The Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub is a Wikimedia hub under Wikimedia UG Nigeria that seeks to promote Wikimedia projects in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria by organizing Wikimedia events, campaigns to create awareness about Wikimedia projects, outreach programs to recruit and train new editors. Our core value is to increase access to knowledge by collecting, developing and disseminating educational, cultural and historic content in the public domain and other licenses where anyone can access, distribute and modify the contents for free.

Objectives edit

  1. To create awareness on Wikimedia projects and promote its use in Port Harcourt, the Capital city of Rivers State.
  2. To help Port Harcourt residents (most especially the youths) learn how to contribute to Wikimedia projects
  3. To organize in-person gatherings of Wikimedians in River State.
  4. To promote Wikimedia projects and free content in general.
  5. To encourage the use of Wikimedia resources in education (at cultural centers, associations and universities)
  6. Photography trips and upload-a-thons to teach users how to upload images and videos to Commons and how to use them;

History edit

The idea behind establishing a Wikimedia Hub in Port Harcourt, the capital city of River State, was born in 2021 after a successful Wikipedia Training and Edit-a-thon organized by User: Omorodion1 and User: Ugwulebo at the University of Port Harcourt. The Hub was then established in November, 2021 by both User: Omorodion1 and User: Ugwulebo. Since then, the both editors have made efforts to recruit and mentor interested volunteers from different parts of the city. The team has also trained undergraduate and postgraduate students at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Librarians, Medical students and Health practitioners in Port Harcourt amongst others. So far, over 100 volunteers have been recruited, trained and mentored in the City.

  • Organize Edit-a-thons for Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons etc in River State.
  • Promote editing of Rivers-related content on Wikimedia projects.
  • Trainings on how to edit Wikimedia projects.
  • Wikipedia Education Programs.
  • GLAMs.
  • Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors.
  • Wikimedia in Residence (WIR).
