Niger-Journalism Translate-a-thon on Yorùbá Wikipedia – May 2025

edit

In May 2025, the University of Ibadan Fan Club organized the Niger-Journalism Translate-a-thon, a focused effort to enrich the Yorùbá Wikipedia with articles on Nigerian journalism and media figures. The event brought together students and language enthusiasts to translate well sourced articles from English Wikipedia into Yorùbá wikipedia, with the goal of bridging content gaps, increasing local content and making knowledge more accessible on Yorùbá wikipedia.

Participants were introduced to Wikipedia’s Content Translation Tool and guided through the process of translating articles while upholding the platform’s standards for neutrality and sourcing. Over 30+ of articles were translated during the course of the translate-a-thons, covering notable Nigerian journalists, media houses, and press history.

More than 30 editors took part, collaborating in a vibrant, supportive environment that encouraged learning and contribution. The event also provided mentorship opportunities for new contributors and sparked conversations around the role of indigenous languages in preserving knowledge.

The translate-a-thon was a successful step towards trengthening the presence of Yorùbá content online. The fan club remains committed to growing this momentum through future Wikimedia campaigns.
