Overall assessment

Education Programme

The activities of the Education Programme were carried out in 3 schools out of which 2 are new in which the education program has started in this year, the Wiki Club at the American Corner in Skopje which lasted for 3 months and two lecture seminars one in Bitola and another in Livadišta summer camp. Fourteen lectures and workshops were given to the participants in all the activities carried out in the three schools and three other institutions included. The pupils at the Josip Broz - Tito Grammar School, Krume Kepeski Primary School and Goce Delčev Primary School were given assignments to edit articles on physical topics and all of the articles created or improved as part of the programme have come from this collaboration. Outcome is below our project level due technical reasons such as lack of computers and internet in classrooms of one schoo as well as the the outcome was targeted a bit unrealistically high. Nevertheless the outcome from this year shows significant growth in the new schools and institutions included, number of activities organized and the number of participants with content created comparing to the previous years (for 66,92% or nearly 2/3 in all project metrics). The number is even higher due to the fact that some of the students who have participated in the second school semester in the first months of 2018 are not yet listed on the project pages.

Wikipedia lectures and training

Тhe concept of the project was changed from giving lectures to a large audience to organising interactive educational seminars for a smaller crowd. This year we have very successful realization of 11 lectures given in the entire year including the Wiki Club at the American Corner in Skopje which lasted for 3 months with 6 lectures and two lecture seminars one in Bitola and another in Livadišta summer camp in the first half of 2018, while in the second half of the year training and lectures about Wikipedia were organized and held in National and University Library "St. Clement of Ohrid" (twice), "Pedala" social center and with children at social risk at their house shelter.

Wikipedia 17

To mark the 17th anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia (Wikipedia 17), Shared Knowledge held a series of events in honour of this occasion. The second and important purpose of the events was to familiarise the public with the movement and its values, and invite them to participate. Thee main event included Wiki meeting with the most valuable contributors and members of the Wiki community who discussed all important aspects of the ongoing projects on Wikipedia of Shared Knowledge and the Wikimedia movement in general.

Wikiexpeditions

Following its strong and successful start in 2015, the project continued for the fourth consecutive year with five Wikiexpeditions organized in 2018 to the Pijanec, Azot, Drimkol, Kopačka and Raec regions of Macedonia. In its fourth year, the project in each conducted expedition engaged new members and volunteers who as previously involved in our other projects on Wikipedia have contributed by photographing and editing articles. Also, the project saw more detailed level of coverage and promotion on the social networks through a fan page created on Facebook which draws significant attention in the public. This year Wikiexpedition resulted with images uploaded ( used in articles) and new or improved articles.

Geoexpeditions

Geoexpeditions were organised for the third consecutive year with the goal of visiting mountainous areas and valleys aiming to cover, explore and photograph the various geographic landmarks in the relevant areas, such as peaks, ridges, topographic areas, passes, falls, forests, plateaus, rivers, brooks, streams, tributaries, waterfalls, lakes, as well as specific native (and endemic) flora and fauna. By this activity we aimed to discover as much as possible unknown or less known geographical locations and features in Macedonia on remote places with difficult access. Considering that the main aim of the Geoexpeditions in 2018 were hydro-graphical features such as glacial lakes, caves and mountain peaks, we definitely achieved the aimed goal as we have completed the year with 10 caves and speleological features and 22 mountain peaks and 8 mountains as well as 10 rivers, 6 lakes, 1 swamps and 8 villages. The total outcome in numbers for this year is 33 newly created and 43 improved articles with 476 uploaded images (87,89% used in articles). Geoexpeditions this year were conducted with a close collaboration and support from mountaineering club "Transverzalec" with experienced hikers and sharing equipment while this year we have also engaged new members and volunteers such as geogrphy teacher, scholars (professors & researchers) which gives the opportunity to expand the cooperation of Wikipedia with different groups of science, dispute and society. Four main Geoexpeditions were conducted as well as dozen additional visits on the field research.

Agroexpeditions

Agroexpeditions is project by Shared Knowledge akin to the Wikiexpeditions, but dedicated to documenting and research of the agriculture of Macedonia as one of its most important branches of the economy and its close ties to the nation's past and present. This year we have conducted this project for the second consecutive year. Members of the Agroexpedition project visited specific regions of agricultural significance, in 2 main expeditions and several other visits throughout the period of sowing, plowing, ripening and harvesting of the crops. Through out the Agroexpeditions we have covered and documented very specific well known and rare crops in Macedonia such as peanuts, black eyed pea, olives, types of cereals. Also we have engaged new members and volunteers within the visit of first food corps in Macedonia. This year we have achieved the following result of 251 images uploaded (87,15% used in articles) and 17 newly created and 28 improved articles.

Veloexpeditions

This is the third consecutive year in which we realized in this project. Аpart from the several visits this year in the first weekend in September 2018, user Ehrlich91 along with three other cyclists headed to the remote area with villages south of Bitola, second most populous town in Macedonia. Area contained various villages that has no single photograph on Wikimedia Commons, and that was main purpose of the first organized group Veloexpedition to take images from small villages, old churches and nature beauties. During this veloexpedtition were visited and photographed eight different villages, along with many churches and other cultural and natural sights which resulted in 124 uploaded distinct photographs on Wikimedia Commons from the participants on the Veloexpedition.

Wiki Camp

Same as in the previous 2017 year, during the holiday weekend on the occasion of the Independence Day of Macedonia from 7th to 9th of September 2018 in the village of Dihovo on the foothills of Baba mountain near Bitola, the second Wiki-Camp was organized. The camp was attended by 20 young people from several towns in Macedonia who, through mutual acquaintance and socializing, had the opportunity to get to familiarized, instructed and be trained for editing articles on Wikipedia. Moreover all of the participants have been trained for creating a good quality articles by adding references, categorizing articles and formatting text in the articles. The second main focus of the training during the wikicamp was the uploading and licensing images on Commons Wikimedia. For the first time on this wikicamp has been conveyed presentation and workshop on Wikidata, whereby the participants have edited several subjects of articles. Apart from the editing activities the second main activity about which the participants have been trained was the manner of conducting expedition field research in the area of geography, nature, agriculture, cultural heritage, architecture and archeology through hikes on different places in the surroundings whereby over 130 photos have been taken and made available for free use. Within the editing activities during the Wikicamp in Dihovo, more than 50 new articles on Wikipedia have been created and more then a dozen were improved in Macedonian Wikipedia. Further in the month of September 1/4 of the participants of the Wiki Camp Dihovo 2018 participated in at least three other projects after the camp, which indicates the success of this camp

Editing competitions

After the successful results in filling content gaps in the previous years, four contests, including CEE Spring 2018, were organised during the course of the year. The topics of the contests covered 1000 articles that every Wikipedia should have, Time Periods, Islands and CEE Spring 2018. With the editing competitions, we are joining forces to create as many articles as possible within a certain longer time period and coming closer to the strategic goal set to reach 100.000 articles on Macedonian Wikipedia. A jury then decides the winners, who are awarded. This year we ended up with 432 newly created and 292 improved or 724 articles edited in total.

Editing days

The editing days were introduced with the goal of writing articles on a pre-selected underrepresented topic during a 24-hour period (CET) on the Macedonian Wikipedia. A total of sixteen editing days were assigned and organized during the course of the year, with some of them commemorating holidays and recent events and some of them being part of initiatives of other communities of Wikimedians. The topics that the participants in the editing days were editing on included "Coins for collector purposes", "Archaeological sites in the region of Sveti Nikola", "Ice Hockey Team Squads of the Winter Olympics 2018", "Pantomime", "Finals of the UEFA Cup & League Europa", "Finals of the UEFA Champions League", "Referees of the FIFA World Cup 2018", "FIFA World Cup 2018 Managers", "Churches of the Holy mother of God", "Archeological sites in Delčevo region", "Mountain passes in Macedonia", "Deserts in Eurasia", "Geological periods", "Egyptian Pyramids", "Punctuation marks" and "Lines of the public transport in Skopje" . This year we ended up with 265 newly created and 12 improved with 12 newly created templates or 289 articles edited in total.

Editing weekends

With our editing weekends, we encouraged Wikipedians to devote more of their free time in writing on relevant topics for the duration of a given weekend. Considering that this year we organized 10 editing weekends where 156 articles were created or improved. We chose the topics to be current and linked with our other projects and ongoing events thus for the editing weekends in this year we dedicated the topics: "Macedonian Cuisine", "Art paintings", "Volleyball", "Faberge eggs", "Heraldry", "Rivers in Macedonia", "Eurovision song contest", "Russia", "Croatia", "Korea", "Winter Olympic Sports", "Medalists of the Winter Olympic Games", "Mountains" "Botany", "Papal Bulls", "First World War", "Nordic mythology", "Museums", "Poland" and "Bodies of Water". This year we ended up with 290 newly created and 26 improved with 7 newly created templates or 323 articles edited in total.

Edit-a-thons

The edit-a-thons aim to increase community spirit in working towards a common goal on a certain topic that has been agreed as being of importance. Quality is improved both by covering missing topics and by extending existing articles. This year we increased the number of planned edit-a-thons hence we held 6 edit-a-thons on the topics: "Velocity", "Architecture", "Biology", "Business administration and accounting", "Psychology" and "Poland". Moreover we have actively contributed in organizing and providing lectures and instruction as well technical and logistical support on two more edit-a-thons: "WikiGap" as the part of the global Swedish initiative for narrowing the gender gap on Wikipedia and edit-a-thon dedicated to cerebral palsy. The outcome and results proved to be sucessful as we have engaged nearly 100 people with almost 90 newly registered users who have contributed with more than 200 articles.

Photohunts

The aim of this project encourage individuals with interest in topics to take initiative in formulating their own expedition plans, thus widening coverage of content, widening the community and promoting innovation within it. Also, we see the Photohunts as a chance to find and recruit new members and volunteers who will participates on the Expeditions and all other Wikimedia projects. This year we approved and granted 8 photohunts, 4 were conducted by one long-term very experienced contributor and one by newly registered volunteer who have attended and participated in the Wiki Camp, while the other 4 photohunts were conducted by newly registered users with аaccompany of friends who haven't registered due to the unfamiliarity for more detailed work in Wikipedia. This year for the first time we have a photohunt which was conducted on a cultural event "D festival" where photographs of many bands and performers were taken, also we have a photohunt named "Aerial views of Macedonia" with images taken by drone. The participants have also been involved from our projects such as WikiCamp, Wikisketch lessons. The total outcome of the photohunts in 2018 resulted with 603 pictures uploaded (77,94% used in articles).

Wiki City

With this activity we aim to provide a chance for a groups to visit a city in Macedonia and take photographs of its landscape, main streets, squares, city center, important buildings, institutions such as municipal buildings, schools, churches, museums, courts, neighborhoods, notable landmarks etc. that are not covered with pictures on the Commons Wikimedia neither on our expeditions. This year the project was realized in 2 organized tours which included 5 cities and towns in the eastern part of Macedonia organized by the bicycle crew "Milton Manaki" which regularly make tours visiting cultural and natural sites attended by cyclists who are also amateur and semi-professional photographers sharing a lot of decent quality images on the social media.

Wikisketch Lessons

Wikiskatch lessons have started in September 2018 as a new kind of activity intended to grow up the knowledge of Wikipedia by providing quick and fast training for working on Wikipedia by creating and editing articles, uploading images, doing a research on highly skilled individuals who are not yet contributing users on Wikipedia. The participants who have been instructed for editing and working on Wikipedia are carefully chosen primarily from the acquaintances known to have a higher degree of knowledge on a certain topic in business, sciences and professions such as economy, marketing, informational technology, banking, journalist, printing, transport etc. which lack or are scarcely covered with articles on Macedonian Wikipedia. The instructions are given directly and individually with a person in a time span between 30 minutes and hour where the participants are given a sketch of a Wikipedia articles which they follow as a pattern in creating and editing new articles by their own choice with the support of skilled editors who show them editing with the three main tool editors: coded, visual and the translation tool with mandatory embedding image, hyperlink and references.

Wiki Industry

The principal goal of Wiki Industry project is to make visits to industrial capacities and document the manufacture and production process in different industries as well as the final products, equipment, machinery. Additionally, the aim of this project is also people involved and employed in the industries to be familiarized with Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in informational and educational, non-commercial and non-marketing purposes. The project was successfully realized in 3 tours of visits of factories and industrial plants of the textile, wood, metal and iron industry where not just the industrial companies, equipment and plants but also the production process was documented through 116 uploaded images and 35 newly created and improved articles.

Wiki Beer

The activities of the Wikibeer project are set to be oriented towards documenting the country's history and culture in producing beer by partnering with local breweries and pubs. The project members previously experienced from the Wikiwine and Wikirakija projects made two visits to the beer festival with the longest traditions and two breweries and documented the production process as well as the different types of beer produced. This year we have realized 4 tours of visits of beer festival i.e. the oldest one in Prilep and craft-beer festival, pubs and breweries and industrial plants were conducted where we have contributed with 100 images uploaded and 24 articles created and improved about beer in general, Macedonian brands of beer and breweries and beer related topics.

Wiki Loves Food 2018

The photographic contest "Wiki Loves Food" is organized for the second consecutive year. Same as in the previous year on the 1st of November, we opened Wiki loves photographic contest, that we decided to focus again on the food, but this time with a broader scope with international cuisines from all around the world along with the traditional Macedonian and regional dishes and cuisines. Also, this year we have introduced two categories for the contestants one for images with professional quality and another one for images with amateur quality. The outcome of the participants and the number of the uploaded images was 687 uploaded images by 35 participants and although lesser than the previous year it reached the goal in prospect of participants involved and the content created.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions are public events where we present content of Wikimedia projects comprised of images with QR-codes links to Wikipedia articles to show to the broader public and thus inform them about our work and having a chance to attract new volunteers or establish contacts for possible future cooperations. This year we have managed to organize 2 exhibitions. The first one dedicated to the Wikiеxpeditions which was opened in order to present and mark the successful work of the project. This exhibition consisted 31 images taken during the Wikiexpeditions held in Macedonia and 3 posters with statistics and numbers of the content and all work done on Wikipedia. The second exhibition was part of the Macedonia-Poland photographic collaboration and was named Poland through photographs and organized on the same pattern as the exhibition with Brazil in the previous year. The project was included in the annual plan All of the images have been printed with QR-codes of links of the articles on Macedonian Wikipedia, which have previously created by the Shared Knowledge employees and members of the Macedonian Wikipedia community. The next day, on 8th of December, in the morning the exhibition was attended by 10 students of Polish language on the Faculty of philology in Skopje who have afterwards participated on the edit-a-thon which was organized on the topics related with Poland.
