Milestone for portraits on Wikipedia

edit

22 June 2020 - Through the special website www.wikiportret.nl more than 5000 photos have been uploaded, mostly portrait photos of famous people with an article on Wikipedia. These photos have all been released by photographers under a free license so that they can be used free of charge on Wikipedia and elsewhere. Ellywa, the driving force behind Wikiportret, wrote the blogpost '5000 portrait photo’s of famous Dutch and Flemish people on Wikimedia Commons', published on the Wikimedia Nederland website.

Highlights of the Royal Library collection on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata

edit

Front page of 'Hot printing', a work by Hendrik Werkman

Taking as an example all the activities of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and inspired by the presentation that project leader Andrew Lih gave on Wikidatacon 2019, the Royal Library (KB) has now also started a project around their masterpieces. In this project, the KB focuses on improving the access to and (re)usability of the data, images and texts of their masterpieces by placing them on Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons (including structured data) and on the English and Dutch Wikipedias. The 72 masterpieces of the KB show a great diversity of works: from medieval manuscripts, picture books, atlases, weapons books to alba amicorum and periodicals. On the website of the KB (kb.nl) it is now also possible to download the individual images via a direct link to Wikimedia Commons, in addition to the digital books in which the entire masterpiece can be viewed. Do you have questions about the possibilities of (re)using data, images or texts from the Koninklijke Bibliotheek? Daniëlle Jansen is contact person for this project.

Wiki goes Caribbean online meeting Flora and Fauna

edit

On Saturday, June 20, about 15 participants of the Wiki goesCaribbean project met again online, via Zoom. The theme of this edit-a-thon, organized in collaboration with the Nationaal Archief and Dutch Caribbean Book Club, was 'Flora and fauna'. Part of the group received a general introduction to Wikipedia, guided by experienced Wikipedians. The other participants exchanged tips and information on various topics: including open data on the Antilles, how to include Dutch and Papiamento names of animal species in a Wikipedia list, how to search for images on Wikimedia Commons, and the international photo competition Wiki LovesEarth.

Reading, cleaning, reconstructing (linking data to Wikidata) and enriching data were discussed. During the presentation, participants each worked with their own database and followed the steps Daniëlle discussed. The presentation of this workshop is available on Wikimedia Commons.

edit

Curious about the activities developed by Wikimedia Netherlands in 2019? Take a look at the Wikimedia Nederland annual report 2019 on the association wiki (in Dutch). In addition to an overview of the multitude of themes and topics, this annual report also provides a good picture of the great diversity of editors who have contributed to the Wikimedia projects over the past year. Thanks to the support of donors, members, collaborative partners and volunteers, we are looking back on a beautiful Wiki year.
