Monuments on Wikidata

The Monuments database, which is the base of the Wiki Loves Monuments competitions, contains information about thousands of cultural heritage monuments all around the world. Many of them do not yet Wikidata items! We are working to bridge this gap, by importing this data into Wikidata. This work not only makes Wikidata more complete, enriching it with information that was previously only accessible in the local Wikipedia versions, but is also a prerequisite for adding structured data depicts (P180) statements to the photos.

In August 2022, we supported the organizers of the first edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Suriname with cleaning up and updating the Wikidata items of the country's monuments.

The work of the hub with monuments on Wikidata started in September 2021. Below you can see an overview of the countries we have worked on so far.

Database of built cultural heritage information

We are continuing the work we did as part of Connected Open Heritage to build a database of built cultural heritage data sources and Wikimedia activity in each country.

Structured Data on Commons: Wiki Loves Monuments and Earth

We are adding structured data to files on Wikimedia Commons, focusing on photos from the Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth competitions around the world. Here's an overview of the countries we've been working on so far.

We are adding depicts (P180) and location of creation (P1071) statements based on the content of the relevant monument template for each country, attempting to match the code to a Wikidata item.

participant in (P1344) statements are added to tag every photo with the local and global competition it participated in. The local editions get their own Wikidata items – see this Listeria list to see which countries have been covered.

The work started in September 2021, following a pilot project done earlier that year.
