Writing Rivers History in Wikipedia

The project is organized to address the Wikimedia knowledge gaps, with specific focus on content and contributor gaps in Wikipedia by improving River State (of Nigeria) related articles in Wikipedia. The project aim to document information about the Rivers people in Wikipedia by creating new Rivers-related articles and expanding existing underdeveloped articles in Wikipedia. It is goal of the project team to, through this project, reduce the systemic bias in Wikipedia.

Action Point

  • Create awareness about Wikipedia among Rivers People and the academic community at the University of Port Harcourt.
  • Teach participants to edit and improve Wikipedia articles.
  • Train participants to create new Wikipedia articles.
  • Recruit more volunteers for the Wikimedia community in Rivers State.
  • organize series of online and in-person Write-a-thons to help improve Rivers state related content in Wikipedia.

Eligibility

The training and write-a-thon is open to both experienced and new editors within and outside of Rivers State. However, specific attention will be given to staff and students of the History and Diplomatic Studies Department at University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

How to Participate

  1. Sign in or Account Create a New Account on Wikipedia.
  2. Enroll on the Outreach Dashboard to track your contributions
  3. Sign up in the participants section on this page.
  4. Attend the online and/or in-person trainings/orientation in the first week of April, 2023
  5. Create or expand Wikipedia articles relating to Rivers State.
