Central Notice admin comments
editI can help, BUT since this is a request for a local campaign (only for Spanish Wikipedia), a local Mediawiki:Sitenotice would be more suitable than a CentralNotice, and the advantage is that Sitenotices are controlled by your local admins on the Spanish Wikipedia - no need for coordination through Meta! See here and here for a more information. Ciell (talk) 13:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- What I don't understand is that since 2015 it has been an inactive page on Wikipedia in Spanish, and many local campaigns have happened, and now you're telling us to do it through sitenotice? This scenario is much more complicated, because there is no guide on how to do it on eswiki. I feel like we are not being helped... MiguelAlanCS (talk) 14:04, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- We need help here @Vermont:, @MarcoAurelio: MiguelAlanCS (talk) 14:13, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @MiguelAlanCS,
- no need to panic please, it's not June 1st yet.
- You mention this banner has been run through CN/Meta several years now, but I can't find similar requests in the archives. It would be helpful if you can link me one of the previous requests, so I can have a look at how it was setup back then. In general, I am not the best CN admin to ask for 'creative' banners like this one, but maybe I can copy-cat something from previous editions.
- And I do not mean to turn your request down, it's just that I am getting concerns here on Meta from you and also via Telegram, while actually the Mediawiki-interface allows local admins (=56 admins on eswp) to create and run a banner on your local wiki, which is often way easier than having to coordinate through Meta, and depending on a small bunch of Meta volunteers' availability. Ciell (talk) 15:37, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
(It is our first request. And it seems to be very difficult when the requests of other groups are quickly attended to. I don't know why our application is so complicated. We will try it locally, since I see little collaboration here. It's very frustrating.) MiguelAlanCS (talk) 15:50, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi!, the issue is that the MediaWiki:Sitenotice on Wikipedia in Spanish has been in disuse since in eswiki because there is a belief that centralnotice conflicts with our sitenotice. If you confirm this is not the case, we can ask an admin to activate it. Could you point to code/set up they might use as example, please? LuisCG11 (talk) 16:24, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

- Sorry to read your frustration @MiguelAlanCS - again, I can help if you'd like me to. The thing is, that images don't scale well in the CentralNotice so I'll need a 'bare' design to set up the banner. More information about this is in the CN FAQ here: CentralNotice/FAQ#Requesting_a_Central_Notice_banner_on_Meta and the following section CentralNotice/FAQ#Which_information_will_I_need_to_provide?. Banner are not simply wikicode, but need a decent HTML/CSS design, and this means that either the banner has to be designed by a fellow Wikimedian, or any CN admin that has time to attend to your request. I am again very sorry to disappoint.
- @LuisCG11 when there is a CN banner active, the Sitenotice will be shown underneath it. It is visually not that great, but they technically don't interfere with anything. Most CN banners are turned on with a 'diet' (limiting the number of times you see them) while a Sitenotice just runs until an admin turns it off again. Mediawiki manual for site notice is here, and the sitenotice is set up in wiki-code. Have a look through the version in the sitenotice' history for some examples. To push a new Sitenotice to be visible, simply increase the Sitenotice id by one point and all that have closed the sitenotice in the past will see it again. Same goes for es:wp:MediaWiki:Anonnotice, but for not-logged in users. When this one is empty, it will show the content of the sitenotice (if any), so be aware.
- Looking at their contributions, several of the admins in the history of the pages are still active and I am sure they can lend you a quick hand.
- Now, getting back to this banner:
- Again, I can set this up for you, but single image banners don't scale on mobile and other devices, so let's not do that to avoid angry Wikimedians. Please allow me to create a simple but decent banner for you, and for this I would need: 1) a single image (with not to many complicated lines, will be shown at 55px), 2) one or two lines of text (max 50-70 characters), and 3) the landing page. Ciell (talk) 16:54, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Since I was pinged, I'd also add for future awareness that the text should be actual text, not part of an image. Otherwise screen readers would have difficulty parsing it (and wouldn't be translatable if it's for more than one language).
- Agreed that the line of flags is an issue - on mobile, something that wide really wouldn't scale well. Maybe pick two pairs of flags, and have one on the left of the text and the other on the right (and text in between)?
- Imo, a CentralNotice banner is fine - SiteNotice is old and mostly unused across projects, and though it's technically easier for local admins to setup, it doesn't have a lot of the customizability and targeting that CN does. Vermont (🐿️—🏳️🌈) 17:06, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @Ciell and @Vermont. First of all, thank you for taking the time to review the request. I designed the banner together with @ElleAnónime and I have a few comments to make as to how we thought it should be displayed. The idea is not that the svg image above would take the whole width of the banner. It should be placed in the middle, and the width could be easily be made reliably responsive, for example, through the use of the
min()
function as inwidth: min(1000px, 95%);
, or through the use of themax-width
property as inmax-width: 1000px; width: 95%;
. This, way, it wouldn't be overstretched in bigger screens and it would take the whole width (with some margin) in phone screens. The image can be easily centered within the banner by usingmargin-inline: auto;
or by making the parent element a flexbox and using thejustify-content
property. Sorry that I wrote it down here but I am unable to preview banners, which makes it difficult to work with. As to the text being part of an image, wouldn't screen readers be able to interpret it through thealt
attribute? If you still think the image is inadequate after my explanation above, please ping me and I will work on a simpler solution as you suggested. Again, thanks for your time. Nacaru · Talk ✉ 21:23, 30 May 2024 (UTC)- Hi @Nacaru,
- Because CentralNotice is a very powerful tool I am personally hesitant to try out things, especially in a short time frame like this. Maybe @Vermont would be open to try? Ciell (talk) 02:18, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Nacaru,
- Out of the interest of time, I created this one that can go live tomorrow. I can change the text, either of the two images, or the background colour if you'd prefer to have them different: I could not find the source for the different flags you used in your image, and just randomly picked a colour from your landing page to make the banner stand out more. Happy to change to what you prefer. Ciell (talk) 09:13, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks for the update; just ping me when you are ready for me to update the banner. Ciell (talk) 11:06, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, again, @Ciell (also pinging @Vermont just in case). Thanks for offering a solution. Sorry for the delay, we've been discussing and crafting a new banner. In the end, we've decided we would like to follow the structure you suggested, but having this image on the left and this other one (please use the 200x240 pixels resolution as it's lighter, it's the one on the link) on the right. However, I have noticed that, in the preview of your suggestion, the images can look a bit stretched. In order to avoid this and respect the aspect-ratio, the declaration
object-fit: contain;
must be applied to bothimg
elements. Additionally, if you could make the width responsive by applying thewidth: min(1000px, 95%);
andmargin-inline: auto;
to the parent element (the element with anid
ofcnotice-main
), the elements inside it would appear closer together in wider screens. I have uploaded two examples to show you what it would look like: here and here. However, if you don't feel comfortable applying the latter, I would understand; but please give priority to making sure the aspect-ratio of the images is adequate. I will be paying attention to notifications throughout the day so please let me know through ping if you need any additional feedback or help. Nacaru · Talk ✉ 15:03, 31 May 2024 (UTC)- I like what you did there, Nacaru! Let me grab some dinner and then see if I can recreate it with your directions. I should be back within the hour. - @Nacaru please check the preview again, I think this is the best I can do for today: [1]. Ciell (talk) 18:31, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Ciell, that's good! aspect-ratio is definitely preserved. I think we can launch it like that. Nacaru · Talk ✉ 18:36, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- It helps to have square images as well. ;-)
- Great, let me set up the campaign now. Ciell (talk) 18:46, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Nacaru the campaign for logged in users is now here, and the banner code is here btw. I am trying to be mindful that, according to the Banner calendar (please add your campaign there!), the annual fundraiser banners will go live in Spain in three days, and there is a community survey banner up for Mexico in the same period as you are requesting. The logged in campaign will show 5 times/3 days, a separate campaign for not-logged in users will show 2 times/5 days. The latter has Spain included for now, but I'll need to remove that somewhere this weekend to allow room for the fundraiser banner, as fundraiser banners have priority.
- Please check, and if all is okay, I can enable them both to go live at midnight UTC. Ciell (talk) 19:14, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Ciell! I worked on the first banner along with @Nacaru and I have a couple questions. In which countries will our banner be shown? And would it be possible to show it during the whole month of June? That's the period our contest will be active. Thank you for your time and help with the whole process! ElleAnónime (talk) 19:23, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @ElleAnónime, you can see in the campaigns I have linked in my comment above which countries they will target (campaign=technical settings, banner=visual presentation). The banner for logged-in is world-wide, for all logged-in users that visit Wikipedia and have Spanish as their preferred language setting. The second one for anon/not logged-in users is only shown to visitors from the Ibero-American countries (the way they are mentioned in the details from this request, way in the top of this page), who visit Wikipedia and have Spanish as their preferred language setting.
- As to your second question, stretching the banner period to the end of June: I think yes for the logged-in banner, I would not like to do this with the anon-banner. We need this banner space to be empty more often, to have a good effect of our fundraiser banners (also see: en:Banner blindness).
- Does that make sense to you? Ciell (talk) 19:37, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking the time to explain it!! This is the very first time we've done something like this. Showing it until the end of June just for logged-in users would be great, thank you!! ElleAnónime (talk) 20:08, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Always happy to help!!
- I just need a final sign off on the campaign and banner from @Nacaru or @LuisCG11 to enable the banners. I am going offline soon, and otherwise will check back when I wake up tomorrow. Ciell (talk) 20:37, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
