Event:WikiCon Australia 2024/Submissions/Uploading Central Australian Historical Images to Wikimedia Commons

Ensuring cultural sensitivity when uploading First Nations images to Wikimedia Commons

edit

Abstract/description

edit

This will be a repeat (with updates) of the talk given by Alice and Belinda at the 2024 ESEAP Conference with information more specific to the Australian Wikimedian community.

This session will look at the partnership achieved between Wikimedia Australia and the Alice Springs Public Library. The images uploaded included those of First Nations people and I will look at the processes undertaken to ensure that these are suitable for upload to a public platform and where we sought guidance from in this project.

What I am hoping to achieve

edit
  • Provide an example of a project undertaken by the Wikimedia Australia team in 2024 and our learnings from them.
  • Look at the positive growth achieved from projects like these by both awareness raising of our platforms and the addition of great content to Wiki spaces.
  • Look at First Nations resources that are available to guide projects like these and what some of the considerations are.

Relationship to Wiki skills or to the theme

edit

This fits directly under the First Nations theme and attempts to show how to negotiate content (in this case images) with First Nations people.
