CIS-A2K/Events/Women TTT 2019

(Redirected from Women TTT 2019)

Skill-building activities and initiatives play a very crucial role to empower Wikimedia communities and based on the first initiative to cumulatively organise an event entirely by women for women, it has been realised that there should be one training event exclusively for women where they can discuss the issues women editors face and their probable solutions. The thought is based on the discussions between the women editors participating in the WWWW event and their learnings. In the past CIS-A2K has conducted and supported several skill-building initiatives, but no women-centric activity or training has been planned to date.

Objectives edit

Based on an internal needs assessment by women wikimedians during WWWW 2018, it has been realized that:

  • There is a need to discuss the issues and probable solutions to the hindrances women face .
  • There is a lot of potential to do outreach in India but it is hampered by lack of proper guidance or resource material to do outreach.
  • Though many women members have desire to undertake offline outreach they seldom receive support and guidance.
  • There is a need to further build the capacity of interested community members to conduct effective outreach sessions.
  • Not everyone gets the chance to meet and know the global women wikimedians and to exchange knowledge, such events would give the participants an exposure to the global movement and the practices followed by other communities.
  • There is a limited knowledge about the assistance being offered in terms of funding, community support, trainings which will enable the existing leaders to design better projects and expand the movement.

Thus women wikimedians are joining hands along with the CIS A2K Team to launch our first Women Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme with an aim to support and groom leadership skills in the community members who are interested to conduct Wikipedia outreach sessions in their own cities/languages and to spread the word about the Indic Wikipedias. The plan to turn this into an annual event depends on the outcome of the event.

Frequently Asked Questions edit

Q. How the idea of women TTT came about?

Wiki Women for Women wellbeing was the first only Women lead pan Indian event. A few wikimedians met at Ranchi during Wiki Advanced training(LINK IT) and conceptualized the idea of doing one women-centric event together. The event went well, but there were a lot of experiences and learnings which were new and we felt the need to have a women-centric event to understand the struggles women editors face, the hindrances and to plan the future programs or initiatives.

Q. Why only women?

Usually all the events have participants from different regions, irrespective of their gender. The sessions are planned on the grounds of overall issues addressed and measures adopted. The women have been working and supporting the initiatives of their respective groups and never realized the importance of emerging as leaders and taking the movement forward. To make women believe in themselves and explore their potential, we wish more women to come out of the comfort zones and push themselves to play a more important role in the expansion of the movement.

Q. Why only women lead sessions?

We have been organizing or attending different programs and pieces of training, but they haven’t proved beneficial to enhance the role of women in the movement majorly. The initiative we took last year, has boosted our confidence and has made the fellow women wikimedians propose new ideas and explore new horizons. We don’t mind men leading the sessions, but we derive inspiration and motivation more from people we can relate to, so here the global women leaders are believed to be the best choice for leading sessions.

Along with the global leaders, the women wikimedians from India will be joining them for the session plan on the basis of their expertise and interest.

Q. Who are organizing the program?

Sumita Roy, आर्या जोशी and Manavpreet Kaur. The TTT is powered by CIS-A2K.

Q. What I will gain for this program as a participant?

  • Understanding the role of women in the movement
  • Knowing the kind of activities fellow women wikimedians are involved in
  • Knowing the global leaders and getting their guidance on different subjects
  • Discussing issues and finding probable solutions
  • Deciding future activities

Q. What is pre-work?

On the basis of the interests shown by the participants and their expertise, every participant has been assigned one session. Pre-work involves reading more about the allocated session and preparing a talk on relevant work done, leading discussions or planning a hands-on activity (if required).

Q  Why it's needed?

To bridge the gender gap in terms of participation and content on wiki, sensitization, and training of existing members is required. This event is expected to help us be better leaders in the future.

Q. What is zero-day?

Zero-Day is important for introductions and interactions on a personal level. To break the ice and make everyone familiar with each other and their projects which help in deriving better outcome from the main sessions.

Q. How this date has been decided?

UNESCO Delhi Office is organizing Wiki4Women event on 8th March 2019 which is International Women’s Day. The idea to have women trainers for the event was appreciated and promoted by one and all. As the women wikimedians were planned to be invited to the event, the idea to have TTT at the same time was good in terms of budget planning, also 9th and 10th is the weekend.

Q.How our International trainer help?

The global wikimedians approached to lead the sessions have been doing amazing projects and experimenting in different ways. We have requested a few wikimedians from the global community to guide us with their experience and wisdom.

Q. If I have some issue during the program whom should I contact?

If the issues are about the event contact the organizers. In case of complaints contact the Support and Safety Team- Chinmayee Mishra,Shypoetess Parvathisri and Dhanlakshmi K.T.

Q. If there is a problem to understand training in English how do I clear my doubts?

We have members to assist you. The sessions will be in English and Hindi.

Q.What is the expectation from me after training?

To plan collaborative projects with other communities, better management, reporting and execution of the plan.

Q. How we select the participants for this event?

To be fair and neutral, [[User: Kritzolina]] was contacted and requested to help us with her experience and wisdom. She selected the participants for us.

Q. What is the difference between any other women-oriented program and WTTT?

A woman oriented program can be anything- an edit-a-thon, label-a-thon, awareness camp, project. TTT this time is women oriented to focus on women- their issues, challenges, and countermeasures for enhancement of their role in the expansion of the movement.
