Wikimedians of Nomads User Group Logo


The Wikimedians of Nomads User Group is a User Group of the Wikimedia users. Its mission is to promote the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects for nomads.

A nomad is a member of a community without fixed habitation who regularly moves to and from the same areas. Such groups include hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads (owning livestock), tinkers and trader nomads.

One of its core missions is to aid and encourage people to collect, develop and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural and historic content in the public domain or under a license that allows everyone to freely use, distribute and modify said content without the payment of royalties.

Promote the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects for nomads

Roles of the User Group edit

  • To represent the Wikimedia Foundation to the nomad.
  • To promote Wikimedia projects and free content in general and to encourage the use of Wikimedia resources in education (primary, secondary and tertiary levels).
  • To recruit technically and non-technically minded people to participate to Wikimedia projects. This may involve some education on the use of Mediawiki software.
  • Organisation of conventions, conferences, meetings, workshops, contests, etc.
  • With a local group, research should be easier. The group works together to gather information on a range of topics not currently covered.

Activities edit

  • The main activity of the user group is to go to the nomads and small villages in their areas to present wikipedia and give them the opportunity to learn from wikimedia projects
  • Regular meetings / online meetings for discussions;
  • Wikipedians in Residence;
  • Workshops;
  • Editathons;
  • Contests;
  • Wiki groups/camps etc
