2021-02-04: Wikipedia, fake news and fact checking
editDYI (Debate Your Issue) is an Erasmus + project, that aims to help young people between 18 and 25 years to better understand the current European affairs, not to be afraid to express themselves on socio-political issues or to stand for their own opinions. In addition to the debate training, the project participants will go through various workshops, such as writing articles, creating podcasts or understanding visual communication and culture.
Participants of the project have to gradually prepare themselves for a debates on specific topics, meaning as well to do initial research for the topic on the selected topic. One of their first source is often Wikipedia.
We have prepared a Saturday all-day online workshop on Wikipedia for the participants; not only about its editing, but also a bit about the importance of fact checking and fake news. It took place on 23.1. 2021.
During the workshop, participants also expanded and improved controversial articles on the Czech Wikipedia, such as antifeminism, homosexuality, anti-globalisation and the anti-system party. You can see how they approached the difficult task here.
2021-02-19: Stories of Our Neighbours at Wikipedia?
editAs part of our ongoing partnership with Post Bellum, we spent today with the regional coordinators of the Stories of Our Neighbours programme, who learned how to create and edit passwords on Wikipedia and look for ways to support students in the project in this activity in the future.
Školení proběhlo jak jinak, než online v rozhraní ZOOM a v hlavním prostoru Wikipedie.
As it is lately usual for us, the training took place online at the ZOOM platform and in the main space of Wikipedia.
Stories of Our Neighbours is an educational project of Post Bellum’s for pupils ranging from the ages of 13-15 years old. Under the supervision of their teachers and with the support of coordinator, they are to interview a witness, record their life story, digitise photographs, scour archives, and ultimately create a radio, television, or written news report.
There will also be a new option to turn the story into a new article on Wikipedia after evaluating the encyclopaedic significance of the witness or some related event or period phenomenon to that person.
You will be able to follow future contributions though the Dashboard of that particular project.
2021-02-08: High school students write articles for WikiProject Czechoslovakia 1948–1989
editStudents from Gymnázium prof. Jana Patočky, Prague, took part in writing Wikipedia within Samet na školách (Velvet in Schools) project. On 12 January 2021, they wrote articles on topics from recent Czech(oslovak) history at a one-day workshop. Active learning is the best way to gain knowledge and we believe that writing Wikipedia is an educational method with great potential. During several intensive hours 12 students co-created 5 new articles under the guidance of our trainers. The articles were created within the competition of Czechoslovakia 1948–1989 WikiProject, one of the students won an award for her article about Asanace, theater play from Václav Havel. Congratulations!
2021-02-12: Prague librarians learned how to improve Wikipedia
editA short training course for Prague Librarians was held on February 5, 2021. Librarians learned how to add references into Wikipedia articles (not only for #1Lib1Reb campaign) and how to find articles with "citation needed" tags. Although the training took place on Friday afternoon, participants asked so many questions that we lasted more than an hour beyond the original schedule and looked into other topics, such as photographs, maps and Wikidata.
