Wikimedians of Nepal/Wiki Gender Gap Program Nepal

Wiki Women Initiative is a program to address the gender gap in Wikimedia Movement in Nepal. The initiative now focus on the women's participation to develop such contents.

WikiWomen Edit-a-than

Wiki Women Edit-a-thon is an event conducted to increase women participation and women related articles in Wikipedia. We sit together and edit Wikipedia in the event. First Women Edit-a-Thon in Nepal was conducted in 2013 on International Women's Day 8 March 2013 focusing the increment of number of articles on Gender and Women issues.

On the auspicious occasion of International Girls in ICT Day,Wikimedia Nepal conducted wiki editathon for girls in Sumway International Business School on 25th April 2013, 25 girls were participated and did some wiki edit things.This is first program of International Girls in ICT in Nepal. Outreach Programs

WikiWomen Initiative in partnership with Media Advocacy Group successfully organized an interaction on "Gender in Wikipedia" in Kathmandu on 18th December, 2013.

Facilitating the program, Journalist Babita Basnet, Chairman of Media Advocacy Forum introduced the objectives of the program.

Speakers in the program presented account of contribution ratio which is 4:1. Various researches showed 20% of total contribution in Wikipedia comes from women. This ratio causes bias in writing articles. Participants put forth their curiosities on Wikipedia which were answered by the resource persons.[1]

The goals of the program were:

  • Make the participants familiar with Wikipedia.
  • Give a brief account of gender-gap in digital content especially in Wikipedia.
  • Catalyze the participants to contribute in Wikipedia.
  • Develop network of Wiki-Women and establish relations with Women activists.

Approximately 45 participants with majority number of journalists writing on gender and women participated in the program enthusiastically.

Resource Persons:

Srijana Timsina, Prakash Neupane and Ganesh Paudel presented about Wikipedia, Wiki Movement and Women initiatives. Resource persons, Journalist and WMNE Advisor Kedar Sharma and Nepali Wikipedia admin Krish Dulal clarified many queries of the participants.

Addressing the program Sulochana Manandhar, Council Member of Nepal Academy and WMNE Advisor appreciated the activities of WikiWomen for Wiki-awareness and bridging gap.

Limitations

Because of time constraints technical session to teach how to edit Wikipedia could not conducted. The participants have requested for technical session.
