ESEA Meetup/MeetingMinutes

After Wikimania 2014 in London, we want to get to know better our Asian friends. So we have decided to start regular meetups around the South East Asian and CJK cultural region. Basically, we will Skype monthly, and here is the space for the meeting minutes.

Update: Since November 2014, the monthly Skype meeting has becomed stagnant. We have changed the communicating channel into Facebook. This will be a page to document Anyone who is willing to join the ongoing conversation, please contact Liang_(WMTW) through his Facebook account.

  • Briefly introduced the place we live now. Showed the co-working space in Taiwan. And the home office in California.
  • Quick updates on what we are working on for the Wikipedia Education Program. WMTW is making the final edits to the Traditional Chinese brochure. The education team is changing the cover of the booklet, hope next week will have a new cover for the Editing Wikipedia Brochure.
  • Discussed why in Liang's perspective (maybe a Taiwan centered idea) to have this regional meetup, to better understand the cultures of the SEA+CJK countries.
  • Brainstormed and researched possible contacts in the SEA&CJK region. We will try to use WP talk page or email to let them know they are not alone. See the Local contacts section on the main project page.
  • Agreed to meet regularly, at the end of each month, on a weekend, preferably on a Saturday so that it will not interfere with church on Sunday.
Next steps
  1. Liang: ask people from China (Addis), Hong Kong (Samuel, Kris, Venus), Japan (Takashi), and Thailand (Taweetham) to join the next meeting and fill up the table
  2. Liang: send the email to let the Philippines know that we had a meeting since there was some confusion about what date we would talk
  3. Liang: set up a new google calendar invitation for the next meetup via Skype call/Google Hangout: Saturday, 27 September morning in USA/evening in SEA

  1. What happened the last month in our country -
    • Briefly introduced the projects Taiwan part is working on the past 2 months. Wikimedia Taiwan talked to 5 or 6 groups about the project Wiki Seed of Taiwan Knowledge, and a student club in Taipei University is willing to host its own Wikimedia meetup every month. Due to Liang can't get a proper screenshot and went help from Tighe, the Traditional Chinese brochure is delayed.
    • Philippines is working with the local cultural heritage mapping project, one of the result is Lichauco_Heritage_House. Philippines also want to host monthly writing bootcamp, so Reke share to Eugene the wikipage of Newbie Writing Bootcamp on Chinese Wikipedia to share the experience in Taiwan. Also, the Wikipedia Zero Project is launched in Philippines, too. Here is the press release.
  2. Brainstormed and researched possible contacts in the SEA&CJK region.
    • Would love to host in Indonesia in the 1st quarter in 2015. But since no one from Indonesia join the meetup today, because of the Eid al-Adha holiday, need to get their updates on the venue (budget, willingness to host)
    • The size of the regional meetup maybe 5-10 countries in the South East Asia and East Asia region.
    • We still need to find out what should we do if we have a regional workshop, since every country in the region are doing different things, we still have to get to know the need for each country related to Wikimedia projects. But Liang think one of the common issue in the region is Evaluation.
  3. About next meetup
    • Reminder of the last meeting, we agreed to meet regularly, at the end of each month, on a weekend, preferably on a Saturday so that it will not interfere with church on Sunday.
    • Since Anna Koval and Carolyne Schloeder is going to be in Philippines during 22-26 October for Wikimedia Zero Project (hosting a workshop for school teacher - "Tap&Learn"), we draft the time for next meet up on 25 October, the exact time is on the doodle survey.
Action items
  1. Eugene: ask Ichsan Mochtar that what would be the updates in Indonesia about the venue's location and budget.
  2. Liang&Reke: create doodle survey for next meetup & find out the budget for traveling to Philippines or Indonesia from Taiwan.
  3. Josh: read and edit the section of SEA&CJK_Wikimedia_Workshop#Plan & invite more SEA + East Asia countries Wikimedians to join.

exchanging the idea for SEA + CJK meeting
  • SEA&CJK_Wikimedia_Workshop
  • Date: tentatively late March? Hopefully before the 2015 Wikimedia Conference (in Switzerland?) so that the SEA&CJK can bring some important updates and information to the conference.
  • Venue: For now we're considering Jogjakarta, Indonesia as we the Javanese Wikipedians community has agreed to collaborate and possibly host the event, in which Jogjakarta is one of the center cities for Javanese community. Plus it is known that the cost for lodging and transport in Jogjakarta is relatively low in comparison to other cities in Indonesia. Possible venue candidate http://griyayunika.com/ (Ichsan will survey the prices and inform everyone on the next skype meeting).
  • Program - it's better to brainstorm on the agenda in order to cross-check whether the venue can acccommodate (e.g. internet in Jogjakarta- maybe not good enough for skype/conf call)
  • Funding: How should we fund it? From WMF?
  • Proposed goals for the events: (but since the workshop might be limited to two days only, we'll need to focus and pick the best suited topics to be discussed, which we'll do it by voting, possibly using google form)
    • share the open knowledge challenge and advantage in Asia
    • best case sharing about increasing Wikimedia Projects
    • Language collaboration
    • How to get funding for the projects
    • How to get volunteers
    • How to work with other organization that willing to share the Open Knowledge
    • Train the trainers
    • Show us the DIY scanner
    • How to write proposal

Literally, Hamengku = put/hold someone/something on one's lap, and buwono = the world.
