Afrosports 2024

The AfroSports contest is an annual contest targeted at increasing the information about African sports, games and recreational activities available on the various Wikimedia projects.

The contest will be held from March 15th – April 30th 2024.

All participants must have Wikimedia accounts
Articles must be in the mainspace by the end of the competition period. Contestants are welcome to work on articles in AFC, draft space, their sandboxes or off-wiki in advance but the new articles have to be in the mainspace during the duration of the contest.
The minimum requirement of readable prose for new articles is 1000 characters or 1 kB. Though this is still a stub, as long as the articles have a number of sourced facts this is permitted. Try to make the articles at least 1500 characters or 1.5kB and effectively start class entries if there are plenty of sources. The minimum requirement is intended more for those developing major biographies where subjects might be notable but suffer from a lack of sources due to the infrastructure of the countries.
All entries are expected to be fully sourced, with no unsourced claims. Try to make the formatting consistent with dates and layout; clean, useful new entries are what the contest is about.
It is important that before starting new entries, especially on the English Wikipedia, you take the time to ensure that articles meet Wikipedia:Notability guidelines and have the adequate coverage in Wikipedia:Reliable sources needed to be acceptable on Wikipedia. We don't want the contest to generate non-notable articles or cause WP:BLP issues. Leading up to the start of the contest, there will be recognition for editors who help build and refine the Article Suggestions lists for the contest with articles which are notable and make it easier for editors to select suitable articles during the contest.
Take extra care to avoid paraphrasing and copyright. While producing a lot of content, it is sometimes difficult to avoid sentences which do not resemble something in a source but it is important that the articles are without problems and will stick around on Wikipedia for a long time. If editors are found to create successive articles with paraphrasing or quality issues or of dubious notability and continue to do so after being alerted of a problem, they may be disqualified from further contributing to the contest. It is very important that care is taken to avoid copyright issues and ensure that articles meet notability and content requirements because if they don't, they may cause a potential nightmare for the contest and editors at a later date.
No automated, semi-automated tools, scripts or manual templates to mass generate content are permitted for the contest. Any indication that editors are cheating by using a cookie-cutter template or script to mass-generate through lists may lead to disqualification.
Malicious edits can lead to disqualification from the contest – this includes mass translation of articles from English Wikipedia to any other language Wikipedia without editing the articles to make sure they meet Wikipedia's standards. It also includes creating multiple unsourced 1- or 2-line articles.

Languages edit

This contest aims to bridge the content gap on Wikipedia by writing articles about the historical and contemporary African Sports Scene focusing on the English Wikipedia and 5 African languages; Wikipedia (Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Swahili and Kinyarwanda.)

Prizes edit

At the end of the contest, 6 winners will be selected based on criteria outlined in the Jury Process and the rewards will be in the form of gift vouchers.

Jury Process edit

To ensure transparency and fairness, scoring in this competition will be quantitative, keeping in mind that all articles must meet Wikipedia standards for notability, quality and sourcing, as described in the contest rules section of this article. Any article may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion.

The scoring system for the winners would be as follows:

Two points (2) would be awarded for every new Wikipedia article in any African language (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Swahili and Kinyarwanda).
One and half points (1.5) would be awarded for every new Wikipedia article in the English language.
One point (1.0) would be awarded for every newly created article about Female athletes in English or any of the African language Wikipedias.
Half point (.5) would be awarded for every picture used in an article.
