Recognising and Managing Conflicts of Interest

edit

Abstract/description

edit

Over the last decade or so, concerns about conflict of interest editing on the Wikimedia projects have given rise to a host of policies, guidelines and procedures. These range from modifications to the Foundation's Terms of Use through to the creation of special functionary roles within the English Wikipedia to work with non-public information. The result of this is a mess of differing opinions and standards. In this talk we'll look at the history of COI editing and how it has led the projects to this point, discuss the responses and expectations, and look at how contributors can manage their activities to meet the various requirements and address any concerns that may be raised. This is an issue potentially of relevance to all contributors on all projects, but may be particularly relevant to people contributing to the projects from within institutions in a range of roles.
