How I attended Wikimania 2022

I attended Wikimania 2022 virtually via Pheedloop, Zoom & YouTube also in-person in Kampala at Capital Kitchen where different Wikimedians from all parts of Uganda came and we celebrated together. It was an amazing experience all through during both the in-person and virtual Wikimania Festival.

Takeaways from 3 Wikimania sessions I attended and their description key takeaways per session.

1) Understanding different scopes of WIKI especially Wiki Loves Monuments and federated campaigns

I was able to get to know some of the challenges faced by the different local community groups in organizing such competitions locally. The ability to sensitize local communities take the initiative to take photographs of their different cultural heritage sites, not waiting for foreigners to do so on their behalf, and also the fact that these competitions are not all about winning but rather being able to give out free knowledge about there communities.

2) Session on Digital Security Basics

This session was outstanding and learning the fact that in this digital era all our private information can be accessed by one simple link sent to you by someone with the intent of stealing your information. Understanding Password strength was a highlight and how to keep them out of reach of Hackers.

3) Wikimedian of the Year 2022

There is no event without a big star, the Wikimanian of the Year was everything we wanted to hear, learn about them and celebrate. These people who work tirelessly and restlessly to see that the world is provided with free knowledge. The expressions when they feel celebrated are really key and the fact that the foundation really appreciates their work is so inspiring, I feel so proud of all those who contribute to free knowledge.

What I spent the scholarship funds on

I spent my scholarship funds on data & transport and as well got myself a brand new laptop charger.

How I connected with other people during Wikimania 2022? How I celebrated at Wikimania 2022

We connected virtually that I personally got to know a number of experienced Wikimedians, met new ones physically in Uganda and we exchanged a lot of ideas towards contributing to free knowledge on Wikipedia and other wiki projects. I celebrated online and physically and I can affirm that Wikimania 2022 felt so different.

Lastly, I enjoyed every bit of the Global Dance off. It was the first of the kind I attended. Thank you Wikimedia Foundation for the scholarship and my Uganda UserGroup for leading us and deeping us in the great mandate of the great vision of the Wikimedia Foundation.
