Name for Namespace 4

Namespace 4 is the project's name, e.g. "Wikivoyage" on most wikis on wiWikivoyageorg. Since we must not pubish our new name until we have registered the domain, we use "Wikivoyage" as a placeholder for the name. This is why the new pre-de:-wiki has its meta-articles under the namespace "Wikivoyage". It will be changed as soon as the actual name is published.

I wonder whether it was a good idea to choose the name "General" for namespace 4 on this wiki. We also could call it "Wikivoyage". At the other hand, on general, there are no real meta-articles since the whole wiki is some kind of meta. So, maybe NS 4 should not be used at all here. Any Suggestions?

We should only use the main namespace and leave a NS 4 out. -- DerFussi 07:57, 11 October 2006 (CEST)

Shouldn't we use the Help: Namespace?

There is an extra NS called Help: that is not used on WT. Instead, helping articles are treated there as meta-articles. I wonder whether we shouldn't use the Help: NS for our help-pages. -- Hansm 12:30, 11 October 2006 (CEST)

Way out of the Secrets

All German meta articles that we had got from WT had been imported to a secret wiki called gral: in order to revise them. It has turned out that the process of revision goes very slow. At the other hand, some development of general concepts has been startet in the secret that better had been discussed in public. Well, most have been moved to generel, in the mean time. Nevertheless, ideas born in the secret produce mistrust. We must find some way out of the secrets, now. The easiest, i. e. opening the gral: to public, is not possible since we have discussed there the name of the project, too. So, we have to move everything that need not to be kept in secret out of the gral.

I think time has come to realy finish the revision of meta articles. I have sorted all meta articels in one of the 3 groups: 1. Clean, can be published. 2. Needs to be revised. 3. Delete.

I want to propose to transfere the meta articles of group 1 and 2 onto pre-de: and continue the revision there. All articles of group 2 are marked as Database errors doutdated, so there won't be the danger that somebody drops in and misunderstands some of this articles as our final plicies.

The advantage of finishing the reviewing in public is to avoid a situation of mistrust.

-- Hansm 18:03, 11 October 2006 (CEST)

In order to prevent search engine crawlers to collect half-finished meta-articles, I have blocked anonymous readers from pre-de:. Since there are no contradictions to my proposal above, I want to begin the transfer of mete-articles this weekend or at the beginning of next week. -- Hansm 14:49, 13 October 2006 (CEST)

Database errors during the weekend

There have been database errors during last weekend. I suppose, the reason was simply a limitation of the size of a database file. I never had to do with InnoDB tables, but as far as I have understood the problem, everything shold be fine after having risen the max. file size. Please let me know if there are still errors like "Error „1114: The table 'text' is full (localhost)“.". -- Hansm 12:29, 16 October 2006 (CEST)

Pub or Lounge

When looking for a new name for the de:Stammtisch, we have decided call it Lounge since this would be understood internationaly. Shouldn't we rename this pub here, too?

Webdesigner for portal needed

I created a separate page for the portal and moved the Pub talk to the discussion page. Hope that is ok. --Friedjoff 11:39, 10 December 2006 (CET)

(This is a (shortened) discussion about the new logo sweapt in from gral. Thus, it's in German. Please continue in English.)

-- Roland 18:13, 29. Sep 2006 (CEST)

When will we implement the Logo into our Wiki? --Der Reisende 12:23, 28 November 2006 (CET)
Well, I could do so imediately, but maybe we should add the phrase "Discover the World" or "Die Welt entdecken", respectively, first. -- Hansm 16:26, 28 November 2006 (CET)
Alright, I recently sent Unger the *.ttf file I used to create the phrase. --Der Reisende 17:35, 28 November 2006 (CET)

Assoc: set up

The association's wiki assoc: has been set up, but it's still terribly empty. I have copied the user accounts for all members from the gral database, but I fear the encrypted passwords don't work. I'm going to send new passwords to all members. -- Hansm 16:33, 28 November 2006 (CET)

New password received and checked, it is working well. --Der Reisende 17:39, 28 November 2006 (CET)
And by the way: it's working faster than Wikipedia now ;-) --Steffen M. 12:31, 1 December 2006 (CET)

Who are us?

There are two possible spellings of Wikivoyage(u)r, the French (with "u") and the English (without "u") one. I have used the English spelling when updating the meta-articles on de:, but I'm nor realy sure. Should we prefere English or French spelling or should we use both? -- Hansm 15:43, 1 December 2006 (CET)

As this name has its origin in the canadian/french fur trading bussiness of the 18th and 19th century we should use voyageur. In the english literature referring to this business it is used that way. --Der Reisende 10:39, 4 December 2006 (CET)
I still have no final idea about the spelling of Wikivoyage(u)r. One thing we should take into account is that French Wikitravellers call themselves "Wikivoyageurs" (with "u") occasionaly. So, it would be more distigt if we would write it without "u". -- Hansm 12:28, 19 December 2006 (CET)

Announcement: Off-Times this weekend

Due to maintenance works, there will be several (hopefully) short off-times of the server this weekend. I'll have to reboot from time to time and maybe close down the apache web server for some short periods. I'm sorry for the hazzle, but there are still some things that need to be done before the fork. -- Hansm 15:54, 1 December 2006 (CET)

Up again!

When announcing off times for the last weekend, I didn't mean that what realy has happened. The Most Stupid Wikivoyager of the Month Award is mine! I had locked me (and all others) out of the system by setting stupit IP filter rules. So we needed a manual reset by an operator of our hoster what only could be done during their working hours. Needless to say, I'm sorry. -- Hansm 09:01, 4 December 2006 (CET)

Google knows us

We are at position 8 for the search string "wikivoyage" at Google. Yahoo gives a link to our good old gral at position 6. (I have set a link to the new portal there.) -- Hansm 13:42, 10 December 2006 (CET)

AltWT moved to archive

AltWT has been moved to the archive. Its mission is completed. -- Hansm 18:22, 11 December 2006 (CET)

WikiVoyage is not Wikitravel...

...but the homepage http://www.wikivoyage.org/ is mixing things up, I though you might want to notice that. -- Rmx 01:25, 12 December 2006 (CET)

Thank you, Ricardo. This was an important hint. It still happens that we write "Wikitravel" instead of "Wikivoyage", simply because all of us are old Wikitravellers and new customs need their time. I have changed this painful typo. However, welcome to Wikivoyage. I'm happy to see that you are interested in our new project. I know, there is only very few in English on our site and I'm sorry for that. At the other hand, our personal resources are limited and we want to focus on the fork of the German language version first. But be patient, we all know how important English informations are for the project and we will provide them as soon as our time allows. -- Hansm 10:39, 12 December 2006 (CET)
