Reach / Free Knowledge Awareness
editJugend hackt Österreich 2016
edit"Jugend Hackt" (coding for youngsters) is an initiative of the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF), in which teenagers (from age 12 to 18) come together for a weekend to build creative projects collaboratively with open data – learning how to access and work with open data, as well as advancing their programming skills and making friends along the way. The concept was invented in Germany and this year it was hosted in Austria for the first time. As WMAT is collaborating closely with the Austrian OK chapter, we also supported this event with staff and volunteer time. We presented and introduced Wikidata and the Austrian Open Data Portal and served as mentors for the youngsters and their projects over the weekend.
The results of the weekend are six impressive projects and prototypes and 35 young participants who impressively improved their data literacy and coding skills. Unfortunately, most participants were at the bottom of the age scale and therefore a bit too young for being recruited for the Wikimedia Hackathon next year.
Individuals involved: 95 (active editors: 1, WMAT staff: 1). - WMAT support: staff time, swag. Tavel costs and accomodation were covered by external funding of the event.
EU XXL Jour fixe on EU advocacy and copyright
editThe EU copyright reform is in full swing - lobbyists and policy makers of all shades have been exchanging arguments concerning freedom of panorama, ancillary copyright etc. But beyond representatives, syndicates, and lobby groups - what do indivdual copyright holders and potential reusers of their work think and how will the reform influence their respective work?
WMAT and EU XXL - a platform for European film makers, which whom we got in touch via our Austrian Film photography project in May - hosted an event for exactly those, often underrepresented groups, bringing together Austrian artists and Wikimedians for an evening of discourse and exchange. The result was the insight that the two groups have more in common than one would initially think and that there is mutual interest to continue the cooperation in the context of EU advocacy. And as unlikely alliances are often the most powerful ones in terms of public and professional attention, we are positive that there is potential for joint action in future.
A panel consisting of legal experts, artists, and EU advocats, i.e. our man in Brussels Dimitar, kick-started the discussion, which was moderated by a well-known net political Austrian journalist. All costs of the event (venue, catering, fees), including travel costs for panelists, was sponsored by EU XXL.
Individuals involved: 15 (active editors: 4, WMAT staff: 2). - WMAT support: coordination.

Wikimedia partnerships workshop Berlin
editAs many other affiliates, WMAT constantly strives to initiate valuable, diverse partnerships from within and outside of the movement. When Wikimedia Deutschland invited movement affiliates to a workshop in Berlin in order to exchange experiences from different organisations and approaches on partnerships of different kinds, WMAT decided to send a staff member to the workshop. Other goals of the workshop were to refine and enhance the existing partnerships working group, and to create of resources and tools for the movement. Last but not least, we laid the groundwork for the WMCON program part that will deal with partnerships and that might be interlinked with Wikimedia movement strategy conversations. WMAT's ED will serve as a link in this regard to other groups also currently working on the Wikimedia strategy such as the ED group and the GLAM coordinators.
The workshop was helpful for WMAT in various regards: The expertise of other affiliates such as WMDE concerning collective impact provided valuable input for our existing partnerships around open data in Austria and similar activities concerning cultural heritage in future. We could also introduce our approach to tracking, documenting, and valuing in-kind donations and were happy to see that other affiliates consider it useful and would be willing to refine it together in future.
Individuals involved: 12 (WMAT staff: 1). - WMAT support: Travel costs. WMDE support: accomodation, catering, venue, coordination.
