Banner/Campaign Diet:

  • To be determined by Central Notice admin

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign? edit

Description - On July 5th there will be a key vote for the copyright reform in the European union. The question is whether to give a mandate to the JURI commission, the one that took the most worrying positions so far, to negotiate in a trilogue (one of the less transparent procedures of the EU) on behalf of the whole European parliament. If the parliament approves this, hopes to get rid of dangerous proposals like content filtering and ancillary rights for publishers, and to introduce positive amendments like freedom of panorama, will be really low.

Metrics - The key result we want to achieve is a vote against the mandate in the European parliament.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page? edit

Banners - A design like the old SOPA banner would do. The text can be similar to the landing page:
  • fist line:
    • (Italian) La conoscenza ha bisogno di un copyright moderno e una rete aperta
    • (English) Knowledge needs a modern copyright and a free Web
  • second line (smaller font than the first line; e.g., 0.9em if the first one is 1.3em like in the SOPA banner):
    • (Italian) Una proposta di direttiva dell'Unione europea sul diritto d'autore minaccia il nostro diritto fondamentale a condividere liberamente la conoscenza
    • (English) A proposed copyright directive in the European union is threatening our basic right to freely share knowledge

Landing Page - Special:MyLanguage/EU policy/European Parliament vote in 2018

Discussion edit

The idea of a banner has been discussed on Italian Wikipedia on w:it:Wikipedia:Bar/Discussioni/L'Unione Europea, il copyright e il sapere libero, with strong consensus.

Since the vote is on July 5th, this needs to be done really fast - not later than Monday morning.

The proposal is to have it shown not only in Italy, but also target Italian language in Belgium, Luxembourg and France because EU officers are there. - Laurentius (talk) 08:30, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • The banner should be on sister projects too: I saw positive comments at least from Wikinews, Wikiversity and Wikibooks users and there's wide consensus for Wikiquote at q:it:Special:PermaLink/938016#Oscuriamo_Wikiquote?. Consequently, please avoid Wikipedia logos [1]. --Nemo 07:06, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rewording to make the text a bit clearer: "A tutti i nostri lettori in Italia: abbiamo bisogno del tuo aiuto per mantenere la Rete aperta. Chiedi ai deputati del Parlamento europeo di sostenere la creatività e la conoscenza libera. Chiedi che il 5 luglio respingano la proposta di direttiva sul copyright per consentire un dibattito democratico." - Laurentius (talk)

At the end of the business day offices will close and we should change the message (not asking for phone calls). Alternative proposal for the night:

Difendiamo una rete aperta
La proposta di direttiva sul diritto d'autore mette a repentaglio i valori, la cultura e l'ecosistema da cui Wikipedia dipende. Il 5 luglio chiediamo a tutti i deputati del Parlamento europeo di votare contro e consentire un dibattito democratico.
