WMAT General Assembly edit

Basics
  • in a nutshell: WMAT's general assembly with elections of the board, the auditors and the good governance committee. WMAT also passed substantial changes to the bylaws so they match our reality in terms of roles and responsibilities and also include inclusive, gender-neutral language in the bylaws and a link to our friendly space policy, so these two documents conflict as little as possible.

Wikimedia ED Meeting in Vienna edit

Basics
  • in a nutshell: the affiliate EDs and WMF staff met in Vienna in order to prepare input for phase 2 of the strategy process. This was necessary as most EDs will not attend Wikimania in Cape Town this year, so a meeting in the context of an international event was not an option this time. Most EDs will participate in the various working groups and during the meeting common challenges and process questions were discussed. WMAT served as a host and coordinator.

Press conference with Katherine Maher edit

Basics
  • in a nutshell: on 1 July, Austria took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It means that Austria will lead the trilogue negotiations of the EU copyright reform. Thus the Austrian Government and the Parliament will negotiate the whole package, including “upload filters” (Art. 13), the press publishers right (Art. 11), and the exceptions that Wikimedia is advocating for. WMAT used the fortunate timing of Katherine Maher's visit in order to hold a press event and to raise awareness for the issue, together with partners from the Austrian netpolitical scene.

Ruby Habits meetings edit

Basics
  • in a nutshell: As a result of our networking activities with like-minded tech communities around the Wikimedia Hackathon, we started a cooperation with the Viennese coder group Ruby Habits, who now regularly use our office for their community meetings. As a result they now include Wikimedia projects in their activities and some community members became part of our Wikidata Austria group and activities.

Netpolitical Evenings edit

Basics
  • in a nutshell: We co-hosted 6 netpolitical evenings as of June 2018, with an average of 50 participants, covering topics from EU advocacy to state of the art research around e-privacy. The event also has a loyal remote audience via live stream and broadcasting of various free radio stations across Austria. In addition, it became a valuable platform to find partners, participants, or multipliers for WMAT activities. The initiative is mainly volunteer run and cost neutral, the venue is an in-kind donation by the local hackspace metalab.
