Description - Wiki Loves Folklore is an international Photography contest held on Wikimedia Commons from 1st February till 31st March. The main motive of the project is to gather media from all round the globe so that it could be used on Wikipedia and other sites on the internet under free licence. These images are unique and the project aims to represent and document Intangible Heritage Culture. Wiki Loves Folklore campaign is designed in a dual structure. We have national coordinators and International Team. The role of national coordinators or country organisers is to organize Wiki Loves Folklore in a specific country and the role of International Team also includes to organize Wiki Loves Folklore in countries where there are no national coordinators. Thereby representing the underrepresented Countries under the Wikimedia ecosystem. This year we have specially crafted local banner images which have images of that country which has a national organiser so that it encourages local participation from a country. And the international Banner image to display winning and featured images during the contest. Since this is our 5th Year anniversary and this year we also celebrate 20th anniversary of UN convention on Intangible Culture Heritage we would like to target more reach and awareness as well as participation through the Central Notice.

  • @Tiven2240: Hey, it's very uncommon for an international project to ask for individual banners per country. Each country would require an individual campaign (and banner). This would mean work for about 20 campaigns in this request. Of course, we can take people by languages to the different landing pages. However, this is not possible per country within one banner. As of now, the status of many of the landing pages is very different: some barely exist. We wouldn't create campaigns for these right now. Please check back with the international team how you want to proceed. I can help you with the creation but likely not with these many. Please ping me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:24, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @DerHexer thank you for your comments. We have one global banner image ready for the banner File:WLF2023Banner.png. We will coordinate with the country organisers to create the landing page and i am sure they will be ready very soon. Also meanwhile can you share me the translation link of the text of the central notice banner so that we can share it for translation. --Tiven2240 (talk) 18:45, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tiven2240: Just to be clear again: We will create only one campaign with one banner and photo (which leads to multiple landing pages), as it was done in 2022. We cannot use multiple country-related photos in one campaign. If you agree with that, I can create the campaign where the translation link will also be created then (therefore, I cannot provide a link for translation yet). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:16, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @DerHexer kindly help us with creation of two campaigns. One for the signed up language countries and another for the non signed up language countries. Thank you --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:46, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Tiven2240: I've created a campaign, banner, preview for the non-signed up language countries. For that purpose, I cloned the 2022 banner which already has some translations available from Wiki Loves Love 2020 (I don't know why you have used that); if need be, I can make a newly translatable text available. This leads to c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023.
I've also created a campaign, banner, preview for all the signed up language countries. As said, it's not possible to use a country-specific banner under these circumstances; therefore I re-used the general banner. Please provide a landing page for all these signed up language countries; temporarily, I've linked it to c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023/Organize. Same issue with text messages here: it re-uses the WLL texts; if need be, I can also enable newly translatable texts here.
Please let me know when both campaigns can be activated. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:57, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DerHexer: and @Tiven2240:, we are organizing the national contest in Nigeria, and we will like the CN Banner linked to our landing page. See Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Nigeria. Thank you. T CellsTalk 14:06, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@T Cells: Unfortunately, we cannot adjust the banner per country (only by language). For each of them, a new campaign would have to be created which is not feasible for the number of participating countries and the limitations of CentralNotice (campaigns cannot be copied but have to be created manually; the number of active CN admins is extremely low: just a handful). For that reason, I had proposed a joint landing page for the signed up countries which the orga committee didn't want. Therefore, I can offer you to add links to the Nigerian landing page from igwiki and yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata when users have ig or yo settings enabled). That's an easy hack which I can also do for other languages. Would that work for you? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:58, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @User:DerHexer, I apologize for missing this message. Considering the limitations you highlighted above, let's add a link to the Nigerian landing page from yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata). How should the link be added? T CellsTalk 09:35, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@T Cells: I've implemented that as proposed. Please check this preview if it works as intended. @Tiven2240: I can do the same hacks for other languages (but not countries). I've already implemented a switch so that I can add other language codes and landing pages more easily. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:28, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @User:DerHexer, that works. T CellsTalk 18:29, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Countries were updated. —DerHexer (Talk) 14:34, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you @DerHexer --Tiven2240 (talk) 19:26, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi @User:DerHexer, the banner displayed on Commons, Wikidata and Meta is not linked to our landing page at c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Nigeria . Please help us link it to our landing page. Thank you for your help. Happy new month. T CellsTalk 08:11, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@T Cells: Please re-read my message: “Unfortunately, we cannot adjust the banner per country (only by language). For each of them, a new campaign would have to be created which is not feasible for the number of participating countries and the limitations of CentralNotice […] Therefore, I can offer you to add links to the Nigerian landing page from igwiki and yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata when users have ig or yo settings enabled).” Do you have ig or yo setting on those wikis mentioned, or English? In any other setting than ig or yo, people will be forwarded to the general landing page as said. If there's a bug with the multi-language forward, this would require professional developer ressources. I can only offer what I can offer. If it sticks to one more campaign, just for Nigeria, I might find some time today or tomorrow to create it. But I cannot promise it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:58, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the additional clarification @User:DerHexer. I apologise for my earliest misunderstanding. Regards. T CellsTalk 10:28, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! :) Thank you for your understanding. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:33, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I have removed the reoccurring cycle for the not-participating countries banner. There is no need to show it every week on all projects in all languages: it only causes annoyance and will impact the banner experience for the banners on events that these targeted projects do have a local team in. I hope this is okay. It will still be shown 5 times to all, so creating awareness for the initiative (which I assume is the goal of the banner for countries/languages without a local team) is still in place. Ciell (talk) 11:29, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell can you please explain us why was this sudden decision taken by you in between of the contest? We could have discussed before any changes. --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:22, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to try and clarify @Tiven2240. To be clear: I have not turned it off, but only lowered the diet of this specific banner. The banner has been running for almost a month and daily visitors of the projects have seen 20 impressions, more if they have visited more than one project in these past weeks. There are a lot of banners lined up to start in March, and by lowering the diet of this banner for not-participating countries, those banners get more room. Sadly, we only have one banner space for all to use: we have to share and also be considerate to not lose the effect of banners in general.
I hope this helps, more in general about why we cannot show banners all the time is explained in this question of the CentralNotice Banner FAQ. Ciell (talk) 20:45, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
