editI was invited to give a presentation about building up an Arts database in Asia on Wikipedia, along with Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons in g0v summit 2016, which took place in Academia Sinica, Taipei, on 13 and 14 May 2016. This presentation aimed to introduce the importance of having the database in Asia, and also how we can do it on Wikipedia.
First of all, it is important for us to build up the database, as it can promote the artwork in Asia to all over the world, also preserve the artwork in Asia. Meanwhile, it can build the open trusted source for Asian cultural heritage content and make the resources available to users wherever they are, whenever they want it.
Wikipedia is an ideal platform to establish the database, as it is not owned by a particular institution, and everyone can edit on Wikipedia, which means that the descriptions about the artworks would be neutral, by combining the edits from different editors. Also, Wikipedia is very easy for people to et access.
The presentation was quite successful and the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan would like to cooperate with us in order to establish the database. There are some details we need to negotiate, and we are happy with the responses from the audience.
