ISA Tool

ISA enables users to quickly add structured data to files on Wikimedia Commons. The tool aims at making the SDC editing process easy and fun. As it is built to work well on smartphones the tool helps to lower the threshold for new contributors in areas where not everybody has easy access to a laptop. Through campaigns the tool help the user to discover the value of SDC in an approachable environment.

Development Plan

ISA is suffering from a number of issues as the result of lacking maintenance. Some of these are serious enough that the tool risks being shut down. We will fix the most pressing of these to make sure it can still be used and to prevent similar things in the future.

Image to Concept

The aim of this project is to give users the option to select depict statements from an automatically generated list. A service (Metadata-to-concept) is developed that takes metadata about an image and makes a list of Wikidata items. The work on ISA concerns integrating with the service so that it can show the suggestions and send any selections on to Commons.

As part of the project there will be some user testing. To make sure these go well some issues that are not part of the core functionality for the project. In particular additions made to the UI should not negatively impact use of the tool, whether the new features are used or not.

2022-02-18	ISA was added to Hay's tools, thanks to User:Spinster.
2022-02-03	Added ISA to Toolhub.
2022-02-03	Campaigns participate page loads faster. Most campaigns loads in a few seconds. Larger ones (100,000+ images) can still take about a minute to load.
2021-12-13	ISA added to Tanslatewiki, thanks to APatro (WMF).
2021-11-17	Fixed security issues on Toolforge.
2021-08-31	Planning meeting with Anthere. Discussed how to continue development and what issues were prioritised.
