Wikivoyage/Summit/Archive/2013-12

de edit

Sorry guys for being silent. Not everybody is keen to do all this Meta-stuff and this communication things. Happy birthday!!!! It's Wikivoyage's seventh birthday and our first year here under the WMF umbrella. THanks to every single contributor here. You all did a great job. THANKS AGAIN. Besides we got a present these days. The main page has goole Rank 7 YEAH! and the single mainpages of all languages have 6 - including en: YEAH! I've attended the WikiCon in Karlsruhe and Klaus (left), Roland (right) an me (center) had an interview. OMG! I am losing my main hair and had a party the day before. Sorry for not being prepared for an interview.... I got an inquiry for an interview. If everything ends fine with one of our two main public TV channels - the ZDF. -- DerFussi 11:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Social media edit

Growing slowly. I post all destinations of the month and travel news via Facebook and Google+

  • Facebook: 326 likes
  • Google+: 94 likes

Templates edit

We still miss some templates and the existing ones were badly documented. No chance for new users to find a way through the template jungle. So I am about to do work on these issues:

  • Implementing a /doc subpage to all existing templates
  • Creating an overview page.
  • Creating edditional subpages for templates belonging to a category e.g. everything about public holidays.
  • Importing a huge amount of templates from WP:en.
  • Creating a kind of portal site for told and new users. -- DerFussi 11:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles edit

We want to improve three or four articles as an example, how a good article should look like. In January we have our first WMF-birthday and want to create a press release. I recommend these to all language versions. Ask your local Wikimedia chapter to help with the press release. Newspapers wont listen to a Wikivoyage press release but they will listen to a Wikimedia press release. Do you need contact to your local Wikimedia chapter? You can ask me for help and creating contact. Just drop me a line. -- DerFussi 11:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI begin of press coverage exist already for french wikivoyage : Wikivoyage:Revue de presse--Adehertogh (talk) 11:06, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania edit

Is there anybody who will attend the Wikimania in London? Maybe having a booth in the chapters village? I am not keen to go (tired) but one or two or three guys from the WV association will be there. Maybe I can arrange some WV leaflets, stickers or whatever ....

Communication edit

Don't forget to think about the communication between the language versions. I assume, only a few guys read this here. I have access to the Global message delivery system and can drop a message on all Lounges. You start a new project? You need help? Don't hesitate to ask. Do you want to get the WV global messages on your talk page as well? Feel free to add your page here.... -- DerFussi 11:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata edit

Wikidata is very important. We should work on a solution to move our listings to Wikidata. We talked withz Lydia Pintscher about it in Karlsruhe. Many things are possible already. The access to different pages via ID will hopefully come soon. -- DerFussi 11:33, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

en edit

PR edit

  • The New York Times compares Wikivoyage and other online efforts to printed guides. Mentions several Wikivoyage drawbacks, but as a whole a great publicity for us.

Content edit

  • Discussion about factorizing airport information, with templates.
  • Consensus seems to reject the idea of a currency converter.
  • Enthusiasm for a Time-traveller guidebook, for instance "London 1890". It would be hosted out of Wikivoyage.
  • A script reported thousands of mistakes in the listings parameters. They are being corrected little by little.
  • Discussion about whether sensitive content should be purged further.

Re-use edit

  • The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation is preparing a book about Karachi&around. It will be distributed free of cost to both local and foreign tourists in the city by the PTDC itself. Given the fact that LP&others have left the area, it might be "the only complete, up-to-date, reliable and the most comprehensive guide ever written" about the world's 7th biggest city.
  • All-world listings can be added as a layer in the offline maps/navigation/GPS Android app OsmAnd. [1]
  • The listings are now available for download as CSV and XML (OpenStreetMap format), which makes them easy to re-use in apps/mashups/websites.

This last mouth the french Wikivoyage concentrate on the contents of the article. The usable information written on wikitravel during the last year is maybe already at 70% or more transfered on wikivoyage. We have also our second star article (Ath). I feel also a bit concern that the numbers of active user in falling since septembre (about 90-100 during summer to 58 today...). Any idea to motivate contributors?

I would like here to have more information form the main Wikivoyage on the new politics, new template or modul they use. I saw that the english version implemented link for phone on listings. I made a copy of that for the french Wikivoyage but I surely missed other implementations and I rated work on french voy than I read the debate on a dozen of expedition on english voy so please make an abstract of your work here. --Adehertogh (talk) 08:37, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think that previous summits will give you a rather comprehensive picture of the developments. Concerning the last month, I can't imagine anything except for the in-line Marker template that adds the POI marker (and, therefore, the marker on the map) without phone, address, and other contact information. It is designed for in-line use when you don't want to make a standard, full-size listing. Other discussions are about trolling, sock-puppets, ways of re-defining consensus... weird things that are, fortunately, irrelevant to other language versions.
One more thing that may be important for you is the link to WT in the bottom of imported pages (those pages that were imported during the migration). You can easily modify (e.g., de-link) or even remove it by playing with relevant MediaWiki parameters. English and Russian and perhaps other Wikivoyages have done it, although legal aspects are not entirely clear. You can also get rid of the WT attribution by deleting those edits that were done before August 2012 (again, it is not something that you will routinely do, but technically it is possible). In general, these links do not hurt, but of course, they do not improve your Google rating. What is the current situation on fr:? Does Google see you? --Alexander (talk) 19:43, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the informations. Google sees us and use to give a equal rank or bit better rank than wikitravel. Our main page has a rank of 6/10. Rank for pages are lower. --Adehertogh (talk) 23:28, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We are quite busy with the Russian cultural heritage and other internal things that are of little interest to the international community. Just two developments that are worth mentioning:

  • We kind of believe that everything should be organized using the listing template. Therefore, we asked Joachim to introduce a new type of listing (type=vicinity) that will be used for POIs around the city, as listed in the Get out/Go next section. This idea proved to be very useful. We can specify coordinates, show everything on the map, add phones, weblinks, etc. --Alexander (talk) 19:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We had the same idea in french. --unsigned
Interesting! Do you have an example page, to get a better idea of how it looks? Thanks! Nicolas1981 (talk) 12:32, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like a normal listing, either paragraph-like (with URL, phone number, etc.) or in-line. See examples here and here. --Alexander (talk) 21:29, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • We also believe that the integration with Wikidata is very important. Therefore, we started to add Wikidata item numbers for those listings that already have their Wikidata item. We do it using the wdid= parameter of the listing template. Presently, this parameter is idle, but it may have multiple applications in the future. Moreover, it adds a unique identifier to our listings, which is something that we never had before and never needed, but it becomes increasingly important if we want to make cross-links between listings in different language versions or between Wikivoyage and Wikipedia. --Alexander (talk) 19:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In french we have the parameter wikipédia for the link to the article on the encyclopaedia but no link to wikidata yet. --unsigned

I don't think that it will be created in time for this month's report, but the Chinese Wikivoyage has now been approved: bugzilla:59077 --Rschen7754 19:10, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
