Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Wikimedia Commons

edit

On 7 September, Wikimedia Commons celebrated its 20th anniversary, and together with our partners and the community, we wanted to give the media bank some great gifts.

Wish list

edit

In the months leading up to the anniversary, Wikimedians indicated on this wish list which visual material they would like to see on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Nederland went to work on it and we are happy that we were able to get some presents. For instance, het Huis van het boek gave us two photos by graphic designer Susanne Heynemann, a photo by Bep Voskuijl of the Anne Frank Stichting, and a photo by Clariet Kok van Alphen from the Leiden University Library.

Media donations

edit

Partners of Wikimedia Netherlands have given nice gifts to Wikimedia Commons:

  • Maastricht University Library has donated 13 digitised books from their Special Collections (1654 scans!). This collection includes original, unusual and rare books on psychology-related topics.
  • Biblioteca Nacional Aruba donated the Meiners photo collection (397 photos) with colourful photos depicting life in Aruba in the 1950s to 1980s.
  • Het Wereldmuseum has donated a festive part of their collection. The material includes Queen's Day celebrations in Indonesia, Suriname and the NL Caribbean and other celebrations from around the world.
  • The KB, national library, is planning further special media donations in the anniversary year of Wikimedia Commons; for example, the next volumes (5 and onwards) of the Flora Batava will be published on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. In addition, the historical one-page prints (including placards, ordinances, occasional poems, geographical maps, maps, engravings, portraits) will continue to be supplemented by thousands of new documents.
  • Naturalis is also working on a donation of material from their collection in the month of September: digitised type specimens (type specimens).

All media donations can be found in this special category on Wikimedia Commons.

Gendergap & LGBT+

edit

After a summer break, the Gendergap & LGBT+ meetings were back in September with an inspiring meeting on Bisexuality in the Netherlands. The Wiki Loves Fashion writing week started at the end of September, with nine new articles added in just one week. This writing week ended with a meeting at the National Archives in collaboration with Wiki Goes Caribbean participants. On 1 October, the first Dutch edition of #Shesaid started.
