Equity Watch Initiative

Background

Gender equality is a familiar commitment in regional and international development policies, from the Maputo Plan of Action through the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite these commitments, gender inequalities continue to hamper the ability of women and girls to survive, thrive and contribute meaningfully to development efforts. Equity Watch Initiative builds a community of activists that are committed to bridging the gender gap in information access to reduce the existing inequalities in the society and make the world a better place for all persons of different gender to to live and contribute to development. Equity Watch Initiative (E-WIN) is a group of volunteer editors that seek to close the gender gap in Wikimedia projects and bridge gender gaps in information and knowledge access to contribute to open and free knowledge for the global community.

MISSION

Equity Watch Initiative is committed to promoting gender equality and empower women and girls through open knowledge to foster an inclusive society for a sustainable future.

VISION

A gender-equitable world where men, women, boys and girls work as partners for a better future that guarantees open knowledge and information access for all.

Objectives

To promote the use and contributions to Wikimedia projects by women.
To increase the reach of Wikimedia as it pertains to gender gaps in literature especially in African and Nigeria specifically.
To reduce the gender gap in Wikimedia projects
To partner with organizations and bodies involved in gender issues for increased gender contents in Wikimedia projects.
To generate and promote free knowledge about women in Nigeria and Africa at large.
To educate and encourage African photographers to contribute to Commons.
To Provide a safe space for people who are voluntarily engaging in Wikimedia to collaborate on projects, discuss strategies, and socialize with each other.

Our major activities will focus on

Trainings: E-WIN will organize in-person and online tutorials, edit-a-thons, meet-ups, panel sessions and encourage participation in the Wikimedia activities.

Meet-ups: E_win will be organizing online and in-person meet-ups for her members to give room for exchange of ideas, address challenges, recommendations and feedbacks.

Contests there will be contests especially at the end of the year to encourage more participants to get involved and for more results.

Campaigns We will also be organizing campaigns to create more awareness and encourage participation.
