Translating the VE

Hi Pat, thanks for your work so far on the Visual Editor localisation page. I just thought I'd mention that you might want to suggest to people that they can translate the VisualEditor interface itself through translatewiki.net. Also, will you also be marking pages for translation as part of your work? TheHelpfulOne to the rescue! Very good suggestion about linking translatewiki.net, I'll put that in. The portal pages are a bit rough still; going to be doing more refining over the next couple days. I really want it to be a useful tool/set of pages for people with translation skills. As for Marking for Translation, yes. Any help figuring out the translation extension would be much appreciated. Hello Patrick! I saw that you just updated IN due to the global renames/SUL-finalisation. However, I think not all fixes you did are correct. For example you changed Adrien to Adrien~metawiki, however, to the noticeboard not the now meta-Adrien was added but the Adrien from skwiki, who is now Adrien~skwiki, see here. I'm not sure, but I guess what you've done didn't actually updated the page or improved it. I only reviewed that one user now and not the other's you've changed. It might be useful to double or triple check everything again. In doubt I'd recommend to remove users from the board and have them re-identify, but that is all up to you/staff. On that occasion, it might be useful to generally check whether people have been renamed over the years which has probably not been noted on IN. Regards, -Barras talk 17:26, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store. Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

Use timestamp with MassMessage

Hello! It seems that you have used the mass message system without adding a timestamp to your message (Harassment consultation). I'm not sure how to do that but this is just a reminder for the future. Some pages are automatically archived by bots, and they need valid timestamps to operate correctly. Aptarimas:Jonathan Hill

Hi @PEarley (WMF):

I saw you recently posted a message on behalf of the WMF to Lithuanian Wiki (Hugo.arg) so you may well know who to contact to resolve the following impasse.

On 26 November 2015 I was blocked from contributing to Lithuanian Wiki for five (5) years! To any casual observer this would no doubt make out that I must have committed a most dreadful crime, but I haven't, & what is more is that Homo has also blocked me from editing any part of Lithuanian Wiki, including making a representation as to why I believe this to be wholly unfair, unreasonable, etc, etc.

To give you the very brief gist of what might have caused this rush of blood, please see Aptarimas:Jonathan Hill, wherein you will note that I have simply been trying to enhance Wikipedia, in this case by adding to Lithuanian Wikipedia biographical details of a current EU Commissioner (Lithuania being an EU member state), namely, Jonathan Hill.

I am pretty sure that this escapade completely contravenes almost all of Wikipedia's principles including about co-operation, but surely the suppression of info about a notable living person who has relevance to Lithuanians in every day life can't be allowed to continue? When I recently contributed an article to Lithuanian Wiki about the Order of the British Empire no such problems arose (which somewhat deflates their only cited line of argument about my Lithuanian grammar being rubbish, and in any event I accept that my Lithuanian is no good, but there should exist on Lithuanian Wiki the spirit of co-operation (& so thinks the Lithuanian Embassy in London)).

We all wish that Lithuanian Wiki continues to expand and provide good information, and that its volunteers need to be kept onside, but such cavalier use of Admin authority can surely not be of much help to the cause. Also it is does not chime with the replies given to the Tell us about Lithuanian Wikipedia questionnaire. (If Lithuanian Admins are not open-minded to and welcoming of new information, particularly info about important living people (whether or not they agree with their particular politics), it calls into question how neutral are its articles (& Admins) and is there anything else we should know about that has been suppressed?)

Given that presently I am obstructed from contacting any Lithuanian Wiki Admins by the customary processes, could you advise me who to contact so as to be unblocked without further delay? (NB. their Admins are cc'd here) The Lithuanian Embassy in London is helping to remedy this situation by providing me with an improved Lithuanian text about Jonathan Hill so that I can restore info about him to Lithuanian Wiki's pages, if permitted!

I am hardly a regular on Lithuanian Wiki, so why should this have been made so much more difficult than it needs to be?

As a Foundation employee, I can't advise on the specific issue - content disputes and user conduct issues (except in very extreme cases) are handled by community processes. However, I can advise on the common ways a user can seek help when in a dispute. As you are blocked on the Lithuanian project, you can use this site, Meta, to get more opinions on your block if you desire. There is the general Help Forum. Survey data

Don't know if my comments aren't being read, are ignored as mere criticism, or ignored because the team has trouble believing they made a mistake in interpreting the data from the "types of harassment experienced" question. User:Mdennis (WMF) told me to ask you, so I'll try to make my point here a final time:

• For the question asking how many times people experienced each type of harassment, people could enter values between 0 and 100. "0" means they did NOT experience that type of harassment.
• The first two days of the survey people had to answer each of the ten items, they couldn't skip the types they did not experience. So there should be a lot of zero values in the data.
• the raw data (p.6) lists five numbers per harassment type:

Minimum (0.00); maximum (100.00); average ; standard deviation; responses.

• The key question: what do the numbers in column "responses" represent? It's either the total number of responses, or it's the number of people who experienced that type of harassment (1 or more times), in other words: the number of responses with values equal to or greater than 1.
• The raw data for the other questions always contains the total number of responses. Either this is the only question where that number is missing, or the numbers in column "responses" are these totals, and therefor also include responses where users gave "0" (zero) as answer.
• The numbers in the responses column correspond exactly with the percentages in the report. So at least the writers of the report thought they represented the number of answers with values equal to or greater than 1.
• In two cases (hacking and revenge porn), it can be mathematically proven that the data can not represent a distribution of values between 1 and 100: from the average and the minimum and maximum (1 and 100), we can calculate a maximum value for the variance (the Bhatia-Davis inequality), the square root of which gives a maximum value for the standard deviation. The listed standard deviation is in both cases greater than the maximum possible for such a distribution. Conclusion: values less than 1 must be present, the listed data does not represent the answers by people who experienced the type of harassment, it represents all the responses given, including those of people who entered "0" (zero). And the same is true for the percentages in the report.

I can see no other possibility, and it explains all the anomalies present in the data, like the lack of variance between the 5 least prevalent types (all within 64% + or - 3%); the discrepancy between the numbers for experienced and witnessed types of haressment, and the overrepresentation of extreme cases. The qualtrics website mentions that all survey data can be downloaded in table form, with all answers by each participant, so it should be easy to verify. Delivery message

Hello! I just wanted to notice a little bug in the mass delivery of a recent message (es.source). The bug is the signature: it added the code -~~~~ instead of the signature, so the next edition could have replaced the code with a user signature. I have also noticed another recent bug in mass delivery at User_talk:Johan_(WMF)#Delivery_Tech_News:_2016-10. Perhaps mediawiki substring function has changed its behaviour. Removal of category

Dear PEarly, for the time being I do not see a reason for disconnecting my proposal (sorry, I could not convert it to an internal link) from the intended category. Of course, I am open to any argumentation, and meanwhile, I amended my proposal a bit to make it stronger connected to the topic of harassment.

I took the freedom to revert your edit, and I do see both of the actions under discussion as potentially "harassing", but strictly cling to my opinion of these not being triggering any alarms.

Hi Purgy Purgatorio, I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a note about this. The main reason I made that edit was that, while this campaign has already brought in many interesting proposals for projects or grants, some do not meet the requirements for IdeaLab. This campaign is not a forum or discussion area, rather a place to develop fundable projects for the benefit of the Wikimedia movement. Our projects have many places for "meta" level discussion of issues which you are welcome to use, there is even a page as part of this campaign for that purpose. If you would like to reframe your idea into something with more concrete outcomes, or a specific idea for change, we can discuss re-including it. I see from this edit that you feel this is not a fundable idea, so I am a bit confused as to why you feel it should remain as part of the campaign? Nevertheless, I am not willing to give in that easily, and give it a shot to at least resolve your confusion, and initiate that you re-consider your, imho unduly biased, act of bureaucratic absolute power of removing a suggestion, presented in a form fully de rigeur, especially targeted to this very topic, from the top of the leaderboard to oblivion.

• This action is inappropriate insofar as there would be many other, not removed suggestions, which do not meet the requirements for IdeaLab, at least to a comparable extent.
• This action is inappropriate as the suggestion is not targeted to initiate a discussion, but to concrete measures of changing the relevant gauges for triggering action against harassment.
• This action is inappropriate as it censors a suggestion, which is endorsed to a level significantly above average, not withstanding my aversion against general public voting.
  

In the shade of the above I will revert your discriminating censorship, in the service of the untouchable PC, in the name of inalienable human rights, especially of free speech, for one single occasion, and will add to the grants section, so this is not turned against me again.

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

You can find more information in the final report for the grant.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.

On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.

Wikisite, a question on terminology

I am updating translation and noticed you are using ウィキサイト for Wikimedia Sites as in this page. My hunch is that putting them as _wikisite_ will not fit as the page topic is Policy, or we need to clarify it’s not about general sites applying wiki format, and what do you think? Some UCoC history

I'm trying to discern the meaning of the phrase "This includes imposing schemes on content intended to marginalize or ostracize" in the UCoC. I've been looking at the history of the text, and it appears first in this edit first as "or to impose an arbitrary scheme on content", but is subsequently revised in this edit It seems that the deliberations of the drafting committee are not public, and my understanding of the history of the committee is that you were not part the deliberations. Hey Vexations. My understanding of that item was that it is meant to discourage abuse of categories, templates (e.g. navboxes or the like) or naming conventions to negatively frame people or groups. Similar to en.wiki's guidelines on categories here or this guidance in the BLP policy. But perhaps it needs more clarity and/or examples .... Patrick Earley (WMF) (talk) 19:46, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, I think I see what you mean. A class of antisocial behaviors of false attribution where the abuser assigns a quality (attribute or property) to a target that it doesn't have. That would include abuse such as deliberate misgendering or assigning a value to the religion property of non-religious person. I don't think that's really obvious to everyone. Hi,

I've noticed you are planning a banner campaign for the UCoC ratification vote. As you can see however, there are already several global campaigns planned for the same period: Wiki loves Folklore, Wiki Loves Africa and multiple campaigns around International Women's Day/International Women's Month. Please consider postponing the campaign for a week, or a bit more: the WLF and WLA campaigns will end on the 15th and the main date for International Women is March 8th.
