Suggested articles#List of articles/ items created by participants, or is there a script running or in preparation that will really do this automatically (in principle possible - but I'm not volunteering to write the script)? Boud (talk) 17:31, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I have effected the changes and that must have been a mix up. All participants creating or translating an article or item from scratch are expected to list them on here Bukky658 (talk) 09:46, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Bukky658 OK. But I get the impression that participants are expected to (or recommended to?) connect to and in some sense "start" a connection (probably the wrong term) at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/AWA_Community/Anglophone_EmpowerHer_Edithathon_2024/home . My guess is that that page - external to regular Wikipedia pages - is meant just as a guide - find out more easily who is editing what and when. And then either participants or coordinators can use that to help work out what to add to the List_of_articles/_items_created_by_participants table. The logging there seems to only start after the first connection, which I did just a few minutes ago. Boud (talk) 18:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Voluntary waiver(s)

edit

@Bukky658 and FuzzyMagma: Just in case I happen to get ranked for one of the prizes (I see that right now on the English Dashboard by word count and references added I'm currently at the top), I hereby declare a waiver against receiving the prize money. I'm not in the right demographic for needing encouragement for editing in these topics, and I'm unlikely to spend a week with a mentor - I edit when I happen to have some time free and see editing that needs to be done - sporadically and without any promise to edit further. You're welcome to calculate points for me :), but in the final decision please make a human intervention and strike me out from the top three if I happen to be there, based on this waiver. (Anyone else who feels that they should declare a waiver can add that in this section.) What's important is to build a sustainable community of editors - and mostly it will be women from AU states who will be the most motivated (and best informed) to create and maintain these sorts of pages in the long term - not me. Boud (talk) 23:22, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Boud thanks for the generous gesture and I appreciate your work. I am yet to get fully involved due to some ''entanglements'' in the real world but watch out for the top spot! And then I will also declare a waiver. FuzzyMagma (talk) 09:41, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I've just blocked someone claiming that you all ok'd them asking for people's personal details

edit

See [1] If this was really your approved way of disbursing the prize money, it was incredibly poorly thought out and executed. Just give one specific person your real name and address, and also for some reason, where you work? This can't be real, can it? (sorry, you can't actually see the edits as they have been deleted, but that is what they asked for) Just Step Sideways (talk) 19:13, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for my late response here @Just Step Sideways. I have expressed my regret here, and now realized the request sent to top contributors was poorly executed. I should have guided the partnering organization appropriately, that such requests are not acceptable within our community guidelines, including the African Wikipedian Alliance Community where I act in my capacity as the community Coordinator . I take full responsibility for my actions and assure you that this behaviour was an isolated incident. I now understand the seriousness of the situation and promise that it will not be repeated in the future. I also look forward to sharing my experience with other Program Organisers who may not be aware, so they can learn from it. Thanks Bukky658 (talk) 07:11, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
