Code for Africa Climate Change Project/Programme

Bridging The Gap:
Using Wikipedia To Fight Climate Denialism
HomeProgrammeParticipationArticlesBlogFriendly Space PolicyFeedback

To bridge the content gap in climate change and its related activities, Code for Africa will spearhead the mentoring of the first cohort of Wikipedian-In-Residence fellows, who will champion activities related to climate denialism and delaysm. The Wikipedians-in-Residence will be change-makers for growing the local community of volunteer Wikipedia editors and contributors, by organising events, and facilitating technical training. The fellows will help pioneer new ways for the wider African Wikipedia community to mobilise and tackle issues such as climate denialism or delayism and related mis/disinformation. Fellows will be assigned to mentors who will guide them throughout the fellowship process in other to champion activities like Edit-a-thons or Debunk-a-thons in their respective communities.

The fellows will also be working with communities of volunteers in their respective countries.

Support edit

This fellowship is stipend-based. WiRs will be supported with a monthly stipend and receive hands-on technical training, followed by one-on-one mentorship. Also, selected contributors/volunteers will be involved in honorary and non-compensated capacities to support Wikipedia editing, research, and uploading of climate-related information on a weekly basis. Contributors will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the campaign, depending on their level of engagement. The WiRs and contributors will also be added to CfA’s Slack channel for future opportunities after the campaign period elapses.
